Hope Street (2020)
Enjoy it very much
Light and cozy watching. I've not had a desire to binge watch, but that's not a bad thing; it's a feel good, character, relationship, and community focused series filmed in Ireland. Far from a typical American-style series (a good thing in my books); no resorting to loud car chases, violence, sex, guns, and killing.
The characters are interesting and well developed, the actors are great, and production is terrific. The traditional drums in the soundtrack are a lovely addition, and the visuals are a delight.
Wholesome and gentle entertainment - enjoyable enough to be watching season 3, and hoping for a fourth season.
Last Light (2022)
Spectacularly bad
We found ourselves laughing at how ridiculous everything in it was. The first episode made it look like it might be worth watching, however, it got worse with every episode. We were actually in stitches at the ending! The actors may have been okay playing their shallow, one-dimensional characters, but the dialogue, scenarios, and a complete lack of a fleshed out story were killers. What thread of a weak story there was, was so poorly thought out, and the "science" and portrayal of research were laughable. Haven't watched something this terrible in years (though to be fair we *did* watch the whole thing, hoping that it would improve)
The Last of Us: Long, Long Time (2023)
One of the most beautiful television episodes EVER
Completely unexpected focus for this episode; the portrayal of such a loving relationship between two humans navigating together the new world was just outstanding. I actually cried (I'm not a cryer). The story, the actors, the production design and camera work brought so much feeling this episode. The script was "believable" and bittersweet, and the details in the sets were sublime - utterly delightful and nuanced. A love story at its best; talk about a huge hit of oxytocin and dopamine! I see from some of the reviews that some viewers wer outraged and upset, and I'm really puzzled as to why, aside from the obvious bigotry and will to impose religious beliefs on what they watch.
Virgin River (2019)
Super wholesome
Cheesy, wholesome, and light viewing. Love the dialogue modelling healthy communication between the adult characters. The streaming services need more series like this one; such a lovely break from guns, violence, graphic sex scenes, and machismo.
Mulan (2020)
Enjoyable!
Have not seen the cartoon, so we enjoyed it for what it was!
Luchshe, chem lyudi (2018)
Entertaining enough
I watched the whole series, so it was adequately entertaining. I'd have enjoyed it more if it didn't sound like 2 or 3 voice actors played multiple roles and just slightly changed their voice for each one. It may be reflective of Russian society that many of the lines are incredibly sexist.
