Khuda Kay Liye (2007)
A Must Watch...
This is one of the best..or in fact the best movies to come out of Pakistan in a long long time. Considering the perceived conservative situation prevailing in that country ,this is indeed a brave and laudable effort. The story surrounds the two brothers from Lahore and how their lives are affected by the after math of 9/11 crises. It also shows the travails of the England educated Pakistani girl Mary..who becomes an innocent victim of the skewed up logic or her hypo critic father. The two brothers are essentially music lovers, while one of them goes to US for furthering his musical education, the other one gets caught up in the teachings of fundamentalists Muslims and gives up his music. The girl Mary on the other hand is tricked into marrying in Pakistan when her father discovers that she has fallen in love with an English man. During the same time 9/11 happens and these educated persons fall prey to the adverse conditions surrounding them. The story of the film is remarkable as it clearly shows the aftermath of 9/11 crises on young educated Muslims. The movie picks up slowly with amateurish acting being done by some of the actors. But the story and smart screen play more than make up for it. In fact by second half one is riveted to his seat as the story takes it affect on you. There are quite a few great moments in the film but the one in which Mary tries to runaway from her captors in Afghanistan is especially heart rendering. Among the actors the lead actor Shaan and the actress playing Mary do a good job, but the final master stroke comes from the great Naseerudin Shah ,towards the end of the movie. Special mention must be made of the excellent back ground music of the film. It helps to convey the mood the film and stays with you even after the movie is finished. This is essentially a great film as it has its heart in the right place. It handles the issue of Islamic fundamentalism and the Muslim society with a humane touch without ever once going over the top. It takes a very objective view of the prevailing Pakistani society and should act as an eye opener for the western world. Finally being an Indian, anything concerning Pakistan is always of some interest to us,may be good or bad. At least for me this was a great eye opener. I came to realize that many of us Indians have totally false image of the society in Pakistan. This film show what a great country Pakistan is and the people in both country share the same values of peace and love at heart. The film also shows the importance of creative freedom for a society and hats off to Shoiab Mansoor, the director of the film for coming up with such a masterpiece!!!.
Bacheha-Ye aseman (1997)
Incredibly Good!!
Innocence and purity are the words that come to your mind after you have watched this movie. I got this movie from my local DVD library(God knows how they had such a masterpiece) and just to bide my time stared watching this movie. But what started as an innocuous plot finally turned out to be one of best movies I have ever watched. The story evolves around the brother and sister Ali and Zara.A bolt of bad luck causes Ali to loose Zaara's shoes, therefore the kids come up with a plan to share the only pair of sneakers that they have. What follows is then a heart warming tale of brother and sister trying there best to cope up with the situations that crop up and in the mean time keeping there secret. The plot of the movie is quite simple but is full of beautiful moments. These moments become more beautiful because of the great acting by the lead pair of brother and sister. Both the children have done extremely good acting and this itself is a tribute to the director of this movie. This movie is like a new born child, as you go along the movie you start sharing there emotions, feeling bad for there misfortune and hoping internally that everything turns out fine with them. The movie is full of positive energy and watching this movie leaves u with a hopeful and enthusiastic state of mind and heart. One other good aspect of this movie is the way in which it showcases Iran's culture. It shows quite boldly that Iran and other Arab countries are not just about Mullahs and hardliners and the people there are no different from the rest of the world. They also essentially share the same spirit of humanity. Overall a great movie and must watch for any avid cinema follower.
Mother India (1957)
Movie par excellence
This is perhaps one of the best if not the best Indian Movie ever made. A strong story line depicting the values and tribulations of rural India, this movie is backed up by some very powerful performances. All from Nargis,Suniel Dutt,Rajendra Kumar to Kanahiya lal are superb. The story revolves around Nargis and shows the trials and tribulations of her life. There are quite a few memorable sequences in the film. Starting from the scene when Nargis's one child has died due to malnutrition and the other two live ones are extremely hungry. In the moment of extreme despair when she decides to go to the village Baniya, her facial expression showing a mixture of pure contempt and extreme dejection are superb. A word must be said about the director of the movie,Mehboob Khan, right through out the movie one can see,his vision and creativity shining brightly. Every scene it seems has been hand crafted and all the sequences are closely linked to each other. The music too of the film is immensely pleasing to the ears. The songs give the aroma of the richness of the Indian village and are a treat to watch too. Above all the movie is about hope and values. Such a vivid interplay of emotions which are very close to the native Indian sensibilities is hardly ever seen in Indian cinema. The title is apt too surely this is the MOTHER India of all Indian films!
