A discovery of boredom

Like others really liked the first series but I'm struggling with the second and this episode is so dull I'm writing this review while watching hoping something interesting might happen.

Thoroughly Entertaining! (honestly)

I understand that if you've read the books you might be disappointed but for those you haven't then this is a very enjoyable and entertaining film. I would ignore all the ridiculous 1 star reviews and the anti Disney brigade. Very few films deserve to get 1 star and this is certainly not one of them. I thought the young cast were charming and perfect for this type of film. I especially liked Judi dench as you've never seen her before. Unless you have huge unrealistic expectations you will enjoy this film. It's a great family film that Disney have been doing for the last 70+ years.

Poor thing.

Having watched the brilliant 'Price of Coal' I had high hopes for this his first feature film since the equally brilliant 'Kes' but unfortunately this is a long way from either of them. Loach's usual use of improvisation using non actors is wholly unconvincing here and comes across no better than an average school production. A good story might have helped but this is also not adapted well.

Warning: Spoilers
A group of people discuss where is the most scenic part of 1930's England to drive through. Nicely Nostalgic but slightly spoiled at the end when it turns out it was an advert for Austin cars!

It's a real shame because this could have been either a good comedy or a heartfelt drama. It wants to be both and ends up being neither. As with a lot of films made in the last few years there is no sense of proportion. The main character has problems as does most people but for some reason he behaves like no person on earth would ever do. This puts him at a distance from you because if a character behaves in an unbelievable and irrational way then the film is undermined and loses all credibility. Maybe a better actor would have made it work but as talented as Cummings is he isn't Sam Rockwell. The only scene that worked for me was the very last one that was the only one that was real.
