Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: The Magnificent Ferengi (1998)
Brilliant
People will claim this episode is stupid and totally out of place in DS9, I don't care, it is an immensely fun episode. I love the fact that it is a parody of 'The Magnificent Seven' Western movie and it is a great adaption of the original. Every series can benefit from the odd comedic episode, and this is a great example.
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993)
Deep Space Sublime
Positives:
DS9 was so much darker than the other Star Treks and addressed themes such as war, terrorism, eugenics etc. Gone is the Voyager mentality of incessant exploration and negotiating with every single enemy you encounter. Sisko's approach is gritty and as a result feels more authentic than the more light-hearted approach of the other Star Trek captains. For example, Sisko is forced into irradiating an entire planet in order to flush out the Marqui terrorists, a decision that morally isn't right but is effective in that it coaxes the enemies into surrendering. Another instance is when he forges documents that bring the Romulans into the war. Again, not morally right, but effective in that the additional support helped them win the war. No more is everything bright and sparkly, the viewers get a real sense of desperation from the once perceived 'perfect' Federation. Despite all of the gloom, there are some genuinely comedic moments. The ferengi community on the station is always a great laugh and they took part in some of the most hilarious episodes, 'The Magnificent Ferengi' (a parody of the old western film 'The Magnificent Seven') involves Quark, Rom and Nog creating a posse of ferengis to help rescue Mugi who has been captured by the Dominion. Another funny episode they have featured in is 'Little Green Men' where Quark, Rom and Nog get transported back in time to Earth in 1947.
The characters of DS9 are brilliant. Sisko is a dark character who lost his wife to the Borg at Wolf 359. He leads his crew through the Dominion War whilst making unfavorably tough decisions that often compromise the principles of the very organization he is trying to protect. O'Brien and Worf come over from the Next Generation and make valuable additions to the cast. Bashir is very interesting because he has a controversial background of being genetically enhanced. We also witness his gradual transformation across the seven seasons from a naïve young man to an experienced Starfleet Officer. As previously mentioned, the ferengi are a great comedic addition but also serve, at some points, as more serious characters. For example, Nog loses his leg in battle and there is an entire episode dedicated to his slow and agonizing recovery. And then there is the enigmatic Elim Garak, the Cardassian tailor who is rumored to be a spy and is in my mind the best character in this show. On the exterior he is a witty conversationalist and a friendly shopkeeper, however he has a dark interior as a proficient assassin, saboteur and expert liar. Over the course of the show, we learn that he was once an Agent of the Cardassian Intelligence Agency, the Obsidian Order but was exiled for unknown reasons. Although he may initially appear an antagonist, Garak consistently proves himself a valuable asset to the Crew and makes friends with Bashir and Odo. Speaking of, Odo is another great character. He is a shapeshifter and chief of security on Deep Space Nine. For much of the early show, mystery surrounds his origins until it is revealed that his species of origin is the Founders, the leaders of the Dominion and enemies of the very people he has worked with. Seeing him torn between the two sides is fascinating. Gul Dukat is the best villain of the show. He continuously switches sides, helping Sisko and then betraying him. He has poor morals as the previous overseer of the occupation of Bajor and seeing his break down after the death of his daughter was a gift. Weyoun is another great villain. I've definitely omitted other characters but I cannot afford to describe all of them in such detiail as it would take all day.
The Dominion Storyline is perhaps one of the biggest reasons to watch this show. From the end of Season 2 until mid-Season 5, the Dominion is introduced as a major threat trying to destabilize the Alpha Quadrant through espionage and making alliances. However, from the end of Season 5 until the end of the show, the Dominion and the main powers of the Aplha Quadrant are embroiled in a devastating war. Here we see some of the most spectacular space battles ever made.
Negatives:
Seasons 1 and 2 are at points pretty standard. Yet there are still some good episodes. Do ensure you don't skip them as there are key episodes in them. Another grievance I have is that in the later seasons, the show ran out of special effects budget. Consequently, lots of the space battle footage is blatantly reused from earlier seasons. Its not a massive issue but nevertheless it is slightly annoying.
Overall, DS9 is in my mind the best Star Trek and I would thoroughly recommend it.
Game of Thrones (2011)
My favorite show of all time
I don't care if season 8 was completely underwhelming, I love GOT. When you ask me about it, I only consider seasons 1-7 as being part of the actual show, the last season is in my mind not Game of Thrones.
No other TV show has hooked me so much. No other show has kept me up to 4:00 A.M. because I just couldn't stop myself. Many will say Breaking Bad is superior. I admit Breaking Bad was perfect, but for me Game of Thrones was just something else. The characters were brilliant, the story lines were mesmerizing, the world was varied and fascinating and the lore was deep. Season 8 was such a shame, although this is my personal favorite, it prevented GOT from attaining divinity in the eyes of others.
Subnautica (2018)
One of my all-time favorite games
I won't spoil it for anyone but what I will say is that this game has become one of my favorites. I've been playing this game since November 2016 when it was in early access and since I have accumulated over 100 hours. Subnautica is an immensely beautiful game with a rich and interesting lore and many extremely fun things to do such as piloting submarines or discovering new species. It may seem like a standard survival game at first, but give it a chance because it actually has a great story. I just love this game to bits.
