633 Squadron (1964)
Wish I would have seen the entire film
First, I must state that I was quite disappointed by the comment by a poster stating that the "lack of Americans saving the day" was the reason for so many low votes. That is ignorance to the highest degree. Winning WWII was a group effort with supreme contributions from many countries.
I enjoyed what I saw, I thought the score was exceptional! While I am not a fan of current-day CGI-enhanced movies, the special effects, even for a 1964 movie, were below standard. It appeared to be a very low-budget film.
It was a great story and one I would like to learn more about. Cliff Robertson put in his normal quality performance. And, how can you not like a movie with Angus Lennie! VNG
The Naked Face (1984)
Bad movie, but bad enough to enjoy
I was getting ready to start some work, but saw this movie coming on cable. Saw the cast and thought that I really needed to watch this. Some of my favorite actors! I love Rod Steiger. But not in this film as his over-the-top persona was way too much to take. The final scene with Art Carney was a joke. It had the feel of a very cheap movie that bends reality to give a "shock scene".
It's a bad movie. Bad writing, totally uninspired cinematography. But, it was bad enough to keep me watching it, AND, keeping me from going to work.
Great cast put to great waste.
The Scout (1994)
What a Fun Movie!
If you ever had dreams of being a big-league star, in any sport, then you have to watch this flick. It's classic Albert Brooks. But, it is like watching a Rocky comedy. Tears come to my eyes evewn after the 10th viewing. Fraser is great. You don't need to be a sports fan to like the movie, it is good regardless. As a baseball fan, it was nice seeing Yankee Stadium. I went there in the last year of the original stadium. It was an historical stadium. Though, I hated paying $9 for a beer, but it was nice being able to take the subway to get there. Other baseball flicks that are good are "It Happens Every Spring" and naturally, "Bang the Drum Slowly".
Angels in the Outfield (1951)
A Fun Baseball Movie
I was so excited years ago when I heard a remake of this movie was going to happen. When I saw the remake, I realized that special effects, no matter how impressive they might be, do not make a movie necessarily good.
Paul Douglass and Janet Leigh do a great job in the original. One of my favorite character actors, King Donavan, has a small role as a reporter. The movie is corny in spots but it is fun and moves along well.
My favorite scene is when Douglass announces who will pitch in the game against the Giants. It is a scene a friend and I have reenacted hundreds of times over the years.
To paraphrase Douglass as manager Guffy McGovern, "you're getting a good movie".
The Hangover (2009)
Excellent Writing, superb acting, very clever
Anybody who comments about how this is a "guy's only film" should know that my doctorate wife laughed as hard and frequent as I have ever seen her laugh. This is an exceptionally well-written movie. There was only one spot where I felt I knew what was happening next. The Asian bad guy, Mr. Chow, was very funny at first but his gay side was overdone.
The ending was superb bringing the entire picture to closure for us. We laughed throughout the entire movie. My wife did not feel offended and we both want to go see it again. This movie is very well made.
It should be stated that we find very few funny movies being made in the past decade. The Hangover is a huge exception. This is a comedy with creativity. I haven't heard that much laughter in a theatre since "There's Something About Mary". I imagine that movie also insulted some people with some of its "vulgar humor".
The poster who said he felt he wasted $20 on the movie and the food he bought at the theater has judgment that cannot be trusted. After all, who spends that much on food at a movie theater?
