James Dean: The First American Teenager (1975)
Not a Bad Film
I taped this film off of a PBS affiliate in Upstate New York in 1991 and have kept the movie for all these years. This film looked rather low-budget (for a film that was 16 years of age in 1991, the color was clearly faded and the quality of the film used seemed to have degraded), but was pretty effectual in showing Dean's life. The interviews with those who worked with Dean are interesting and the music used in the film (mostly 1970s rock) adds a nice element to the movie. I would have liked to have seen interviews with people who may have known Dean in Fairmount, Indiana (whether it be relatives or others who knew him). Most of the people interviewed in this film were involved with Dean in his acting days. However, overall this is not a bad film.
Freaks and Geeks (1999)
An Excellent Show
This is by far an excellent show! I found this by accident on the Fox Family Channel as I was flipping through channels a few weeks ago. I find it to be excellent because of its honesty with teenagers in a high school surrounding. In a day of plastic television shows such as "Undressed" and "Dawson's Creek", this show is a refreshing change. This show isn't afraid to portray the real characters in high school, and not the uncaring athletes and cheerleaders that exist. I've also found the show to be excellent in the lessons it quietly eases into the show. To avoid making a spoiler message, I will not reveal what some of these lessons are, but you can find them in the show. I'm sorry more people never watched this show, but can that be because it wasn't given enough of a chance? Would this show have flown had it been aired a few more weeks? I guess I'll have to ponder these questions when I load another videotape into my machine to tape another episode of "Freaks and Geeks".
