Aiyyaa (2012)
10/10
Haven't laughed this much in a movie in a long while :)

First of all, Aiyyaa isn't meant to be taken seriously! Obviously! Nutty reviewers on the internet who talked of how this movie does not reflect the struggles of an average middle class girl etc. etc. need to take a long holiday. Am glad I ignored the bad reviews (where most of the badness was in the review - we need critics of critics) and the chap at the ticket counter who tried his best to avoid selling me tickets (it is very bad movie madam, it is too long madam, nobody is watching it, better watch some other movie) and went and watched it. The movie is cute. Very cute. And it's shot beautifully. And except for the usual Indian movie issues of slightly bad editing (although the editing is way way way better than in most Hindi movies), there isn't much else wrong with it. The cast is lovely. The dialogues are funny (provided you like / get the raunchy humour) and aren't dumbed down under the assumption that the entire audience consists of five year olds with an IQ of 10 that need everything explained to them at least three times. The main character in the movie (Meenakshi) is actually someone most urban women can relate to (when they are being honest and not self- righteous) especially cos the main eye-candy in the movie (Surya) is quite capable of getting women to lust after him in that way :). Jokes about women lusting after men tend to disturb a lot of insecure men so, women, don't go watch the movie with one of those chaps! Most of the jokes in the movie make fun of conventional / main stream ideas of romance and sex and if you have a problem with this, you are going to squirm through the movie. Also don't go watch the movie with mummy and daddy but do watch it. It's fun!

Prometheus (I) (2012)

Oh god! Who created this? They should have let the story evolve...

The ratings for this movie are very misleading and since all the reviews that really talk about what it's like have spoilers in them (which meant I didn't read them before I went and saw the film) I am going to try writing one with enough warnings in it but without spoilers (even if I am banished forever from IMDb in the attempt!). To start with, if you are planning to watch this movie, DON'T! Or go ahead if you are the sort of person who can completely blank out all logic while watching a movie and concentrate on the packaging cos not only is there no story, there is also no dialog (expect stuff in the "see Scott run, see Scott's dog, see Scott's dog run, run dog run" class)and the writers apparently don't speak much English (they use words that don't mean anything in the context and it is like listening to someone read a translation from an online-translator). The initial visuals are lovely, then a green chap appears (who is still very lovely) and then it all goes downhill from there! It's really completely downhill for the rest of the movie! They've taken a bunch of nice actors and arranged the storyboard so cunningly that you start disliking the entire lot (for the sheer unbelievable stupidity of the characters) within the first five minutes of their appearing on screen. One actually wants them to die and as quickly as possible. Waiting for bad things to happen to them is the only suspense in this film and it fails at even doing that well. The main horror is the screenplay and the main thrills it offers is when one hopes one will have one character less to listen to! Oh and there is absolutely no science in this fiction. Not even some common sense! Easily the worst film of the year!

Really funny!!!

One of the funniest movies in a while! The director gets the whole Indians abroad thing to absolute perfection. One felt like one had met everyone on screen before! All the actors except Shabhana Azmi were really good. OK...the actor who plays her daughter wasn't brilliant either but at least she wasn't full of herself. The plot itself was rather cute and the editing is very well done. Only issue with it is that the target audience is rather limited. You need to either be an Indian living abroad or know enough Indians living abroad to get most of the jokes. The whole thing is not to be taken seriously for even a moment of course!

This one gives Bend it like Beckham a serious run for its money.
