Hollyoaks (1995)
Standards are slipping.
Hollyoaks has produced a few decent enough storylines over the years, in recent times those would include a county lines drug epidemic, a harrowing child grooming storyline (very well acted by all involved), a far right terrorist organisation (with a very up to date depiction of the far right as they exist today) among others.
Plenty of social issues ranging from homelessness to LGBT issues are covered, sometimes a little on-the-nose and clunky but admirable nonetheless.
And then there's the nonsense which unfortunately makes up about 70% of this show.
The writing can never be consistently good, usually after a few weeks of TV Gold the show reverts back to it's usual fare of characters cheating on their partners with the mother in law, plastic "gangsters" who have no real structure to their criminal activity other than to be generically unlawful and "hard", students who never seem to study, people with 9-5 jobs who seem to permanently be on their lunch hour, mind-bendingly stupid decisions made by characters that only serve the purpose of added drama, Mercedes McQueen being an all round awful person and never facing any consequences etc...
Like any other soap if you've started you might as well keep watching regardless of the quality, every now and again you'll be treated to a decent storyline.
Antiques Roadshow (1979)
An antique of it's own...
I've been watching this marvellous program for many years now, too many to count!
Riveting stuff you see, a group of chaps bring their wares to get them evaluated by some very clever fellows with a jolly impressive background in antiques appraisal.
They'll give you a rather thorough history of the object and sometimes it'll bally well be worth tuppance!
Some chaps aren't quite as lucky the poor sods but that's the thrill of it you see, you don't know how valuable they are until you've had a jolly good rundown of the history!
An educational joy ride, that's what this program is and long may it continue!
Perhaps one day the Antiques Roadshow will have run long enough to be considered an Antique of it's own, in that case I would give it the highest appraisal, PRICELESS...
