Crossing Swords (2020)
A mixed bag!
This show leaves a lot to be desired in terms of comedy. But when it works, it WORKS! For the most part, the jokes don't land well, often falling flat. Though there were moments throughout that had me laughing to the point of tears. Sadly those moments are far and few between. A saving grace for this show is the beautiful and clever art style. The toy aspect that the whole show has kept pulling me coming back in.
The story had a great starting off point, however; eventually the over-the-top insanity derailed the main point of the story. The hole purpose the characters served became nearly lost by the end. Also there is character development, but it is sparse. And on one final note, the voice acting is excellent, (Thankfully!)
Overall this show is worth watching if you have nothing else to do. It has enough going for it as to not be a waste of time. Also if you are a Robot Chicken fan, this will scratch that itch. If there is a second season, all I wish for is higher grade comedy.
She-Ra and the Princesses of Power (2018)
No one should miss out on this show!! {NO SPOILERS}
This show is beyond amazing. It pulled me in from the very start, and never let go. I had doubts at first due to its score and reviews, but I'm so glad that I decided to watch it. This show has everything! Action, drama, representation, and so much more. I want to touch on the representation first because I know that can be a deterring factor for some people. So me personally as a man who, in terms of sexuality would be considered gay, I actually dislike representation in shows, due to it usually being pandering and how it negatively effects the story. This show, however; had extremely tasteful and maturely handled LGBTQ+ representation. Not once in the show is a character called, gay or straight. The only word every brought up is LOVE! This show is a learning lesson to anyone, no matter their age, that love isn't just about sexuality, because love is so much more. This shows explains that a bond isn't just formed because of what is between your legs. It explains that connections run deeper than that. The representation here is perfect, and suitable to all ages.
Now onto the rest of the show. The action is fast, strong, violent, but never crosses a line, where it would be inappropriate for children. The drama, and more specifically the emotional moments are also handled well. I cried so much, and for many different reasons. This show will have you on the edge of your seat during many different moments. You will cry, scream, laugh, and wonder where this show has been your whole life. Now the part I thought was the best was how the show represented people's bodies. There are so many body types here: Skinny, thick, bulky, short, and more. This is another reason why this show is great for kids, to inform them that being skinny isn't wrong, but it is also not the only option. It will teach them to embrace who they are fully and truthfully.
If you are looking for a show that has content for kids, teens, adults, and a variety of other people, then you have come to the right place. There a tough moments, and times where it can get pretty dark. But as I said before, it never crosses that line. And as a final note, the ending to She-ra is one of the best endings I've seen to a show in a very long time. GO WATCH IT!!!
