Spider-Man: Far from Home (2019)
Spider-Man: Far From Good
Everything about this movie feels misplaced, badly written and broken. It even uses badly written speeches and expositions as an excuse to explain the plot.
Everything gets intertwined with the socially broken behavior of all available characters, while the writing and acting is of the exact same style and quality as in most low budget shows for small children. Not a single character behaves like an actual human being, and not a single action scene looks real or believable. This entire movie could have been a video-game cutscene from an age long gone, when video games didn't make much sense and the only thing they wanted to achieve was some over the top action. Not even the big plot twist concerning the villain holds any surprises as he has been around in the comics for more than 30 years. Everybody who actually ever read or watched the old Spider-Man comics or cartoons knows who he is. The writing is so bad that it needs misplaced speeches and expositions to rapidly explain the events or plot points. They (the studio) literally wrote a villain who points at some random people while he yells about their contribution to the events that are unfolding because the viewer did not see it happen nor had any prior knowledge about their existence.
It's horrible. It doesn't even feel as if it had any type of directing behind it. The entire movie feels like an inhumane formula being executed by some overpaid employees.
Mortal Engines (2018)
A rather weird experience.
What if some Hobbits went trough a family drama which ends with only one survivor. A girl. The survivor is forced to roam the lands. Eventually the girl meets an ex- cyborg Terminator who keeps her alive and well, but he also develops feelings for the girl. She betrays him and runs away to start a quest of revenge against the initiator of her past family drama. A plot for murderous revenge leads her to a bunch of Jawa Sandcrawler vehicles roaming the lands while attempting to not be consumed by much larger vehicles... but everybody fears the biggest one. The capital Death Star of great Britain. The capital Death Star is on its way to obtaining the Eye of Sauron, an ancient weapon, in an attempt to fire it at the Asian walled city of Minas Tirith.
Our murderous heroin will meet exciting characters such as Paul Atreides, somebody who looks as if she ran away from the set of the Matrix while being dressed in red, the previously mentioned Cyborg who terminates more people in one movie than the Terminator android does over his entire career... and some dudes with dreadlocks. She also meets a bunch of other characters who tend to die in explosions. All of them live in a fictional world that is Maddened to the Max. This truly is a movie. A movie among movies.
In the end... i hope it's clear that this review is meant to be seen as a joke.
Seraphim Falls (2006)
A gripping movie.
This movie tells its story trough an old fashioned focus on the main characters. The actors communicate their emotional state and driving force trough body language and facial expressions, while the directing and cuts fill in the blanks.
Everything is filmed with very stable camerawork which only becomes unstable to improve immersion trough certain points of view. That alone could almost be seen as a lost form of art when compared to most modern movies.
The ending is perfect and could be compared to a certain other western movie named "High Plains Drifter". There is a certain supernatural feel to the events, as if life and death or heaven and hell have intervened. It was unexpected, yet it feels in place.
Sleeping Dogs (2012)
An over the top Chinese Cop movie, as a game.
This game feels and plays like an over the top Chinese cop movie, aided by well done voice acting. The general atmosphere of the open world really strengthens the feeling of being immersed in an older pseudo fictional representation of modern Hong Kong.
The story:
it plays in a really tight and controlled manner which allows for a great feeling of fitting into it all. There is no need to feel lost or bored in a vast city. The player can go out and do a lot of missions, and many side quests. This game defeats a lot of other open world games simply by those means alone.
The acting:
The voice acting is top notch, and as previously stated - The voice acting really is at a high level. The actors and actresses really hit the nail on the head.
It isn't perfect:
It has a few irritating issues with its control system when playing with a keyboard. Buttons tend to shift meaning while playing, making it possible to miss a few important counters while playing. It goes against muscle memory. Though that's figuratively the only true issue with its design.
Ghost in the Shell SAC_2045 (2020)
A worthy S.A.C. Sequel
SAC_2045 has a bit of a simple start with a rather fast and action driven episode, but even that episode contains many references to official artwork made by Masamune Shirow (Batou with a giant beer can, Motoko looking a lot more like she does in the original manga comics, and more) which fans or people who know the material should recognize. But! The fast and action driven start of the show isn't what anybody should ever judge it by.
The show soon picks up with a familiar Stand Alone Complex atmosphere and slowly opens up and begins to show the social en cultural impact of a fully digitized society. The elderly who remain analog, the side effects of "social justice" as performed by users of the internet, the political side-effects, and more. It's the same old Stand Alone Complex as ever before, which couldn't be said about Arise.
The graphical style isn't bad either, it has a style. A well thought out style with fluid motion. Many negative reviews clearly are extremely subjective. Made by people who saw the CGI renders and instantly decided to hate the show before, and without ever actually looking at it from a clean slate stance.
This is an actual, real, Stand Alone Complex sequel.
