Very british, in some sense
6 May 2024
What's the point of this small gem?

It's about Leon (getting to know to) being somewhat different, based on his ancestry in contrast to the environment and society he lives, just because of some information, that doesn't necessarily need to influence his life, but still manages to push him into a process of self discovery.

While the first half shows Leons life as a modern jew, maybe comparable to how "The Nanny" did, later on. This culture gives the movie some known, solid background, but the story could get transposed to combinations of cultures and societies, without losing its statement.

Leons real struggle turns around his two lovers: one girl dreaming of an exciting partner and therefore not willing to commit to him, another one, that just loves to scandalize in her art and her loving.

The second half comes up with the absurd twist of the (impossible) hybrid being (which is never shown), making it a kind of allegory for Leon and starting some discussions, where british comedies do excel.

Apart from Conny Booth (Fawlty Towers!), Maryam D'Abo (fresh from the Bond) and (the then lesser known?) Gina Bellman the cast bears no big names, but overall matching, sympathetic acting. The pace of the story runs smooth.

I give it a 7, because it proves decent movie can be made with minimum fundings.

A look back in time
11 March 2024
Over 40 years have passed, Sophie Marceau is nearly 60, by now, but recognizable and charming as ever (thinking of "Mrs. Mills" with Pierre Richard).

The phenomenon "La Boum" caught the major part of european kids at that time, and most get sent back to their youth, while watching it, as its an honest look at the time/decade and how teenagers and their parents felt and interacted.

While watching both movies again, it's quite noticeable, that this one wouldn't get a rating for the target audience today, as it depicts and talks of things, topics, details, events ... some people think, are not acceptable any more, despite the fact, that kids stumble across far more explicit stuff, every day.

Movies with teenagers (nearly) always are a mirror of that years society and look at them. So, comparing La Boum with todays "young movies" might serve as a warning from certain developments, that ignore the social and emotional reality behind.

Mixed feelings
31 January 2024
To start with the plus-side:

Fans of the comics will find literally 100s of details of all kind all over the movie, be it the outfits, Gastons questionable recipes, the evolution of his vehicle, his pets, the archaic instrument, the lighthouse (Ph*** batteries anyone?), the sweet relation to Jeanne....

Jeanne is great and many other essential characters are well transferred to the screen and presence.

One can somewhat live with the decision of some e-commerce startup instead of a publishing company, though, some of the originals subtones and interactions with other people in the office do get lost by that.

Also, the choice of the location with a big open spaces makes sense for storytelling (reminding me of the Jerry Lewis classic "The Ladies Man") and filming, compared to narrow rooms and hallways.

The major fail is the choice and depiction of Gaston himself and the shallow story. Of course, there has to be some story to being pushed ahead and the original cartoons don't have one (apart from the Bravo Brothers).

A better script would have boosted the overall impression.

Unacceptable decisions
31 January 2024
What's gone wrong with this one?

You can't take one of the top cartoon gems and make mistakes like

*) writing a stereotype, 007-like story + villain instead of wisely choosing one the the dozens of good ones available. The story also lacks real twists and stays far from the timing and advance of the original comics.

*) change essential details of the Spirou universe, like the first encounters of each other

*) the "plan" of Zorglub and his "rays" don't really come through

*) Spirou himself ... while not as bad, as Gaston (Lagaffe) in the other movie, is far from the potential of the role/character. Changing him to some pickpocket? Why the hell?!?!?

*) add the squirrel, but leave out its purpose as a character

*) last, not least: Since when is Seccotine a non-blonde and a love interest of Fantasio?!?!?

On the plus side: I liked the choice and depiction of Fantasio (apart from the Seccotine-thingy) and the way he fails at times.

Clavier might well work as the Count, but the role was sabotaged by the script.

Details like the helicopter (though: in the comic, it was invented by Fantasio!), the supercar (which has been developed in the course of events, not being just there) and the look of the mushrooms.

Little Spirou (2017)

Pretty entertaining, detailled and close to the source
30 January 2024
Knowing all original comics and having watched "The adventures of Spirou and Fantasio", "Gaston Lagaffe" and this one in a row, this one is way better:

All 3 movies from the Franquin/Spirou-universe have in common, that they include a lot of details of all kinds from the comics and don't depend on a heavily modified CGI look like "The Adventures of Tintin" (2011; which, honestly, was pretty good in many ways), or CGi/SFX for the action part, but still provide a colorful look and believable depiction of inventions from the comic books.

This one is a movie for fans of the comics AND for children, as they have been made in earlier times, like the War of the Buttons in 1962, or stories from "Le petit Nicolas", the legendary french childrens book.

While in the first half, the movie struggles a bit while introducing the "universe", characters and their relationships, it slides into the storyline, action, adventure and suspense in the second half.

The story doesn't rely on being set to a certain decade and may well be the 60ies or the presence (well, apart from mum's car). It tells a story of kids, their everyday life, school, friendship, worries, feuds, and how they interact with all kinds of adults, in a world, that hasn't grown over-complicated, yet.

Last, not least: The actors are well chosen and Pierre Richard shines anyway.

"Generation FPS"
3 January 2024
What's the point of this whole movie/franchise?

*) make some counterpart to Thor of Hemsworth *) add him to action hall of fame besides JB/MI/Rambo/you name it *) show (off) what is possible with practical SFX and detailled, planned camera work and preparation *) climb the top 5 of body count

Is it badly done? No, not in technical aspects.

Is it fun to watch? Depends on your focus and expectations: If one loves ego shooters, he will feel at home with this one.

If one doesn't mind cheesy, cliché character development - got for it.

If one has no problems the hero cries over his boy dying, but not mentioning dozens of people killed on his way to save "his family" ... watch it ... and maybe go for councelling.

Thing is:

Movies like this make Rambo (i) even better.

Tom Cruise might be a maniac, but his Ethan Hunt does more than dumb shooting and squeezing a tear.

"Silent Trigger" was an opera, compared to this one.

Hot Shots brought more plausible emotions and also more of a story to the screen.

Casting some computer game genre into a movie CAN work, but it needs more than perfection in SFX and camera work.

Seriously?!?
1 November 2023
Sure - when it comes to production, camera work, effects, costumes for some part, acting, ... we have seen much worse show.

But ... and this applies to quite a range of todays productions: While the story and assumption behind the whole thing sound quite intriguing, the script, storytelling and characters are ridiculous stereotypes of a superficial collective US hooray patriotism, following the same naive self-perception, which is like:

We do face a major problem.

There are good guys and really hatable villains (US, foreign or even from outer space).

The good ones will struggle and go beyond their ideals, a bunch of them dies on this path, anyone got a dramatic story or secrets from his past, some show or develop unexpected capabilities.

But in the end, all bad guys will die - the less bad ones earlier, the really bad ones in a showdown.

Many details won't match the premise or get a stupid explanation (e.g. Clothings, people are clean, medical problems are rare or when they come up, they can be treated easily in no time...)

Character stereotypes ... we have seen them all. Sometimes using the same actor (like Billy Burr in "Zoo")

Sure ... the flashbacks are chosen wisely, but still just add up to the stereotype, and the cliffhangers are well done.

Don't know, for how many episodes these keep me on the hook, but from now on, when choosing new shows, I won't go beyond Mrs. Maisel, which blows these mass productions out of the water by delivering fun, emotions, messages, characters and delightful situations, instead of some mass assembly line script flowing around dull patriotism without soul.

What's the scale for this one?
9 September 2023
Black Demon is indeed done with elder monster and horror movies in mind, but not exaggerated, like many in these genres. In fact: I think it is pretty realistic in many aspects.

It's not Jaws or - on the other extreme: The Meg. They knew it can't be - and so, they never wanted it to be like these reference movies.

But it's also not one of the many trash B/C-movies where sharks swim in sand or snow or fly through the air, not to speak of the dozen of genetics surrealisms and hybrids with other species or even machines, ending up in showdowns with even more ridiculous opponents, embedded in really stupid stories or myths.

So, with all these in mind, that really deserved a rating of 4 or less, it's way more on the Jaws side.

Yes. The story is not too deep, the cast/characters might need more edges (and less annoying, more elaborated family members) and a more crisp script, things like back stories of the characters and the company, subtle flashbacks, maybe some hints, if there's something more behind the myth of the monster.

"The Host" is the best example, of how to deal with limited resources in this genre.

Depends on you expectations
16 August 2023
You are eager for action enhanced by stylish SFX + new variations of classic vehicle chases? Sure - it's there.

You like at least 3 of the main actors? Go for it.

You are a true fan of Mission Impossible, James Bond, XxX/Vin Diesel or the Star Trek reboot? You will find clearly ripped-off scenes. Discussing their origins with film buffs for sure will make an interesting evening or quiz.

You prefer female action heroes? Well, Angelina Jolie/Salt did it better. Red Notice was better. WW was better. WW84 was better. Electra was worse. Catwoman/Hally Berry was worse.

Why? 'cause the story and characters were better there!

Eagle Eye was better. 'cause the idea of an ultra clever computer has been worked out there ... not just some ultra modern looking stuff that makes no sense concerning technical aspects or the story.

Thing is: A georgeous smile + trained body cannot replace certain qualities of the script, story line and acting.

The showdown is weak in any aspect, the male villain is flat, his side character is even more flat. (Btw - why is it, that today any super hacker has to be female?!?!?!)

Most MacGyver episodes (being rather cheaply done) delivered more substantial qualities.

To put it short: If you want to spend 2hs and gawk at Gal ... or Jamie, watch it, but don't start thinking over its details, afterwards.

Fresh proof, not only Hollywood can do it
15 April 2023
The special effects are pretty good, the look and its details are up to date, story telling deserves its purpose.

The idea itself got much more potential, enough for filling a small series, but was limited to a rudimentary thread, hinting many implications, but not working them out, which is, why I'd compare it to a long episode of "Black Mirror". There are barely superfluous dialogues or explanations of things, an scifi-approved adolescent couldn't figure out, on-the-fly, so, while the tempo of the action is moderate, it's never boring, like many other productions with limited budget.

I have no problems with the POV-aspect and its details (HUD), which give the feeling of a computer game, but I get, it's not for everyone. Watching and following "Cloverfield" was exhausting, in comparison.

Not bad, but also far from its possibilities
25 March 2023
This is not really about SciFi or extra terrestrial, as neither the technological aspects, nor the 1000 implications of such an event gets exploited, concerning science, international politics and diplomacy, economics, etc.

It's all about sociological aspects, a bit of religion, how influencing single individuals vs. Controlling groups vs. Getting the masses run into a wanted direction.

This show can be compared to "They live", "Body Snatchers" and some more, that are an allegory for a mostly unknowing society, with a small group uncovering some intruders, the motives on both sides, and the many conflicting decisions of how to handle the steps on a personal level, within the group, and towards the rest of society.

The production, look and acting mostly is fine, CGI is OK, though, scenes in the mothership are too obvious (but no bad, disturbing glitches).

The pacing of the script and details of distinct short threads of the story also do emphasize the underlying aspects of the individuals and the small group, than action or SciFi approaches, but maybe a bit more focus to the mass perception of the given events on the one side, and the many global implications would have helped the overall impression.

The distribution of expectable traits to the given characters is ... well .... not unexpected: Tough women, some tough guys, some stupid teens struggling to keep up with the obvious and hidden lies of the adults.

And that's the whole point, if you start thinking about the story, as an allegory to human societies (within and when interaction between different ones takes place):

Lies, sometimes to protect someone, sometimes because of a not too clear relation, but mostly due to hidden selfish motives = the dark side of manipulating others in myriads of situations.

Is it worth watching? You will know after 1-2 episodes.

Puppet theater
24 January 2023
*) Take ideas from "The Fury", X-Men, and "Jumper" *) make bit of X-Files for a while *) _try_ camera angles and editing from the classic western *) do "special effects" using nylon threads like in puppetry *) write some cheesy, predictable plot, dialogues and ending and *) leave plenty room for a sequel *) but completely forget to give the main characters some interesting traits and motives *) or even forget tell (or edit out), why the main FBI chick was treated as famous to one part of her colleagues, but pretty unknown to the other half.

Oooops. Did I spoil something? No, but after watching it, you will say: Yes, the summary told us all.

The story may well fit in an X-Files episode and probably had been much more entertaining, then.

Not really on the old level
3 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Despite the grateful ratings, this episode / season 2 doesn't really come near the original quality, but mostly repeats known patterns. Just a short excerpt:

*) siblings or pairs staining their heritage or responsibility by doing stereotype bad things - come on?!?!? Again?

*) especially the blonde in this one is a mixture of the old wedding ring + the gold fraud story from the original series

*) someone seeing through Sophie, though, after a set-up from an old partner, hints to some new string, but for this EP her reaction lacks the convincing finesse.

*) Breanna doesn't come anywhere near the genius of Hardison *) Wilson develops, but the authors don't seem to have a clear idea what to do with him, as Sophie got responsible for the "con aspect". Hutton/Nate layed a high bar there.

*) the stories got shallow, the cons are a shadow of former ones

*) changing the scenery/location is ok, but ... its possibilities don't really get used (apart from the river casino story)

*) Eliot and Parker seem ... tired.

+) reprising old faces is ok - go on and use them for the bigger storylines, not just as extras.

"Date Night" was the best episode in the current season, but S01 had more soul, clever twists, some freshness and development.

Being a huge fan from the old days, I think the production team + especially the authors could get more out of it, by stepping back and take a look back at the original top episodes. PLZ!!!!

Millennium (1989)
5/10
Too late - too little.
1 December 2022
I'm not gonna repeat, what others already summarized.

This movie is a relict, not from the 80ies, but 70ies. It tries to expand an idea, that might work being told like that, in a book, into a movie.

Zemeckis might have made a well paced 45min episode of some anthology series from it. Spielberg might have developed a mini series of 6*45min, adding answers to questions, that do arise while watching.

The time travel logic is faulty, there don't even show up anachronisms, as ... neither time adds time-specific elements or details. It shares the SFX style of "Logans Run", elements and look of "12 Monkeys", some Murdock (from MacGyver) wheelchair weirdo and a robot (?), which looks and behaves like a cross of the tin man (Oz) and "Box" from Logans Run, but at least it doesn't get as dumb as "Flight World War II" (which is impossible, anyway).

I doesn't answer even half of the arising questions, but delivers much babbling, that tries to draw some romance, but never explains, why the future people don't simply travel or spread to a context, that grants them survival, earlier. Neither does it explain, why this robot weirdo knows more, than the others, or what these mummies in the tubes are all about.

Every single minute, you think about it, opens up another flaw in the given story-wad (you cannot call it story LINE), but also makes clear what great potential the skeleton of the given elements have.

In the wide range of time travel movies, this one falls short without any good reason, a clever script could not have fixed with a few twists.

Really???
26 August 2022
During the 1st episode I told myself: Ok, this story might need to build up.

Ep 2: 20-something minutes and I experienced NOT A SINGLE moment of amusement or ANY emotional response.

No action, no surprises, no sophisticated dialogues, no interesting twists, no wow-factor at all. Just babbling and moaning, that she doesn't like her nickname.

Watching the washing machine turningo or a bunch of goldfish or some bumblebee checking out a flower delivers more substance and storytelling.

Well written shows like The Orville pack more fun, emotions and statements into a 2 minute scene, than this whole "episode".

On the good side? Tim Roth, bridging to the early days of this universe and the visual style of the ... 4/5-credits. These earn the 2 stars.

Oh c'mon!
15 June 2022
We like this show for it's fresh, pointed ideas und finer scripts than ST and its descendants, but this one was predictable as a puppet theater for 4 year olds.

The only excuse we could accept, if this episode contains a bunch of unnoticed details and easter eggs, building up a bigger storyline, beyond the Krill, but I don't think the introduced new "enemy" ("we go ... but not for ever!") introduces the potential of an interesting direction.

Depends on what you WANT to see in it
13 June 2022
Having seen a number of movies, that were really bad when it comes to acting, story, camerawork, timing and relatable characters, this one delivers quite solid treats.

Sure, you can compare it to Mad Max in some ways, or Resident Evil, or even identify some elements of Pinocchio.

Thing is: It's never boring, explains quite as much, as necessary, show plausible characters (good and bad), no absurd twists, some not too common action scenes (but never too long), and lets an unusual love story develop, with a background of a (at that time) slightly futuristic society, that became reality in some hurting aspects.

Last not least: Comparing Melanie Griffith to Dakota Johnson, (which is now) about this age, is another cherry (sic!) on the cake, though, her performance in "Working Girl" was her necessary step forward.

Ambivalent masterpiece
12 June 2022
What makes this movie so interesting?

For one: The ratings seem to be wider spread, than for the vast majority, so, depending on ones expectations, it obviously did a bunch of things quite good and failed bad in others.

DePalma, without any doubt, is a director of exceptional craftsmanship, who knows about great timing, motion and complex camera work, using elements like rain, light and perspective, which all work out in this one.

Also, DePalma always had Hitchcock-level stories and above-average cast.

So there we are, what might be the point with this one: It is not clear, whether/why some performances just didn't develop well, or if the scenes and character development were meant to be rather flat.

Considering the trivia, a lot of roles seem to have been handled like a hot potato, leading to low chemistry, not feeling as smooth and intense like in e.g. Mission Impossible.

Bruce Willis - no, glasses, a bottle, (still) hair and wearing a hat funny doesn't make him a struggling journalist.

Morgan Freeman - does great by delivering two essential statements, while Willis/Fallows adds nothing to it. Though on the other hand, both violate the credo: show, don't tell. Anyway: This guy knows how to do speaking parts (compare Under Suspicion).

Melanie Griffith ... hard to tell, if she was meant to play the mistress in a hurting flat way. In "Working Girl" she demonstrated, she can get way deeper.

Tom Hanks delivers a solid, calm performance and 2 great moments, one maybe re-interpreting his hysterical outbreak from "Money Pit", while one gets no real impression, what Sherman does in his job, in contrast to Gordon Gecko/Wall Street.

F. Murray Abraham - noticeable, and in one scene, reminds of Pacino in Scarface, 7 years before.

Poor Saul Rubinek got a lifetime subscription for some barely likeable loser stereotype.

Honorable mention: Beth Broderick molesting the copy machine.

So what might be the central problem? Maybe the script, that fails to add some intensity and more suspense to certain interactions and moments, giving the cast moments to show their talent, instead of flowing like a ditch of vanities.

The Orville: Majority Rule (2017)
Season 1, Episode 7
10/10
No doubt, one the most important TV shows episodes of the present times!
1 May 2022
Why? Because it describes the flaws of society since the rise of "social media", a an overall level, just like Black Mirror in "Nose dive" depicts similar effects on a personal level.

Society has got responsibilities, just as separation of powers, independency of justice and truth based on evidence is essential to a healthy state.

Not to forget: sense of proportions.

All the flaws, rising over the last 2 decades, have been packed into this neat episode, that any adult and kid of some age, can understand after seeing it.

Showing it at prime time in free TV, once a year, should be mandatory, until people and those controlling social media, start reflecting our problems.

The Circle (I) (2017)

Falls short, where Black Mirror shines
29 April 2022
Though, I am not sure, if there was a BM episode matching the special topic, depicted in "The Circle", the scripts of BM managed to deliver the message of questionable social and technical developments far better.

Concerning the rest: The cast was wasted, barely character development, especially for Tom Hanks + Patton Oswalt (which could do it...), the only role showing real emotions was done by Karen Gillan. I am not sure, if Emma Watson was expected/told to play a real naive millennial for purpose, as an exaggerated, unreflected, quite dumb archetype, or if the role was to big for her?!?!?! I mean: This generation feels clever enough to go for high-tech jobs of all kind, but on the other hand, behaves like a herd of sheep, running after stereotype speeches from their CEOs.

The chase scene and the visual effects (user interfaces etc.) are quite good, but that's it.

Maybe changing about 10-15 minutes of the movie + better cut might increase its rating by 2 stars.

The world NEEDS movies, series and documentations, that show the bad and dramatic developments to the audience, that lost the ability to recognize the signs of 1984 etc.

Short look back to season 2
23 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
While not as hilarious as some other episodes so far, this one contributes to some of the threads in a solid and necessary way:

The former happenings around Junior and his dad Glendon get much clearer.

Eli, back on his feet, is now willing to accept Jesse's attempts to prove himself as a leader, though, this doesn't solve the many conflicts between the kids and their partners.

Tiff still calls Judy (being twice her age?) her niece, while clearly being the child, taken care of, at last, though, Judy got a strange understanding of family and caring, as ever.

Kelvin repeats Jesus' expelling of the Pharsees from the temple and earns some respect from his questionnable flock.

Baby Billy gets another dimension, especially when Aimee-Leigh shows up as some kind of remorse, but of course, one cannot compensate for not being a dad for 20+ years, easily. At least Aimee-Leigh gets a great laugh.

Season 2 dismissed a bunch of details into the wild, and it seems, writers have a difficult to catch all these open strings in the finale: Who did the bloody job on the journalist?

Who sent the Ninja bikers?

Did we miss a foe or who is lying and hiding something?

The cliffhanger will make you eager for the finish!

Rollercoaster of *waaaah*, *ouch*, *headbang*, *lol* and *wow*
15 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The chain of cliffhangers goes on:

Eli is lucky not to see his "dynasty" continues to show their weird understanding of family, christianity and society:

Baby Billy delivers another scene proving his most despicable sides and Tiff grows into an-even-dumber-than-blonde-clichee --> *headbang*

The three "kids" once more mistake their behaviour for ... acceptable. ---> *waaaahh*

Poor Keeve again shows he's the only one with heart and soul (though not too bright), and gets punished and humiliated for his loyality --> *lol*

At last: Jesse's plan to catch the assassins, nearly fails, after he manages to send the mercenaries home in anger. *headbang*

BJ delivers a slapstick hattrick (where did the shuriken (throwing star) in his head come from? Some cut scene or an open thread, delivered in the next episode?), while Gideon gets his great, heartstopping finale ---> *wow*

Not to forget, the catchy moment of "Sassy on Sunday", while Jesse jams with the cattle taser in slowmo. *lol*

The Meg (2018)
7/10
Maybe a too benevolent view, but
13 February 2022
I like it for being entertaining, even when watching another time.

What should one expect, after Jaws, tons of C-Movies getting more ridiculous as they pushed quality beyond puppet theater, especially when projecting hybrids with other predators or putting the story in sand or snow, classics like Moby Dick, "Orca" (1977), not to talk of "Mechashark" and the like.....

This one, while using no really surprising story twists, introduce political correct diversity, an adorable clever young girl and its mother, someone dying for his lies (no surprise, so, no spoiler ;-) ) , and still a classic white tough alcohol proven hero, that is more than believable in the water (we all know, why) and knows how to blink into the camera, even when facing his ex. The remaining cast ... solid, while not A-lister gems.

The story won't go beyond "Jaws 2". But the movie introduces a lot of really good images, especially in the trench and doesn't try to overemphasize or push the used technical equipment too far.

Not to forget: The editing provides good timing and doesn't fall for MTV/Marvel style cuts and movement.

Some reviews mention, that the books are far better - which I don't dare doubting. Anyway: A book and a screenplay, that's 2 worlds.

The Meg sets a standard for this genre. Some will top it, many will fail.

12 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
What newcomers see in this episode:

A dysfunctional family around a loser shoe salesman dad, smuggling themselves into the first class airport lounge by disguising as a hippie band, for some free snacks there, and meet a bunch of post-fame musician potheads and Al ending up raping a sandwich with his mouth.

What fans see: An episode starting as usual with Al hunting for a little bit of happiness in his life, soom pressing his nose against the glass wall to the first class airport lobby, a world of musician legends, and in the first place: free food!

The end: Al humming a memorable solo on a salami sandwich, the kids and Peggy shining as a background vocals (which Katey did before acting, as insider know), in a fake live aid song production, making clever fun of every thinkable clichee.

There are many episodes I can remember. This one stands out when it comes to creativity and the guest stars making fun of themselves!

Why???
12 February 2022
I unmarked "spoilers", because 2 minutes into the movie, there will be no surprises, later on.

If you are a fan of the Grand Canyon and its beauty ... you won't see in this one.

If you like the story of a hidden valley and dramatic escape etc. ... go for "Dogman" (1995).

If you want aztecs spreading blood of victims .... watch "Apocalypto".

If you like Michael Shanks ... stay with "Stargate".

If you adore Shannen Doherty ... leave this one out, it doesn't add to her life achievement.

If you love movies with expeditions ... get the 30ies "The lost world".

2 stars, because it is not as stupid as "Journey to the Center of the Earth" (1993), the worst of all C-movies. If you love pure and utter trash - there you go.

If all you need is some non-surprising story while you do the ironing ... go ahead.
