This movie was filled with surprises for me. Indeed one of the best things that not so praised 2020's, brought to us.
As I say, maybe it's more of an opinion, but this movie got me.
MA Rainey's Black Bottom will always have e a place in my heart cause I could project Chadwick's trouble with the recent loss of my mother.
Of course the acting is marvelous in this movie, but there's also a layer of knowing that my mother struggled just like Chadwick, both with cancer and both passing away on May. And watching him him so fragile and skinny yet so energetic and passionate about his character, he became a personification of what my mother was during her last days.
Chadwick's gave a last master interpretation. You'll love him, laugh with him, struggle with him and even hate him.
That's love for your career, no matter what. That was my mom, standing strong, even when diesease kept her on bed.
Indeed this movie should be on Oscar's eyes.
Other curious things about this movie are, one, that this movie is based on a play. This may make the movie not original at all, but that doesn't make the movie less brilliant as it is.
The second thing was the makeup, cause it shocked me. What the hell were they thinking? I'm not saying that the makeup is bad cause it's also astonishing, hope this is not considered a spoiler but hell how they made MA look so sweaty and sticky.
Maybe you'll agree with me:
Viola's performance and personification of the real Mother of Blues is not the only highlight during the movie, but also the way she looks because of all that exaggerated makeup. She looks ugly and Viola is not an ugly actress.
I know that the real MA wasn't pretty at all, and for what I investigated, makeup artists agreedthat there are not many photos of Ma. Yes, they tried to make her look like her, just like any good makeup artist would, and theyclearly said that they wanted to express that lack of beauty on Viola but still take a makeup tendency for those times.
"We wanted her to try her best to use the makeup for that time, an portray his failure on it"- their words are something like that.
But there's a difference between a person who doesn't know how to makeup, and an exaggerated and grotesque makeup.
That's all I had to say, maybe you'll agree with me with the last point or not. Anyway this movie is a must-watch.
