Memory (2022)
All men bad.
Another movie giving out the same message. All men are bad especially white men.
I gave up after 30 mins of the little digs me.
On top of this Nielson is just too old for this genre and it shows I just couldn't take home seriously.
Not for me. 3 stars for the unusual location. (El Passo)
Elizabeth Harvest (2018)
Flawed.
There is giant plot hole i could not get over, how can a policeman be killed and there is no follow up? The sound mix is terrible, music over mumbled lines makes them inaudible and there are no subtitles. Some scenes are too dark and its about 30 minutes too long. As others have said this could be a decent Black Mirror episode. The story idea and the great looking women kept me watching so a generous 5 stars.
The Silent Sea (2021)
Great cgi, lazy writing, terrible physics.
If only the writers were as good as the cgi artists and programmers this series could have been brilliant.
But they are not and I bailed halfway through episode 2 not wanting to waste another 6 hours on it. All the usual tropes are there. Captain who won't listen to legitimate concerns. Amature inexperienced crew on an mission so important they aren't told what it is!. Stupidity. Example someone dies and with oxygen running out they just leave the body with it's remaining tank and walk off, helmets off when no one knows if it's safe. Physics. Gravity which comes and goes. Ect, ect, ect. I gave up when the captain said the equivalent of " lets split up"
3 stars for the cgi.
Cosmos (2019)
Slow slow slow
This film is over 2 hours long and it feels like more. There is a lot of dialogue attempting to give backstories to the characters but it gets boring and tedious. I know astronomy is never going to make an all action movie and they do try to generate some tension but it ultimately fall flat. 4 stars . You will need the fast forward button.
Arcane: League of Legends (2021)
The Critical Drinker brought me here
Without the Drinker I would have never known this existed and normally if he recommends I watch. I am 5 episodes in and totally hooked. I love the steam punk universe they have created and the fact that all of the main characters.have some backstory and reasons for their actions. The animation can look a little cartoony but is more than compensated for by the excellent voice acting and script. 8 stars from me.
Wrath of Man (2021)
Confusing and unbelievable
The timeline jumps around all the time.
The main characters background is needlessly mysterious.
Who are his associates?
Who is the woman who gets his Intel and fake id?
Stalham also appears to be invulnerable he is shot multiple times and is fully recovered in the next scene.
How did he know where the remaining bad guy lived at the end? If he knew that why not just go there before the robbery?
Almost the characters are unlikeable and you hardly care when they die.
Maybe the female guard Dana and her buddy in the van who were summarily dispatched by the 'inside man' garnered a tinge of wtf. The rest were bad guys and nobodies.
The action was well done but some of the dialogue was cringe
I made it to the end so 5 stars. It would have been 4 but I added 1 because there was no agenda tacked on.
Who is the woman who gets his Intel?
Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness (2021)
Worth my time
An animated cgi movie with a decent plot and reasonable voice acting which kept me engaged right up to the end. There appeared to me to be some huge unexplained location jumps for the characters which were jarring and of course the final battle which obviously was made to look like a video game level. I made it to the end and thought it was better than many live action movies I have watched lately. 5 stars from me.
Time of Death (2013)
Sloppy writing but I made to the end
The plot idea was OK but the execution was poor and they missed a chance at the end.
They shoehorned some sex/love into this for no decerable reason, it was very awkward and could have done better by creating some sexual tension which never gets resolved . At the end I fully expected the sister to drag the remaining killer over the cliff for them both to die. Instead she is shot by the females detective which was very unsatisfactory. Lastly there was that stupid kiss scene at the very end.
4 stars for the plot which kept me engaged without too much fast forwarding.
Free Guy (2021)
Not for me
I bailed out at around 20 minutes if you watch it you will know why. I do not like being lectured to about why I am a bad person who shouldn't complain. I knew after that incident where this was probably going. I suspect the ludicrously high score is falsely inflated as my first review of this has mysteriously been erased.
I Think We're Alone Now (2018)
Slow, very, very slow.
Unwatchable without the fast forward button the plot is paper thin, nothing happens until the last act and the sound for the dialogue is terrible.
3 stars for Drinklige and some of the cinematography.
Black Box (2020)
Rescue by call center
That's what it seemed like for much of this ultra low budget movie.
The Manchester accents grated and at times made it sound like a UK TV soap.
The little bit of action was totally unnecessary and unbelievable when they could just have had the pods dock together normally and have the other guy already unconscious to achieve the same result.
However the plot was interesting enough to keep me guessing so that's why it gets 4 stars.
With a better budget, screenplay and appropriate actors this could be so much better.
Edge of Tomorrow (2014)
Starship Troopers and Groundhog Day had a baby
In 2020 good sci-fi is hard to find so i looked back to 2014 and found this gem which is better than just about anything made in the last few years.
This is an action packed alien invasion / time loop story which I very much enjoyed. The main characters are well acted as are the support, there is some intentional humour even during the brutal action sequences. I was worried the time loop narrative would get repetitive and boring but story moved along quickly enough to keep me interested
The sets and production values are AAA blockbuster standard but are let down slightly by the predictable CGI monsters moving at lightening speed that all these types of movies seem to have.
All in all 8 stars from me.
Wrecked (2010)
Very very slow
Man crawls around a forest I think he hallucinates aswell.
I really dislike films like this with so many unresolved points. I confess I may have missed something because I had to fast forward past all the waiting and crawling i was so so slow, nothing much happens for ages at a time.
So some spoiler questions
Was the dog real or imagined?
Was the cougar real or imagined?
Who was the guy with the rifle?
Why did he leave without taking the cash?
Why didnt the rife guy just shoot the injured guy from a safe distance?
Was the girl real or imagined?
Was she the bank teller or his girlfriend or someone else?
Is she dead or alive?
How can he travel down river and finish up back where he stared?
Is the injured guy impervious to hypothermia after swimming in freezing cold Rapids?
Who was the dead guy on the road?
If he was a robber how did he get there?
I am sure there are more.
3 stars for the acting cannot save this film.
Phantom (2013)
Good sub film
This film has a good plot reasonably rounded characters is well acted in what appears to be a actual submarine.
Yes some of the combat situations are probably unrealistic but it's a fictional film not a documentary. Because it's made in 2013 there is no sjw nonsense and It kept me interested right to the end.
7 stars from me.
Reality Z (2020)
It's a Brazilian Dead Set remake
It is exactly the same as British show Dead Set. Exactly the same, scene by scene.
So there is no reason an English speaker would want to watch this poorly dubbed version of the same story.
Midnight Special (2016)
Derivative science fi
The story pulls scenes and plotlines from many other films and has a very weak ending.
I've seen this film before in parts by watching many others over the years.
But somehow it kept me interested without the FF Button so that gets it a 4 from me.
Robot World (2015)
Don't waste your life here.
Go and watch some paint dry it will deliver more entertainment than this trash.
It's an ultra low budget homemade 10 minute short film implausibley streched to over an hour and half.
There is only one character no dialogue and nothing much happens.
Anyone making it to the end without fast forwarding should be awarded a prize.
Survivor (2014)
Hot girl runs and fights.
That's it. After she lands on the planet the same scene is repeated over and over. 110 pound girl defeats larger stronger men who helpfully attack her one at a time.
I made only made to the end with lots of fast forward and I know I didn't miss any vital plot points because there aren't any.
3 stars for the hot girl that's it.
Tales from the Loop (2020)
So slow it almost stops
A 10 minute story stretched to fill 60 minutes with constant 30 second moody shots of the characters slowly walking or standing and staring anything really except moving the plot along. The music is depressing. You will be fast forwarding almost straight away.
There isnt a cohesive plot and the characters make descions which are beyond stupid.
Another chance missed to make a great series from a promising idea.
I gave up halfway through episode 3 I dont think I was alone.
3 stars for the idea and cinematography.
