Rick and Morty: Unmortricken (2023)
Flashy but nothing new to say.
I dont miss the voice of Justin Roiland, the replacements are fine. What I miss is his contribution to the creative process that created a social commentary that was revolutionary.
Since the start of this season all the characters are trapped inside their parameters. There is no creative evolution, nothing new to say.
Some might say that happened seasons ago. Id like to believe there had been at very least some glimmers.
This episode, despite it bringing new facts to the story, doesn't create any existential growth for the characters. IMHO it in fact weakens them by showing they are unable to evolve even when the opportunity is there for the taking. It's a soul less gawking fest for the viewer: a lot of flash but no insight.
I try to be loyal and I keep watching it hoping something new will happen but nothing does. The only good thing I can say is that it's better than the majority of television but thats as much a comment on TV as it is on the show. 😕
Religulous (2008)
Idiot at work
From a guy who doesn't believe in vaccination or that germs cause diseases, Bill Maher doesn't hesitate to plumb the depth of his stupidity by flaunting his inability to distinguish between mythology and empirical data. Relentlessly he succeeds in his attempt to prove that he's incapable of intelligent thought. Which might be funny had it been a spoof of anti-religion bigotry, but instead his mania to prove his untenable point leads to an uninteresting exposition of a dull and frustrated white man's inability to comprehend the world around him. Never answering the question, why should we care, we're left with no reason to watch this movie. Thats the difference between this and Baron Sasha Cohen's Borat.
The Perfect You (2002)
Good pace..light but with some insight that gives it stability
I really liked it. Good paced, light hearted comedy about what men and women hope for from love. Lots of little tidbits for those who want something a bit deeper, but none of it in your face. I was quite impressed with Jenny McCarthy's performance. I think she can break out of the "sex symbol" mode and establish herself as a bona fide actress. I hope she gets more roles that challenge and allow her to exercise more of her acting skills.
Eigeman reminded me of a younger Charles Brodin.. but his performance worked well.
The Million Dollar Hotel (2000)
Well paced and thoughtful movie- One of my top 10!
This movie is both well paced and thoughtful, and it works on many levels, which gives it a richness that so many movies lack. While the plot moves the movie along at a good pace, the movie has a philosophical grounding that very few movies possess. This grounding provides an intellectual breadth that enables a legitimate discussion (not dictation) of who we are, what are we worth and how we value of our relationships. Though religion is not mentioned at all, I consider it to be a religious movie because it explored questions that provoked (at least in me) questions about G-d.
The music by U2 is excellent. It enhances the visual by complementing the visual with the appropriate tone and mood.
The cast is very good, Jimmy Smits is excellent, Mel Gibson gives an outstanding performance and shows he's a great actor whose talent is indeed independent of his star power, but clearly the movie is bigger than any of the actor's performances, as well as it should be.
The only negative is the performance of Milla Jovovich. I've found her range so very limited in the past (not much beyond a frantic expression). Here she does much better to the point where her performance is, if not adequate, then tolerable, but she still falls significantly short of what the role offered. Luckily the story supports her and her inadequacies as an actress does not impair the movie.
I gave it a 10 despite Jovovich.
