The Book of Boba Fett: Chapter 1: Stranger in a Strange Land (2021)
Just being honest.
The middle fight scene was sloppy with poor choreography and the way he took down the monster at the end was ridiculous. He didn't even wrap the chain around the monster's neck and squeeze the life out of it. He just pulled back on the chain and somehow that suffocated a 20ft beast.
One thing I know about Disney Plus TV shows is they always have a few bad episodes where nothing happens and then a few episodes that are epic. So it wouldn't surprise me if this picked up from episode 2 or 3. But I'm not gonna lie and say this, as a standalone episode, was good. The only thing I was impressed by was the CGI and the design of that monster who reminded me of General Krell from The Clone Wars.
Virgin River: The Sun Also Rises (2021)
Too soapy
First two seasons had direction. Felt like it was moving towards something, and I wanted to see what happened next. Now it's just drama for the sake of drama. Everyone is purposefully doing annoying things to create some kind of unnecessary situation. Ricky and Lizzie are grinding my gears. Just tell her you joined the marines. It's not difficult. But he'll keep it a secret because "I didn't know how to tell you" (you just told her, dummy). Even Mel is getting annoying. In the last episode didn't she chastise Jack for being overly anxious and not trusting what she says? Then in this episode she says something along the lines of "but things are only gonna get harder. You have two babies on the way. You think you know what you want but that will change in the future". So she's doing exactly the same thing as what she criticised Jack for. That's literally all he said in the first place, and she told him to get out. I got this far so might as well finish season 3. But after the finale I think Im done and won't be watching season 4. These type of shows only get more soapy and aimless as each season goes on.
Virgin River: Life and Death (2021)
Mel is getting annoying
Mel was great for the first two seasons but she's now being written as one of those self-righteous TV characters that can't do any wrong. Even when she's wrong, she's right. Like when she told Jack about Doc's retirement. When Doc confronts her about it, she makes excuses and somehow the episode ends with him apologising to her.
Mel has been going on and on and on about having a baby for 3 seasons. She pressures Jack about the baby, but in the same breath implies that it's all in Jack's head and he's being anxious and paranoid for no reason. Of course it ends with Jack grovelling for forgiveness while Mel is in the right again.
Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous (2020)
Didn't expect to get past 10 minutes
Pros:
- Great soundtrack.
- Good story. The animation style may fool you into thinking this is a show for 5 year olds. But there's actually some grown up plot lines here with lies, betrayals and twists.
Cons:
- Animation could be better. Characters can be waxy-looking and the background can look hazy-ish. Also things like dirt, grass and clothing textures aren't as detailed as in other animations.
- Sometimes it feels like they get themselves into trouble just for the sake of it. Being a kid's show, naturally there has to be drama. Someone always had to trip, or drop their phone, or crash the car. Anything to instigate a dinosaur chase.
Overall, good. I'm 25. I'm not the target audience, but the story was good enough to keep me pressing "next episode".
The Good Cop: Will Big Tony Roll Over? (2018)
Good episode
The informant could have easily told the detective "it's in the cigars" rather than writing down his number on a dollar bill. That led to an unnecessary side plot with Burl and Cora trying to track a dollar bill through New York.
Not to mention, Burl's incompetence literally got the informant killed. I'm guessing the next episode is just gonna skip right past that.
I think to enjoy The Good Cop you have to look past a few things. It doesn't take itself too seriously. It's more like 'Death in Paradise' than 'Bosch'. If you're ok with that, you'll enjoy this episode and the series as a whole.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine: He Said, She Said (2019)
B99's Worst Episode
I genuinely have no problem with an episode tackling a real world problem such as sexual harassment in the workplace. I've read some reviews here that say "it wasn't subtle". It doesn't have to be subtle. Tackle it head on if you wish. That's not my issue.
My problem is that TV show writers (B99 isn't the first) keep approaching the discussion in the same way. As if 1) the audience is 5 years old. And 2) every man is evil.
Also, didn't Wunch constantly touch Captain Holt suggestively while frisking him? The writers literally created a running joke where whenever Wunch and Holt met, she would frisk him and suggestively touch his thigh/groin area and his chest.
Would Brooklyn Nine Nine still be a show if it were the other way around?
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier: Truth (2021)
Doesn't add up
What doesn't make sense to me is that Sam is already a hero. He's already adored and idolised by many. He already has respect from most people. He's fought alongside Captain America and the Avengers for a long time. There's already a high-ranking black hero in the US Military: War Machine.
So the reason he never wanted to pick up the shield is because...he's black?
That aside, it was generally a good episode. Not as much action, but it's ok to have some slower paced episodes to focus on families, flesh out the characters and set up the finale.
But his reason for not wanting to become Captain America was weak, given his status as a much-loved world hero.
In the comics, when Steve was deprived of the super-soldier serum and started to age quickly, he handled the mantle to Falcon, who accepted it. It felt natural given their relationship and it made sense.
I feel like the writers are just trying to shoehorn the race thing due to the current climate in the real world today. Instead of thinking about what actually makes sense for Falcon who has been a well respected hero, army vet and Government agent for years already.
