Marcella (2016)
Unlikable lead character
I would have given the first season a 6 on its own. The plot was relatively interesting and the acting was good. Unfortunately, none of the characters are particularly likable, and they only get worse the more you watch. I found myself unable to respect or sympathize with Marcella because she was just such a jerk all the time. I wanted so badly to root for her - she's a smart, strong woman doing a really hard job and dealing with some tough personal issues. But every time she opened her mouth, she was rude, even childish, and angrily blamed everyone else for everything happening to her. Any sympathy I had just evaporated.
Second season was worse, maybe a 4. The plot has the potential to be so interesting, but I seriously need at least one character to like. With every episode, I liked Marcella less. And with several plot lines to follow, it's difficult to keep up when you just don't care what happens to the main character anymore. I was determined to finish the season in hopes it would wrap up in a satisfying manner. No luck there. If I had made it that far without hating Marcella, the last several minutes of the final episode would have done it.
I'm not even attempting the third season.
The Magic of Belle Isle (2012)
Forced Romance
Really enjoyed the movie overall but thought the romance between Charlotte and Monty was ridiculous. I hate when a romance is forced into a plot because it's part of the formula and not because it adds depth to the story. It would have been more meaningful to me had Monty been drawn in solely by the girls and a sense of family rather than an attraction to a woman 30 years or more his junior. It would have been better if Monty and Charlotte had more of a father/daughter vibe, in my opinion.
The Prom (2020)
The Best Worst Movie Ever
I've never written a review on here, but I suspected a lot of people wouldn't appreciate this movie for what it is, so I had to put in my two cents.
The Prom is cliche, predictable, unrealistic, and completely fantastic! The cast makes it, including Jo Ellen Pellman. These huge stars addressing a serious issue without taking themselves seriously at all was just wonderful.
I've loved Streep, Key, Kidman, Corden, and Rannells in other stuff but would never have thought to put them all together. I'm so glad somebody did because the movie couldn't have been cast more perfectly in my opinion, and they all played off each other in the most fabulous way. And Pellman was wonderful as Emma.
The dramatic portions were overly sentimental, the comedy expected, and the plot exactly what you think it will be. And I loved every minute of it! I think the movie is exactly what it set out to be and the actors delivered it perfectly.
There's a message in the movie but instead of it being pushed in your face, it's just sung right into your heart. The point was to NOT take itself too seriously. I mean, the scripture song in the mall? Come on! And yet it was perfect!
I think the main theme in the movie is a vitally important one, but the point couldn't have been made in a more hilariously poignant, fun, feel-good kind of way.
