Home Team (2022)
Ok fun
A wholesome type fun movie. Effortless. A good family watch. Kevin delivers his usual bland brand of humor, while the other guy Rob is ok too. Didn't dwell at all on the NFL scandal which was a refreshing twist.
Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)
Was ok, but..
...wait, I need 150 characters to lay down a review? Well it was fun and all that - you know, the usual jumping around, high octane flips, completely unrealistic escapades of weird characters doing amazing things. But these long drug out endings suck. Just finish the damn thing. Geeesh.
Decrypted (2021)
Semi woke take on current state of collective consciousness
Sophomorish attempt at a pretty good cinematic idea - demonstrating non politically correct views on various topics of interests.
Dialogue pushes pass socially acceptable opinions and shows the psychological truth behind why some people choose to do what they do.
Killer Camera Monsters (2020)
...bad enough to be good enuf?
... almost, but it took itself too seriously. Downfall. Had they melted it down into a smelly little swirl of pure absurdity, sprinkled with smatterings of downright goofiness, then it might have stood a better chance. The acting was bad enough that it could have worked. While the premise offered a broad field to plow, it could have been made delightfully campy, wonderfully stupid and pleasantly preposterous - no doubt it would have been more fun to experience, and had much broader appeal. As it stands - a tad boring.
House of Shadows (2020)
At least ....
... the lead characters had chemistry. If nothing else - it's fun to watch their interplay. It's cute. The concept isn't completely original, but it has potential; just wasn't flushed out enough. But for sophomorish fare - it's decent.
Bridgerton (2020)
Though not history - a historical fact remains
Central parts of this filmed fantasy aren't far from old fact. Back in the day King George III of England married Sophia Charlotte von Mecklenburg-Streleitz; a mulatto of the Portuguese aristocratic bloodline (who in fact actually looks like one of the female characters). They had 13 brown babies which ran all through the prominent houses of that century.
The scenes are slick, the intrigue compelling - the minds of man are no-doubt the same now as always. Game, as it is played on an upper-class level of privilege and prestige. A good watch.
Little Monsters (2019)
Funny / Warm
This was a pleasantly warm-hearted, evenly funny movie to watch. At points laughed out loud. Particularly found Gad's performance refreshing in a sleezy counterpoint kinda way. Nupita was at once sweet, soft, strong and fierce - she pulled it off beautifully. Alexander played a charming goof, while the kid's performance blended perfectly. A wonderful soup, with a touch of lil soul.
Midsommar (2019)
Re-hash
Was simply a take on the old cult classic - "The Wicker Man". If you've seen that one; either the original version of it, or the one with Nicholas Cage - then "midsommer" makes more sense. Though in The Wicker Man, the back story is more developed and integrated into the telling.
Insofar as the premise goes, summer solstice celebrations are universal. That's what Midsummer, and the Maypole is all about. In Scandinavia the sun stays up virtually the entire day at this point of the sun's cycle. Human sacrifices were well known to take place in order to ensure success of the following years crops.
The ancient Druids had the practice of burning humans alive in a tree made of wicker.
Not quite a horror movie from that standpoint. But, this was not unwell made.
