A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010)
Yet again Hollywood's lack of originality leads to a disgraceful remake.
This movie has maybe 10% of depth the original and even the entire series possessed. Crucial things such as plot, pace and back story are just non existent-result being not knowing or even caring about any of the characters, including the notorious Nancy. There is absolutely no suspense at all. I have seen Lifetime movies with more scares. What scares you do find are typical "it gets quiet then a loud noise" disgraces (You see Freddy in the first 5 minutes of the film, if that tells you anything). The shadowy build up of the original was just not even considered here.
Don't even get me started on the CGI, it's terrible and looks like it cost no more than what Michael Bay pays for a typical lunch. The infamous scenes ( maybe two or three?) that are reused in this adaption last no more than a flash second and are so out of place they should have just been left out. Also the surreal 'dream world' of the original series, totally gone and removed, replaced by one semi appealing 'snow dream' and that is being polite. I fail to see how this movie is rated higher than pg13 there is just nothing there you don't see on every other crime drama past 8pm.
Jackie is definitely no Robert but if you think of him as "another version" of Freddy, then he pulls it off pretty well, he just has absolutely nothing to work with and it's only his personal style and mannerisms that bring any quality to his character, his dialog and direction are just purely redundant.
As for Nancy and all the rest of the cast, think Twilight and High School Musical, if Disney made horror movies, this would be one of them.
For the younger generation,(and I am only 25) sure go watch this but make sure to take the time to watch the original, you will be blown away and I would hate to see it not rediscovered because of the moronic outcome of this adaption. I only give this movie 4 stars, for nostalgia and a hope that if they continue with this mess, it will switch hands (and maybe back into Cravens)
Michael Bay and Platinum just stop already. The egotistical idea that you can improve on classic concepts from cartoons to films, has been proved (once again) to be impossible and offensive.
Laid to Rest (2009)
Best horror movie I have seen in a long time!
My initial reaction to this title was, that it was going to be another B grade production. While the acting tends to fall in that direction, it's actually a surprisingly good film! First and foremost, the makeup team that worked on this film deserve Oscars, There are a few scenes that actually turned my stomach. It will definitely satisfy a generation that has a subsequently high shock level, definitely one of the positive points of this film.
Second, no one really watches a horror flick for it's storyline and guess what, you aren't really going to get one. This film doesn't become heavy trying to be something it's not. There is no in depth plot or annoying flashbacks, it just reflects slasher films like the original Halloween, where you are left with no real rhyme or reason, just 2 hours of cat and mouse, slicing and dicing.
There are no flashy effects or disappointing CGI, it's just a genuinely good slasher film that relies on what makes slasher films work, thrills and kills.
Legacy (2008)
Skip it.
This movie is terrible. The story could have been decent (think Weekend at Bernies meets Mean Girls) but it never takes off. Instead you are given over an hour of Haley Duff doing her best to act, in a cheap synthetic wig and a wardrobe bested by Sears. The rest of the actors are not that great either, in fact forgettable...the wig is the star. The dialog is cheap and rides the current 'netspeak' craze, "Totes!", for example. You spend 99.8% of the movie in a pink house and like with the storyline, you are stuck there. From impromptu jello wrestling to hand jobs, you are given nothing more than a collage of 'national lampoon ultra lite', cliché, offerings.
Obviously made on a shoestring budget (again, the wig) it's like a Direct to DVD student film, slathered in pink.
Catacombs (2007)
Interesting concept that falls flat.
The premise is interesting enough. The lead actress goes to France to meet her sister and ultimately ends up at an underground rave in the Catacombs that apparently reside under the streets of Paris. The biggest issues for me were the apparent low budget and poor acting. None of the characters are engaging and honestly you never learn enough about them to become invested and there are a lot of plot holes (such as what actually happened to the girl in the opening credits) and again, no character development so you never learn the reason behind a lot of things. The movie rushes past plot and point and lingers on a lot of flashing lights that will cause a seizure. I knew from the beginning what the ending would be any anyone who pays attention will probably figure it out as well. The whole "Catacombs" set looks like something made from Halloween Store supplies and there isn't enough gore or violence to redeem it, as anything other than a cheap suspense film. I didn't like it, but the general premise is enough for me to give it a 3.
La terza madre (2007)
Doesn't hold a candle to it's predecessors.
For me, it just didn't pack the same visual and suspenseful punch of it's predecessors. I honestly feel like post 80's Argento just seems to be, lost. Long gone are the beautiful images and dream-like atmospheres, seemingly replaced by predictability and well...poor CGI. In my opinion if Dario would just stop trying to be forward and current in his productions and just peel back to the raw, bare tactics he used before then I think a lot of his recent movies could have been successes, including this one. The story for me, was just incomprehensible and honestly even the "gore" was irrelevant and IMO,conventional. To it's credit it does hold true as a "sequel" to Suspiria and Inferno, by referencing both, but if you are hoping to witness or learn anything more than what you already know...you won't, they are flyby references. We all know Dario has a hard time ending a film, but this ending...it seemed to be him laughing at the fact he doesn't know how to end one. It was just over-all a mess, for this fan. Major points for the score though,it was amazing, as always.
Severance (2006)
Hate Your Co-workers? Have a sense of Humor? Watch this Film!
It's nice to see a "serious" movie, not take itself so seriously.
This film is golden because of its mixture of horror, suspense, and humor. Most importantly, the balance of those moods, never allow the movie to slip into a "slasher" or "camp" experience.
There are true moments of Gore which will satisfy the Horror fan. True moments of sarcastic humor that will satisfy the Comedy fan. There is even a bit of "Grind house" appeal, especially in the final scenes and there are even homages to such films as Clockwork Orange, during a "day dream" scene.
Over all if you hate your job, your co-workers, and you have a sense of humor, then you will enjoy this film.
Kuchisake-onna (2007)
Average Asian horror that never fills in the blanks
Pretty average Asian Horror film that still seems to linger in the "long hair creepy woman" category but, the storyline is promising and the creep factor is there, (in small doses, thanks to makeup) but if you are not a fan of plot holes or unexplained elements, (which sometimes work in horror, IMO) then you will not enjoy this film. There is very little gore and what is there is usually in a "cut-away" scene (this is a film that would probably just get a pg-13 by American standards)-Overall the film just doesn't satisfy, absolutely no character development and not enough "suspense" to really make it an enjoyable film.
Incubus (2006)
One of the worst films I have ever seen.
I could not even get through this film. It had to be turned off. I tried to give Tara the benefit of the doubt since I had recently watched Devil's Pond and found it mildly enjoyable but this is just the worst film I have tried to watch in a long time. The acting and dialog are beyond corny and laughable. It's B-grade in terms of premise and execution. The concept of the film is so far-fetched its hard to even get into,I will venture to say its impossible to get into. Also, who ever dressed Tara in that see-through top needs to be exiled from working in film. The movie description makes you think you will see a nice Nightmare on Elm Street homage or something along those lines but trust me, you wont. the only horror about this film is the fact you have to pay to watch it. -the positive ratings here are obviously done by someone associated with the film, check their comment histories-
