Fame (1980)
Still amazing
Do not miss this picture that defies ages. With no hesitation, a masterpiece. Not only the script and the music but also choregraphy, casting,
cut : everything contributes to the perfect achievement. Now nearly 25 years ago and still amazing of maturity, art and
sensitivity. Available now in DVD, do not miss either. The transfert is perfect
and the sound re-boosted. One mystery remains about this superb work : why the actors did
not succeed better after this flashing start ?
Chocolat (2000)
A bit of Amelie Poulain
Although anterior, this Chocolate has a bit of Amelie Poulain, a
modern fairy tale full of humanity, with the spicy chemistry of a
complete range of different chocolat tastes and cures. The cast is impressive both in names and performances. Juliette Binoche, of course, too rare on screen delivers her best,
the utmost being this short sequence on boat with J. Depp. This last is equals to himself : cool and deep together. But definitely, the most pleasant surprises come from Judi Dench
and Carrie-Anne Moss. Both act beautifully with a perfect sens of
timing and gradual feeling. Awkwardly this movie was better praised in USA than in Europe. In Belgium and France, "official" critics were rather severe in
assessing the movie. Probably the cause for this was the english
language chosen for a script happening in a french small town. To my french speaking friends, I just tell them : try to forget this the
first ten minutes and you won't be disappointed.
Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain (2001)
Fabulous movie
Simply a true masterpiece. With brilliant, innovative and inspired style a story like a fairy tale. The script is smart, original and solid as a rock. An enjoying humour runs along the story notwithstanding the delivery of a moving message. Audrey Tautou (Amélie) is just perfect. A fresh and gifted actress was needed and she complies divinely. This movie will be soon a bench mark. Worth a few tons of Prozac. Rated 10, without any hesitations.
Cruel Intentions (1999)
A bad film from a good script ?
Is it possible to make a bad film from a good script ? Not this time. Over centuries and through numerous adaptations, the novel by Choderlos de Laclos still works. OK, sometimes you are tempted to laugh a bit. But at the end it remains consistent. Good example of a universal theme fighting against time. Don't look too close and enjoy.
A Perfect Murder (1998)
Elaborated but well conducted.
Elaborated script but well conducted at a sustained pace. Actors performance is not outstanding but fits all right. Nevertheless special mention to G. Paltrow for her polylingual skill. The sets are superb. Good entertainment that keeps your breath away until the end. Rated 7.
L.A. Without a Map (1998)
Pleasant
Simple but appealing. Maybe not that original but fresh and entertaining. Actors look at ease in the script. The story is well balanced and always under control. Not ambitious but pleasant. Rated 7.
