Strike Back (2010)
Nicely Done Overall,But....
There is not much to add about the quality of the show and its acting that has not already been said and I agree that Shows 1 & 2 were a little too obvious, but 3 and 4 made up for it and I am looking forward to 5 and 6, with a Second season hopefully.
It's nice for a change to see an action show where the lead actor doesn't go for 10 minutes of a firefight without changing a magazine or just running out of rounds. Also, not invincible like ARNOLD and has a great sense of humour, such as what he says when he gets back into the jeep after "concealing" a knife in Episode 2, about "Being a bad time to f**t".
On the down side, his daughter would not know about the soldiers killed as that is simply not talked about. (This comes directly from the horses mouth). Also, using a Huey helicopter is the fastest way to advertise your presence for 20 or 30 miles in every direction as they are the loudest helicopter in the last 40 years. They have been out of military usage for quite some time, a Black Hawk or Pave Low would be far more realistic or even a Little Bird.
One of the problems for the North American audience is that some of the terminology is unknown, such as when Porter is told that he is lucky to have "beaten the clock" as this not only refers to completing the mission on time but getting out alive and not having your name engraved on a plaque on the clock tower back at base in England. Another is that Department 20 goes back to WW2 when it was a cover for espionage of various sorts, 20 being "XX" in Roman numerals, or "Double Cross"
One last comment about the Brits versus the Yanks, the British military does not give out the "I was too stupid or slow to duck" medal, ONLY the Americans do.
As far as other series go, the best one put out by American television was "Tour of Duty", at least that is what a bunch of us think.
The Unit: Freefall (2007)
While most episodes follow procedures correctly or at least reasonably, this episode has some extremely sloppy and dangerous practices in portions of the show.
This was a weak episode that was designed to take out a terrorist leader and some of his cell with a laser guided bomb. The bomb was to home in on the laser signal that Bob and his partner were to use to pinpoint the correct building for a single bomb. While training for high altitude jumping the team members go into a pressure chamber to orient themselves to the effect of oxygen deprivation if equipment does not work so that they will recognize it in themselves and others. The biggest flaw in this was that there is always a trainer inside with the trainees. This person is always been on supplemental Oxygen so that if there was any kind of emergency he could start helping the patient immediately! There was nobody inside except Bob and his teammate who died of a stroke before anyone could get inside. I also got a laugh out of the 40,000 foot jump, as there were mountains visible on the horizon at the same level as the jumpers almost as soon as they were out of the plane and since the highest mountain in the world is only 26,000 feet tall that was quite the blooper. That was more like the view that I would see when I jumped from 14-15,000 feet, not another 15-20,000 feet higher. They need to get someone to set these scenes up who actually know what they are doing, or better stock footage to use in it's place.
Starhunter: Hyperspace II (2004)
What the Heck??
As a season and series ender, this 2 parter made absolutely no sense, I would have given it a 0 for plot, but I like the characters.
Is there any intention of doing a third version?? I hope so, as I have enjoyed the adventures of the Tulip in both series, even when Travis in 2 looked nothing like in the first. No matter what, I will still watch any rerun that I know by heart and can even recite the dialogue before they do.
The biggest stretch of imagination is that supposedly 10 years have passed before Travis shows up on the Tulip, at least that is my interpretation from some of the script.
Who actually owns theTulip? In the first season, Rudolpho was the owner, then he came into money, which led to Percy owning it. In the second season, Rudolpho is back, but only as a crewman with Percy still the owner?? Who goes back to work for your previous flunky. I am not sure what caught me, but the unique approach to a series hooked me 100% and I love it!
