Daughter of the Wolf (2019)
Slow storyline that evolves into a rediculous plot at the end
Only thing this movie has going for it is the scenery. It starts slow and the storyline needs the first 25% of the movie to become clear. Some camera effects that tried to help the storyline evolve, are quite irritating e.g. The filter effect of having everything out of focus except the heroin's face as she reminisces about the past. It is so "in your face" that is actually distracts the viewer. I have difficulty in pinpointing this movie to a specific genre. At times it seems there is a supernatural element involved. The characters, most of whom suffered life threatening gunshot wounds, drownings, bites and falls, all miraculously returned o action with seemingly no lasting injuries. Very far fetched. My rating gradually declined from an initial 4 to just 1 at the end. If you are a realistic person, give this one a miss.
A Murderer Upstairs (2017)
Not sure why this film received a nomination in 2018
Poor acting, poor storyline and the cinematography isn't much better. It was nominated for a Leo Award in 2018 (Best Cinematography in a Television Movie) but actually, the filming in this movie was so "over the top trying to do it the right way" that it was distracting. Combine that with such an overly dramatic wardrobe choice for the lead female actor (Josie Davis) in comparison with the "missing" mother of the stepdaughter (Martha) and it becomes laughable. Don't waste time on this.
Shutter Island: Into the Lighthouse (2010)
Psychological thriller
Overall a very "dark" movie. Filming mostly in the dark (storms/night time) and "dark" subject matter definitely will not bring any sunshine to your day. If you have any medical/psychology background it may be interesting to watch. But I found some of the sets used to portray the storm/cliffs/nature so blatantly false that it distracted from the underlying theme of the movie. Subject matter can be compared to "One flew over the cuckoo's nest" but production and acting certainly not as good.
Lone Survivor (2013)
Not the greatest war film ever made
I give credit the another reviewer who coined the title above, in his review. And I agree. There are some very good aspects to this film such as the clips from recruitment process for special forces. This is an accurate portrayal of some activities when you go through selection for special forces. There are many more. And for someone not familiar with this, they may miss the importance of some of this but for me, it was enlightening to see some truth being portraid - even if just at the start of the movie. Other good points were the sound production and camera work on the stunt work (cliff jumps). And I did not mind Peter Gabriel's singing at the end. His voice was a good choice for closing. One of the better movies available on streaming right now.
Beyond the Reach (2014)
Storyline is highly unlikely in real life
Storyline is very far fetched. Can compare it to squeezing a fruit until it is ripe - it is never going to happen. This story, no matter how long you drag it out, is never going to happen in reality. If you are a fan of M Douglas and just want to look at him on screen, by all means go ahead and watch. But don't expect anything more from this movie.
Horizon Line (2020)
Don't waste your time on this one
Terrible story line, poor acting, implausible physical feats i.e. Getting out of an aircraft at flying speed and hanging onto the wing front edge with only one hand whilst filling the fuel tank with whiskey passed through the pilot's window. Anyone familiar with that part of the Indian Ocean knows that the "rescue" fishing boat would never be able to get that close to a floundering couple treading water for hours. Those exposed sand banks are well charted and are avoided by marine traffic. Can't believe someone spent good money on making this film. Nothing to see here - give it a pass.
Arctic (2018)
Boring
Movie is painfully slow. Dialogue virtually non-existant. Not really true to life. (aircraft parts and crash scenes look fake/staged). Beautiful scenery though. But the scenery is just as well suited to a documentary. Not worth your time.
Young Adult (2011)
Don't waste your time
No idea how this movie qualified for a Golden Globe nomination. Total waste of time watching this. It was more entertaining shovelling my driveway in blizzard temps and having my tears of laughter about the bad movie, freeze my eyelids shut.
