Lost Boys: The Tribe (2008)
Wait....It's a sequel?!
Just kidding. I knew exactly what I was getting into when I saw this movie. I even knew that it couldn't possibly measure up to the first one. Despite watching under that assumption, it was still disappointing. Perhaps I held onto some hope that it would be good and I'd have one other vampire movie to add to my collection. But no, not a chance.
the acting was bad. And I'm not even very good at picking up on/caring about cruddy acting. Most of the characters were pretty flat and definitely lacking in emotional expression. That being said, Corey Feldmen was awesome. If it weren't for his reprise as Edgar Frog this would have been a complete failure.
The story itself wasn't that bad, and the little jokes here and there referencing the old movie made me smile, but it almost felt like a completely different type of movie. Perhaps this is because of the crazy amount of blood and guts(compared to the first one).
One little thing that ticked me off was when one of the vampires quotes the movie The Warriors (he taps on the police dept. window and says "Warriors, come out to play-ay"). It just came out as really awkward....and I just don't understand why they used that reference. It bothers me.
It's a movie worth seeing, for the sake of completeness anyway. Edgar Frog will get you through it without too much grief.
Beauty and the Beast (1992)
Cute and sweet,, despite being cheaply made
I admit, I am a sucker for just about anything animated, especially if it happens to be based on a fairy tale. This movie, for all its technical failings has a charm unto itself. Sure its a simple and childish interpretation, but that is what its supposed to be. I honestly really liked the addition of the character Clara. She was really a kick. I know this was made for small children, but I thought that the design for the beast was more goofy than scary. They could have tried a little harder on that. Another thing that bothers me about a good chunk of the movies released by Good Times ent. is the soundtrack. It's distracting to have familiar classical music constantly playing in the background. This is one of the better Good Times films, and worth a watch for your little ones (or if you're an animation junkie like with an appreciation for the lower budgeted productions).
Rock & Rule (1983)
It could have been amazing
I was really excited to discover another Animated Canadian movie because let's face it; there isn't much besides Heavy Metal and Care Bears. Unfortunately this movie isn't what I would call top notch entertainment. It had tonnes of potential but just fell short. I found that I was rushed through a lot of scenes that whizzed by so quickly I wasn't sure what I was supposed to get out of it. A lot of the best lines in the film were downplayed in an attempt to keep up the pace. This also caused a problem in the initial setup of the characters. There wasn't enough time spent on developing the characters, especially Omar. I liked him, but I certainly had no idea what he was about. Mok at least was a great villain, with an actual personality and everything. Although his motivation for his evil plot isn't mentioned anywhere. Generally Villains have a reason for being up to no good.
The animation itself is really great. I enjoyed the silly and sometimes outright bizarre character designs. I especially liked Cinderella, although I spent a good deal of time thinking she would just fall over. there's a lot of weight to balance on those skinny legs. Sometimes however I found the movements of the characters to be stiff and lacking emotional expression (with the exception of the times they were high).
The music of the film really is a highlight. The songs are all awesome. I have a special soft spot for "My name is Mok" It's just so wonderfully narcissistic. My only problem is that I think it is in the wrong place of the movie. It should have been closer to the beginning, as it seems to me like a song that was meant to establish his character.
I felt that Rock and Rule had a lot going for it, but for whatever reasons it did not live up to it's potential. Technical gibberish aside, it is entertaining. So, if you're into 80's music and sci-fi movies, I would recommend watching this. Especially if you are an animation junkie like myself.
phew, sorry it was so long!
Heavy Metal (1981)
Sex, Drugs, and Rock and Roll
This movie was truly unusual for a North American production. Naked women everywhere! out of six female characters in the whole movie, only one of them manages to not flash her big cartoony breasts. I'm sure if I were a strait male I would be thrilled at the thought. I know the theory is that the female body has more artistic value then the male body, but how come I didn't see any penis? It's just not fair. I don't think anyone who enjoys this movie could complain about big-breasted Japanese school girls.
The other problem I had with this movie was the simple fact that the only story that was really important was the last one with the Defender. Don't get me wrong, some of the other stories were great (like the one with the druggie aliens)but they didn't seem important to understanding the evil of that green orb. I would have preferred if it had a more coherent plot.
On the plus side of things, The blood and gore was great. The soundtrack was awesome too. There was an interesting mix of horror, adventure, comedy and violence that was entertaining at least.
Happily Ever After (1989)
A good movie overshadowed by Disney's Classic
This was a fun movie when I was young. There were a lot of things I liked about this one, even if it is often considered a lousy film. One thing that really bothers me (and has bothered me since I was like 6 or something) is the prince. Who on earth could fall for that pansy! geez. The Dwarfelles are the most adorable magical pint-sized ladies ever (especially Moonbeam!). On it's own it's a pretty cool kid's movie. I liked the songs, even if some consider them lame. I recently popped it into the good ol' VCR to watch out of boredom and nostalgia. I sang along with every song. I could still remember all the words....
It's just when compared to the Disney movie it runs into problems. The movie varies too much from Disney to be considered a sequel, and most people forget that, and reject this film for that reason. If Disney had intended on a sequel they would have made one. It's cute and stuffed to bursting with morals! It is a bit on the cheesy side, but who doesn't like a little cheese?
