Zombies (2018)
Fever Dream Finale?
It's a good little romp with some good beats and songs until the 85 minute mark. Then you can clearly tell they had another hour of story to tell. So what do you do? Go on a weird fever dream like whirlwind that makes no sense. They jump from plot point to plot point with little to no real solution or reasoning.
Honestly I wish they had made a better choice. Cut half the love story build up to have a conclusion or simply ignore the cheer competition at the end. Instead you get a mash up of "Zombies are bad", "I should stand up", "REVOLT", "No don't.", "Okay cheer then", Cheer fail, "Everyone can cheer Zombies too", end of film. And it truly goes that fast with that little explanation.
Not sure I understand why they let that slide. But the 85 minutes leading up to it was a fun little romp of a time and worth the putting on and letting my 4 year old dance along.
The School for Good and Evil (2022)
Descendants but WAY better..
This is how modern fairy tales should be written!
Follows a similar idea of teenagers of famous fairy tales going to school. Two best friends are transfered to a magical realm and are dealing with their separations and expectations not being met. Evil and good being very defined and how in reality that is not the case. I don't want to dive into the details too much but I think there is something great about a fairy tale exposing that no person is all good or all evil.
It's made for teenage audiences but honestly watching as an adult I never felt it talked down to you. The visual effects are great, the story is compelling. I loved the choice in music, particularly for the giant big battle moment.
Love this and can't wait to see more. No idea why it has such a bad score.
Some parts might be scary for younger children.
Mickey Mouse Funhouse (2021)
Why?
Lacks the fun of the Mixed-Up Adventures and any learning that was in Clubhouse. It's a dulled down version of the new Mickey Mouse stuff for strictly younger audiences, but doesn't add any of the problem solving or secret learning from Clubhouse. So what was the point? To continue to isolate Mickey Mouse and friends from a wider audience?
The first episode tries to grab those who loved Roadsters with a superfluous ride and eollercoaster moment at the very beginning. And then the Hotdog dance and the upgraded theme are ruined my kid wasn't as interested in the show beginning. Then we have some convoluted reasons for our new friend Funny leaving behind all the great and interesting characters we developed in Hotdog Hills over the last 3 years.
But the worst absolute worst part is that stupid dance break music at the very end of the episode. If parents were indifferent to the rest If the episode that alone should ruin it for you.
