Firehouse Dog (2007)
Fun movie
If you watch this with kids, I bet they will say they like it, and isn't what this is all about? I guess I went in with low expectations. The previous review I read from someone on here sounded like an insane person. The acting was actually rather good. In fact, point a movie out to me where Bruce Greenwood WASN'T good. The guy is always terrific. And here he is back with his "Thirteen Days" costar Steven Culp. This is a long ways from "Thirteen Days", but it is a touching and nicely paced family movie, even at 111 minutes. The dog was great. I wish the kid wasn't so bitter in every movie he appears in, but oh well. Give this one a shot, but don't expect "E.T.".
Thank God You're Here (2007)
Shows Promise
Thank you Tracie Oakley for providing us a review with absolutely no substance. But wow...with that Alpo joke, maybe YOU should be on the show! I bet it would go over great.
Seriously, I watched this show once and chuckled quite a few times. Would you rather be watching "Will & Grace"? If so, then you probably would NOT like this show. It is a different type of humor...a BETTER type of humor. Sure, these are NOT masters of improv, but that's what makes it so unique. Watching them mess up is part of the fun. Those that do not see that are missing the point entirely. Kinsey was the only one who actually created a character for her bit, and it went over so-so with me because it seemed she was trying too hard. I also liked the video bits where they took the best parts from each of the guests and spliced them into one montage.
Also, props to the regulars on the show, who did an admirable job. This show definitely deserves to be on the air a little while longer, or at least as long as "Whose Line is it Anyway?"
Gigantic (A Tale of Two Johns) (2002)
Documentary? I think not!
Definition of documentary: A work, such as a film or television program, presenting political, social, or historical subject matter in a factual and informative manner and often consisting of actual news films or interviews accompanied by narration. The key word here is informative. I love They Might Be Giants, and barely learned a thing about them.
The interviews with all the celebrities were pretty much worthless. I don't care what Sarah Vowel thinks of anybody and Syd Straw was downright irritating. And is listening to people recite TMBG lyrics like they were supposed to be funny/interesting? It was neither. I think that was the problem: the movie spends time discussing TMBG's love for coffee. So what?? Millions of people love coffee. Was the presentation of the material funny? No! There were hints that both men are married, yet it was never discussed. And what about the solo material they did? What motivated them to do it? These type of questions are not addressed nor answered.
I could go on and on with the negatives. I did find the segment on Dial-a-Song very interesting. If you want to learn about They Might Be Giants, just buy a few CD's and listen. Seriously. This movie is a gigantic disappointment. I can't believe so many folks gave it a 10. Incredible.
Hearts in Atlantis (2001)
Bad Movie Masquerading as a Good One
I have never really liked Stephen King's books but found some of the movie adaptations to be enjoyable, especially "Misery" and "The Shawshank Redemption." Both of those were pretty short books (Shawshank being a short story). It's when his book tops 400 pages (which is usually always) that things go bad. But since I did not read the book, I will say no more about it.
This movie is plain dreadful. It tries to pull on the ole' heart strings with absolutely nothing. The kid does not act like an 11-year old (which is typical of King's stuff) and the dialogue is unreal. I rolled my eyes at least 5 times in this movie and almost turned it off about 3 times. I kept thinking it would get better, but it kept getting worse. Hopkins is totally wasted in a role that could have been quite good, like his portrayal of C.S. Lewis in "Shadowlands."
There is no suspense in the movie and it is really about nothing. Though the main child actor keeps talking about his frienship with his male friend, there is rarely a scene where they talk. It's just so predictable and "Kingish" that I can't figure out why people like it. Oh well. Watch at your own risk.
