The best thing since Pirates of the Carribean
11 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Just like POTC this is a historical fantasy setting with supernatural elements. It shouldn't work but it does and I loved it! It starts a bit cliche but I promise you it only got better with every episode!

All of the villains are extremely well rounded and three dimensional. Which I admit I wasn't expecting from Disney. I'm used to them turning out tripe for the sake of raking in more money (i.e. Live action reboots). But this is obviously a passion project because I can feel goe much love was put into this!

So many characters were so interesting that I had a hard time choosing a favorite one! Even the side characters were amazing! Not to mention the wonderful notes of LGBT!

Can't wait for season 2!

I LOVE horror/comedy but this was a miss...
24 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Horror comedy is my favorite genre so I was excited for this. These types of movies are always stupid but fun. However this one was a but *too* stupid. From the get go I could tell that the script and dialogue was subpar. Almost NONE of the actions or motivations of any of the characters make any real sense. Like WHY does her family hate her for killing the serial killer??? And WHY did the whole town turn evil in that alternate future?? And she DIDNT EVEN WISH THAT SHE WAS NEVE BORN!!! THAT WAS THE ENTIRE PREMISE AND SHE NEVER ACTALLY WISHED IT! You're left screaming at the screen because literally nothing is comprehendable even within the rules of the movie.

Also the ending leaves you confused as well because her family hated her before, but after she comes back from that alternate future everyone loves her?! Incredibly unbelievable and disappointing.

SPOILER FOR THE PLOT TWIST YOU'LL THANK ME
2 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This show was amazing from the start. I was incredibly invested and impressed. Unfortunately the plot twist is ridiculously stupid. Apparently everything was a simulation. Nothing that happened even mattered in the end because none of it was real.

Sci-fi shows set in modern times or the future are a dime a dozen. This faux period piece had true potential to be something extraordinary. But by revealing that it's actually 2099 and not 1899 it lost all originality.

I'm still rating a 6/10 because as I said it was highly enjoyable until it became clear what the twist was.

Save your time and look elsewhere.

Not a John Wick knockoff
27 May 2022
The majority of people who gave this movie a bad review did do because they thought it was a revenge story. Full of senseless fighting and killing. This is not that story. If you want John Wick go watch John Wick. This is a more nuanced story. It's character driven and requires patience.

It's okay...
25 November 2021
First off the main character is unlikeable. I wasn't rooting for him the entire show. He's not exactly a good person and came off as annoying.

Second, it took a LONG TIME for anything interesting to happen. The establishing backstory was very boring and very unnecessary. They could have told us everyone's stories in a couple of quick flashbacks and gone straight into the action!

Third, this is not an original concept. I've seen this type of social commentary done a thousand times in a thousand different ways.

Do yourself a favor and go watch Alice in Borderland. It's a much better show.

Love interest is a horrifying stalker
18 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Could have been good but the love interest of homophobic and a stalker. He literally spied on Julie Andrews while she was naked in the shower. NOT OKAY!!

People who say this is LGBT friendly cannot possibly be in the community. This was definitely a product of it's time. Insulting.

main character is extremely unlikable
18 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
It was boring to be honest. Also the "hero" rapes a mentally ill woman??? She was not in the right state of mind to give consent and he just throws himself on her without even asking. Utterly horrified. Cannot comprehend what would possess anyone to like something so souless.

Solid fun BUT...
23 May 2021
Stupid fun! This movie is turn off your brain just go with it type crazy!

However...

The ending didn't give the vieer much payoff. Emotionally or otherwise. Still, I liked it. And it had SO MUCH potential. Maybe if there's a sequel it will live up to the hype.

Contrived but interesting
21 January 2021
Plot holes abound but damn if the storyline isn't compelling. Just ignore how contrived it can be and you'll have a good time.

Also, little nitpick here, it feels as if the show has chosen the wrong main character. Clearly the most interesting person in the series is the Priest Manuel. With a dark past and plenty of secrets he's a solid type for the spotlight. But somehow he's the side character?? It's really weird. Makes the show feels off. Like I'm just watching a bunch a secondary characters try and carry the plot along while the main character just sits there and does nothing.

Anyway, still entertaining.

Prodigal Son (2019–2021)

Good for cheap thrills but look elsewhere for quality writing
18 January 2021
This show gave me epilepsy. Every flashback is short with intense bursts of light and there's at least ten of them every episode. It's INCREDIBLY annoying. It's also demeaning to think that I would need to see the Exact Same Flashback every five minutes or else I'll forget what happened. Which brings me to another point..

This show dumbs everything down for the audience. It assumes the viewer is stupid and needs everything spelled out. The writers have zero faith in their target audience and it shows.

Also the lead actor can be very over-the-top in his scenes. It's almost as if you can HEAR the director off screen telling Tom to use more obnoxious gestures/speak more loudly/make weird facial expressions. It comes off as goofy which clashes with the serious atmosphere the show is trying to go for.

The saving grace is Michael Sheen. He is fantastic in every scene. I won't deny this show has potential. Undoubtedly it's hard to resist such an interesting concept. A serial killer's son catching criminals? It was enough to pull me in. But unfortunately I need more than cheap gimmicks to keep me entertained. I like to be challenged or else I'm just bored.

All in all its okay for what it is. Not bad. But not great either. Hannibal did it better anyway.

Worst adult cartoon I've ever seen
25 August 2020
From Rick and Morty to South Park to The Simpsons I've seen a lot of adult shows. This is by far the worst. I enjoy vulgar shows and adult humor. But this is simply not funny. This is just disturbing and sad. I always thought Family Guy was the worst. Apparently I was wrong.

Pacing is horrendously fast
9 August 2020
An otherwise wonderful conclusion to the ToA trilogy is almost ruined by the pacing. The story and characters are all great but my god is it FAST! I had to take a breather after each episode! I felt like my head was spinning just to keep up with everything! It really shouldn't have been 10 episodes. Would have been better split up into two seasons.

Gay, straight, or asexual?
8 August 2020
The main character is struggling with whether they're gay or not because they don't like gay sex. In fact they don't like sex at all. This is literally the definition of what being asexual is. This movie was written by people who have no idea there are sexualities beyond bi, gay or straight. It was frustrating to see potential representation of asexuality get shoved into the shadows.

Good fun but a structural mess
29 June 2020
I've noticed that whenever a movie is foreign people tend to give amazing reviews whether or not it was actually a good film. Here is a real review from someone who doesn't give a 10 out to every non-Hollywood movie I see.

The characters are interesting and the action/plot gives off a fun cult vibe that made the movie enjoyable. However, the editing and structure was a complete mess. I hardly knew what it was I was supposed to focus on. And most of the characters are sadly one dimensional. The film doesn't give them any time for the viewer to get to know them past the king fu scenes.

If you want a happily ever after go watch the Disney version
30 May 2020
Everyone who gives this a bad rating just can't handle the level of violence and death in this film. I've read the reviews and it's obvious they're all just upset about a certain character dying.

I'd recommend this but be prepared because it's really sad.

It's okay...
28 May 2020
It is what it is for a kid's show. One dimensional characters with slapstick humor that you pretend to laugh at but it's not really funny at all.

After Trollhunters I was expecting the same outstanding depth of storytelling. Clearly something went wrong along the way.

The concept is amazing but the execution is flawed

Warning: Spoilers
(Contains minor spoilers)

Animation - 5/10 Character depth - 6/10 Dialogue - 5/10 Story - 10/10

The 3D animation is terrible. I don't know why all these shows are switching from 2d to 3D but there you have it.

The characters don't feel fully fleshed out. They aren't one dimensional by any means but there's something still lacking. For example the thing that aggravated me the most was the main antagonist Viren. I kept expecting more background. More insight into his character. But ended up never getting much more than "he wants power and is therefore evil." Even though he CLEARLY cared for the King he suddenly just...decides that he wants the crown?! Then wants to kill his sons? Out of nowhere? For no reason? It would have made so much more sense if *Someone had been whispering in Viren's ear from the start. It just doesn't make sense.

This show strikes me as too childish. The dialogue feels dumbed down which is frustrating because these are the exact same people who did Avatar. It reminded me of Trollhunters in a way. That show also leaned towards being too kiddish in its first few episodes. But in the end Trollhunters pulled itself together and came out really great! This show though? It never manages to be more than a good idea that was dumbed down for kids. For example the little dragon (when it hatches) acts like a dog. Yeah we get it. Cute animals that aren't dogs acting like dogs. Truly inspiring.

The potential behind this show is astounding despite it's problems. If you can look past the animation style and the cheap one liners it's got something good at it's heart. So in the end it's a solid 6 for me. It's good. But not great.

Favorite romcom ever!!
4 May 2020
I don't like boring movies like The Notebook or The Time Travelers Wife. I like something with a little spice. And this film has all that and more! I was laughing through most of it and when I wasn't I was admiring the adorable connection between the two main characters!

Good for mindless fun
2 May 2020
The plot is interesting enough but the characters themselves feel hollow. It makes for an entertaining action movie but don't expect any character development or the like.

It's a hit or miss with this one
10 May 2015
Let me break it down for you. If you're up for a realistic take on modern day heroes (think of a light-hearted version of Kick-Ass), then the first 7 episodes of this anime are a spectacular treat! But if you like over-the-top, clichéd battles and superheros then you're going to love the last half of this anime. If you like both types then you're probably going to love this show all around. But for those who don't BEWARE! If you hate unexpected plot turns that throw out originality for a steaming dollop of uncreative plot devices, then this is not the show for you (at least past ep 7 that is). If you're one who hates modern day setups and craves mindless action, then you're going to think the first half of this show is boring.

Either you love the beginning and hate where it ends up, or you hate the beginning and love the direction it takes. There is no inbetween.

First half: 8.5/10 Second half: 5/10 Overall: 6/10
