What a surprise!!
22 January 2024
This show was put on on a whim, and wow was I surprised at how engaging and fun it is. The voice talents are amazing (love Keith David and Alex Brightman, and who could argue against Stephanie Beatriz?), and the writing is great! I honestly was not expecting songs, which are really fun, and there are a lot of references to biblical lore, which I find fascinating.

It tackles a lot more issues than just sinning and redemption, and it has an interesting take on demons and the inner workings between different factions. I love the biblically accurate angel representations and attention to detail, and while I was initially skeptical of the animation style, I have grown to really like it.

Adorable

This is a cute movie, Melissa McCarthy shines as always, and the story is very sweet. I enjoyed the newer take on the genie lore, but if you go into this thinking they reinvented the wheel youllbe disappointed. It is funny, sweet, and a feel-good movie. If you're looking for something like that, then this is your movie. I enjoyed how they had the main protagonist, I felt his character was interesting and smart, and I liked that he didn't follow the usual tropes that go into these kinds of movies. Get your pizza from John's on Bleeker Street and settle in and just enjoy the movie, don't break it apart, just enjoy it for what it is: a feel-good Christmas story about family.

Very cute, glad to see an original story

Warning: Spoilers
It seems like right now everything is being "redone". This movie may not have the most original plot basics, but it is beautifully done and sweet. It follows along Ember as she discovers that maybe her anger problems are telling her more than she originally thought with the help of an unlikely new friend. The characters are unique and intriguing and develop nicely throughout the movie.

It is nice to see a movie look into and explore the idea that it is okay to have your own hopes and dreams. One of the parts that really stood out to me was when Wade was telling Ember that maybe her anger was her trying to tell herself something. It can be a difficult balance for kids who feel the burden of familial sacrifice, this movie touches on that in a beautiful way.

Not as bad as I heard

This is getting a lot of hate, but I didn't think it was that bad. That being said, I think there is room for improvement. I thought the acting was good, the story was interesting and the effects were good.

Fun and unique

I enjoyed the anime, but I also enjoyed this show! I thought it really came into its own in episode 3. The actors were great (love Ein) and I loved the noir style. It is beautifully shot. Watch this for itself, don't compare it to the anime because they made changes. That being said, I don't think the changes are bad, they move the story and add character development.

Interesting and unexpected

Warning: Spoilers
This is a subtle movie, and definitely a psychological thriller. I enjoyed it, I'm not much for horror movies that rely on jump scares, and this had very few of them. I enjoyed the subtle storyline and aspects of innocence versus denial and love versus hate. I need to rewatch it, because I missed the triangle thing, but I really enjoyed the mirror aspect of the movie and the subtleties of the characters.

I have seen this many times, it still scares and shocks me

I am not one to usually write reviews, but I had to on this movie. Book adaptations scare me, as most directors and writers are not quite able to capture the spirit the book held. I think that is why this movie is something different to me.

First off, this is not a movie that requires a lot of back story, you are taking a journey with the characters, and you develop bonds with them feeling like you are there watching over their shoulder, almost as a character yourself.

The acting... the acting is above reproach. Not going to give anything away, but I can't find a single actor who did a sub-par performance. Marcia Gay Harden and Sam Witwer are two actors whose performances truly stood out to me, and of course you have the Walking Dead's Laurie Holden, Melissa McBride and Jeffery DeMunn working side by side with the Punisher's Thomas Jane.

And, of course, without revealing anything, the ending. The infamous ending. I love the ending in how it compliments the feeling of the story, but I can't watch it. It is so well done, and so wonderful in how it brings a finality to the story, but I always stop the movie right before. That being said, it is most worth watching, quite simply for the pure brilliance of it.

This movie tests boundaries, and pushes limits and is most definitely worth a viewing.
