Better Call Saul (2015)
What a smart "presquel"!
Lovers of Breaking Bad will love this one. A prequel and sequel - is this the first ever "presquel" - to Breaking Bad focusing on the life of Jimi McGill, better known as Saul Goodman, the lawyer of Walter White, the main character of Breaking Bad. Overall, great character development. Great cinematography. Great soundtrack. Great dialogues. Great acting. Most if not all of the central characters of Breaking Bad appear; even Walter White and Jessie Pinkman. The only downside: it all ends after the fifth season. The final conclusion, a very believable one, leaves Breaking Bad fans longing for more. Could this really be the end of the franchise?
Bird Box (2018)
Why the hype?
Finally watched this movie on Netflix. Recall there was a lot of hype around the movie when it was released. But why? It is a good production, great camera work, and ok to good acting, especially Sandra Bullock, but the plot is just too thin. Why does happen what happens? What's behind it? How does "it" operate the way it does? Sadly there are no answers. Answers are not necessarily needed, see The Shining, but one requires something instead. Here is nothing. Even the end makes you feel empty. 5/10
Calibre (2018)
An ok movie
I watched this movie on Netflix. I was looking for a drama under two hours and this movie popped up. Not knowing anything about it, I checked and after seeing all the positive reviews I watched it.
Given these reviews I was disappointed. It is ok a movie, but very slow and quiet for a drama. While capturing the Scottish mood very well (I lived in Scotland for three years), I was expecting more tension, suspense, or thrills. The 'incident' that is at the heart of the story feels constructed and is unconvincing. While what follows works, this artificiality makes the whole movie unconvincing.
