Gewalten (2022)
A movie that takes itself time
It was so refreshing seeing a movie where there's not a cut every other second. The mesmerizing sound design and astonishing cinematography that capture the cold and violent world protagonist Daniel lives in made me almost not realize that there was not a single piece of music throughout the whole movie. If you are up to slow paced films, this will be the one for you. At some points, they really could have shortened or left out a few scenes. Although a length of 120 minutes could have made the movie even better, it is still never boring and the tension buildup was done very nicely. There is very little dialogue, but when there is, it often feels unnaturally which made me not believe that these characters are actual people. The whole atmosphere can be compared to the Netflix show Dark, and the similarities are sometimes a little bit too obvious, but as a whole cinematic piece I really enjoyed the movie and it left an impact on me!
Dark (2017)
Pure art in every way - with a few deficits
As a German I can proudly say that this is not just the best series Germany every released, but also one of the best I've ever seen in general. Pretty much everything has already been said about "Dark". Its cinematography, music, actors and high complex plot is absolutely astonishing. We don't have to talk about the casting, cause no one can deny that it's easily one of the most authentic and detailed casting in film history. There are still two aspects that I did not really enjoy as the plot went on.
I absolutely loved the mysterious atmosphere and all the secrets that were established in the first season. In my opinion, this atmosphere couldn't be recreated after season one. Don't get me wrong, I totally enjoyed what was going on until the last minute of the show. But at some point in season 2, I felt like no plot twist could shock me anymore because anything could happen. Finally, in the 2nd half of season 3, it didn't really matter anymore who was dead and who was alive, because characters existed multiple times in multiple realities etc. Although it was very complex, I never lost track of what was going on, but I felt like in season 3 they only tried to serve the answers we've all been waiting for and as I said before: Literally nothing surprised me anymore.
The second thing no one seems to care about are the dialogues. Although I really adore the series, I wish the writers would've written more diverse dialogues. In season 3, I felt like most of the conversations were so frustrating, because the characters didn't communicate at all and just repeated the same pseudo-deep sentences again and again. Especially main protagonists like Jonas/Martha/Adam/Eve/Claudia literally said the same in every scene which was really exhausting. I mean, when everything was revealed in the end, it wasn't as mysterious as every character pretended it to be the whole time.
All in all, I believe that "Dark" set a whole new standard for TV shows in many ways and that it will take a long time to top its complexity and well worked out structure from the beginning to the end. It's neither just a crime or thriller, nor just a sci-fi or a mystery series. Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese have created a modern saga which is pure art in every way.
