The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon (2023)
The Last of Us + Resident Evil = Daryl Dixon
I am a fan of The Walking Dead universe (comic and tv), and when Daryl was introduced in the show, I didn't care for him at first, but he eventually became one of my favorite characters. His relationship with Carol in the original Walking Dead was beautiful. With all that being said, I preferred Dead City over Daryl Dixon, it kept my interest and attention a lot more.
Daryl ends up in France because he met some bad people. He comes across a Monastery where he meets this woman and child. Apparently this child is the new Messiah because he was born with the virus but wasn't affected by it. Daryl then has to take this boy across the country, while battling the typical bad guys in typical scenarios, because this kid will save the people (The Last of Us). The evil lady and her goons are trying to create super zombies so she can have her own army and rule France or the world? (Resident Evil). I'm not entirely sure, this season left a lot of unanswered questions and explained very little.
Don't expect spectacular character development either. It is incredibly lacking and what little you get is nothing surprising. Again, it's the same people doing the same things in the same environment, like we've seen many, many times before.
I love Daryl don't get me wrong, but this story was awful, a little convoluted and flat out boring. The only episode I actually enjoyed was the second one with the children. I had to force myself to finish the rest of the season. It's like how I had to force myself to finish The Walking Dead from season seven on. Everything is becoming a wash, rinse and repeat cycle and it's unfortunate.
Ahsoka (2023)
I Will Forever Love Ahsoka
I adored Ahsoka from the moment I met her in the Clone Wars animated movie. I was super excited when she first appeared live action in Mando. When I heard she was getting her own show, I was beyond thrilled. Watching the evolution of one of my all time favorite Star Wars characters go from animation to live action is very exhilarating.
After watching the complete first season, I am left wanting more. Eight episodes isn't enough, it needed at least ten to twelve.
I am a big fan of the Clone Wars and Rebels animated series, so it made me very happy to see these characters again in live action. Episode 5 was absolutely mind blowing out of them all. Ahsoka's eyes when she has the red saber, *chills.* The flashbacks of the Clone Wars were handled so brilliantly, though a bit more Rex would have been better. Also, Chopper is still the best droid ever. I love his messed up personality immensely. I was hoping Zeb would show up, but maybe he will in season two.
I appreciate the direction the show went in and was quite pleased with how it ended. That being said, we better get a season two because there are a few questions left unanswered.
Some reviews are complaining about the pace of the show, but I found it flowed perfectly. Mandalorian and Book of Boba Fett both started off with a slower pace. Yet, they are two of the best shows. Even Obi-Wan was a bit slow at times, but managed to keep me captivated. Andor is probably the slowest of them all.
Ahsoka is perfect and I didn't feel let down by the choice of actors, acting, story, pace, action or CGI. I thoroughly appreciate this show even more, because the story picked up where Rebels left off, except many years later.
For those that have watched the Rebels series, even Clone Wars, you will have a much better understanding about what's going on. If you haven't, I still recommend watching Ahsoka. Maybe add Rebels to the watch list, it's worth it.
Twisted Metal (2023)
I Had Doubts, But I Was Left Wanting More
I haven't played Twisted Metal, only Carmageddon despite being a huge gamer, but this was a fun series to binge. After watching it, I wanted to play the games. It had humour, great acting, and a decent plot. I was hoping for more car races, crashes, and explosions, but I still enjoyed the action that was given. Also, the CGI was decent and wasn't overly used like most stuff nowadays.
I'm not a huge fan of Anthony Mackie, but I did enjoy this character and thought he played John perfectly. I'm a big fan of Stephanie Beatriz and she didn't let me down with her character Quiet. Loved her and want more. Joe Seanoa and Will Arnett as Sweet Tooth was something I wasn't sure how it would work out. With one voicing and the other doing physical comedy it did though, surprisingly well. Sweet Tooth was awesome and one of my fave characters.
I really hope this gets more seasons because that cliffhanger at the end has me wanting more. Season 2 sounds like the first game and exactly what I thought I was going to see. I recommended watching if you are a fan of movies like Mad Max and Death Race.
The Last of Us (2023)
Needs More Infected
I am a huge fan of the games they are one of my all-time favourites to play. I was worried about how this would turn out. I am generally not a fan of movies/TV series that are adapted from video games. However, when I saw that Drunkmann was involved in the creation, I knew it would be handled with care and love, and pay its respects to the game.
The cast is incredible, each actor was perfectly picked for their character. Pedro is the perfect Joey and Bella is a brilliant Ellie. You can tell every actor cares about this show and the script, and are giving it their all. Having Ashley Johnson who voiced Ellie in the game, as Ellie's mom Anna was a smart casting choice. I thought Bella and Ashley were related in real life because they look and sound so much a like, but they aren't.
The story was already to my satisfaction so I knew I didn't have anything to worry about there. What I was worried about was if they would completely disregard the original resource material, but they didn't. I appreciate getting more back story on the virus itself and some on characters like Bill and Frank. Episode 7 was pretty much the DLC that was released for the first game, which is Ellie's back story. Episode 8 was pretty much chapter 9 of the game minus the Clickers and Bloater, which disappointed me. The finale was the last 2 chapters of the game plus the epilogue.
For the most part it's playing out exactly like the game with the same scenes or close too, and word for word dialogue. I loved that they brought in the joke book and comics, that pleased the inner gamer in me. That was a fun part of the game when Ellie would bust out the joke book. I am grateful for the little details from the game, like the yellow paint by the ladder, my brain automatically thought to hit the triangle button. There are many easter eggs in this show that gamers will have fun finding.
I do have one issue, not enough Clickers or other infected. When I first saw the Bloater, I got goosebumps and squeed like a little girl, then it walked away with the hive of Clickers and we haven't seen it since. Also, there are a few episodes where nothing really happens, little action and a lot of dialogue. I really hope future seasons incorporate more infected and action. I will say, minus the lack of infected in later episodes, this is pure perfection. I hope future game adaptations take note and follow suit.
Dragon Age: Absolution (2022)
Dragon Age - A Dark and Dangerous Place
I was hooked the moment I started watching. I would watch more seasons. I've played the games in the past, so I was excited about this.
I love this style of animation. At first glance, it may look like it's for children, but it definitely is not. This was made for adults.
I thought the characters were great. I liked most of them from the minute I was introduced. The voice acting was decent, but it could have been better in certain scenes. The character development was also a bit weak, but the writers only had 6 episodes each roughly 25 minutes. If more seasons are dropped, hopefully we will get back story on other characters.
The story itself is good. It was something I had seen before, but it still had twists and kept me engaged. I'm a sucker for these kinds of adventures with fun characters. There is also a decent amount of humor with strong action scenes.
Anyone who has played the Dragon Age games will have a better understanding of the world and history.
Wednesday (2022)
Strange, Deranged Wednesday Addams
As someone who grow up and adores the Addams Family, this was an interesting concept. It's not the most amazing thing I've seen, but it's not terribly awful either.
I was happy when I saw Christina Ricci was in this, she is always great. I enjoyed her character. Jenna Ortega was awesome as Wednesday, she understood the assignment and nailed it. A+
Catherine Zeta-Jones as Morticia, no this was not a good choice at all even with her only in two episodes. Luis Guzman as Gomez, why? Again this was NOT a smart casting decision. There was zero chemistry between these two, it was just weird and awkward to watch. They felt so out of place compared to the rest of cast.
Thing was a delight as per usual. He has always been my favourite character. I enjoy his updated look. Christopher Lloyd will always be my number one Fester, but Fred Armisen was still decent. The rest of the cast did a good job and played their characters well.
At times, it doesn't have the same feel as other Tim Burton classics. The reason for this is because some episodes are not directed by Burton. However, the episodes with Tim, you can absolutely tell it's him. The CGI was good but not spectacular. The story was interesting and humorous. I was laughing at Wednesday's statements quite often. Also, the dance scene was epic!
The soundtrack is fun and definitely feels more like Tim Burton. One of my favourite scenes was when Wednesday played Paint it Black on the cello. I love the cello and had goosebumps, it was so beautiful to listen to.
I rate this 8/10. It was worth watching, I didn't feel like I wasted my time. It left me wanting more. It is geared more towards teens, but adults like myself will enjoy it too. I would gladly watch a second season. My only desire is that if this does get a second season, that they cast different actors to play Morticia and Gomez.
The Dragon Prince (2018)
Heartfelt and Beautifully Crafted ~ Season 1 - 4
Dragon Prince is created by the same wonderful people that made Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra, two incredibly amazing shows that I have a lot of love for. I was super excited when I first heard about this new creation being released on Netflix.
Everything about this series is spectacular. The story, the humor, the action, the characters, the dragons, the pace of each episode/season, the mystery, the magic, the animation, the voice actors and the soundtrack. Each season is 9 episodes, 25- 33 mins in length, which is too short in my opinion. Before you know it, your finished and left wanting more.
I love this series so much that I rewatch it eveytime from season one when a new season is released. There is so much depth and beauty to this story and characters that one enjoys the ride every time. I am grateful it is getting at least seven seasons, and truly hope it continues on after. I highly recommend that everyone watches this amazing piece of art.
Inside Man (2022)
"How does anyone ever get murdered? There's so much admin!"
This is a straight up quirky series. It's not meant to be taken seriously. It's only four episodes, each an hour long.
The story is bonkers, but in a fantastic way. I have watched other shows with ridiculous plots that weren't as good, funny, and heartfelt at times. Honestly, the story is a scenario that I could see happening in real life, because real life is just that seriously messed up, and so are human beings. Also, when I saw Steven Moffat was involved, I was even more excited because I knew I was going to be entertained.
I love David Tennant, which is why I started watching it in the first place. He definitely lived up to my expectations that I knew he would. I thought Stanley Tucci was a nice touch. He is a phenomenal actor and always a delight to see. I really enjoyed his character, it looked like he had fun playing this role. I thought that everyone's acting was solid. The cast selection was perfectly picked, no one felt out of place.
I don't understand some of these low rating reviews. I guess those reviewers don't have the same twisted sense of humor I do to enjoy this type of crime-comedy genre. I was laughing out loud quite often. I personally thought this was brilliantly created and brought to life. I would absolutely welcome and watch a second season.
Hocus Pocus 2 (2022)
Let The Witching Hour Begin Part 2
I am a huge fan of the original film. I remember seeing it in the theater with my family as a kid. The first movie will always hold a special place in my heart, but this sequel still satisfied my inner child almost 30 years later.
I was laughing and giggling the whole entire time, jumped at one part, and even teared up at the end. It was delightful to see the Sanderson Sisters up to their old tricks again, and being their quirky selves. Bette, Kathy and Sarah picked up right where they left off without skipping a beat. It was also wonderful to see Billy again, and nice to hear him speak more this time around. I also enjoyed the three main girls as well, I thought their acting was solid. Izzy had me chuckling often. Cobweb the cat needed a bigger role, but I understand they didn't want to be too much like the first. The musical performances were good, but will never be as good as I Put A Spell On You from the first.
As for the story, it did repeat the first movie's plot point of the sisters trying to get eternal youth before sunrise, however it managed to weave itself into it's own individual story in the end. I also enjoyed all the different tie-ins and callbacks to the original film. The backstory about the sisters at the beginning was a welcomed touch. The child actor playing Winnie did such a good job, she nailed the role. I couldn't stop laughing at her. I could watch an entire movie about the sisters origin story with those specific child actors. I was entertained from start to finish.
I recommend giving this a watch regardless if you have seen the first one or not. Though if you haven't seen the original, please do yourself a favour and go watch it immediately. Both movies are great for adults and children. Thank you Disney for a satisfying sequel.
P.s. There's a post credit scene!
Altered Carbon (2018)
Goes From Stellar to Yawn Fest
Season One - The story was absolutely incredible. I had to binge because I was so hooked and needed to know the ending right away. The actors are phenomenal and provided outstanding performances. I
was invested in these characters regardless if they were hero or villain. Poe was my favourite character. The cinematography was beautiful and captivating. Also, the directing was some of the best I've seen from a tv show in awhile. It was just so much fun to watch that I binged it again before starting season two.
Season Two - What a let down after the incredible high from season one. The story is outright boring. I lost interest and started watching something else by episode 5. It took me forever to finish because I just didn't care about what was happening or the characters anymore. It did have decent acting with decent actors. There were a few charaters from season one like Poe, thankfully, in here. The cinematography was plain and like everything else I've seen over and over. The same goes with the directing. It was missing that special touch season one had. I couldn't get into this season and I had to force myself to finish it.
I recommend season one and stopping there. You'll just be wasting your time with season two. The 8 stars are for season one though it was 10, but that's season two's fault for losing 2.
Oats Studios (2017)
Black Mirror With A Dash Of Love, Death & Robots
For being an independent studio the quality of CGI/animation is actually decent. It didn't make me cringe looking at it. The acting was good. It had a few famous people, but for the most part unknown actors. Some stories were moronic and tried to hard, others were solid story telling with inconclusive endings. All in all, this felt like a wannabe Black Mirror and Love, Death & Robots mash up.
The Sandman (2022)
The Sandman Beautifully Brought To Life
As someone who's read the graphic novels and absolutely loved them, this was a fantastic adaptation. Neil Gaiman had his hand in this, so I viewed it as his second chance to adjust things that he may not have been content with in the comics. Also, it's an adaptation, it's meant to be divergent from the original material.
It's no different then when Robert Kirkman changed things in the The Walking Dead show, that he wished he'd done differently in the graphic novels. Example, Robert didn't like that he had Rick lose his left hand early on in the comic, so in the show Rick badly injuries it instead of having it chopped off. Carol was annoying in the comics but a total freaking badass in the show. Etc, etc.
The cast is perfectly picked in my opinion. Everyone did a phenomenal job personifying each character. Tom Sturridge was amazing as Dream, he nailed this performance. The actor portraying Desire looked and acted exactly like the Desire in the novels. Yes Death was black instead of white, so what? She was beautiful and embodied Death's personality flawlessly. Lucifer is played by a woman, again so what? Tilda Swinton played Gabriel in Constantine and if I remember correctly everyone thought that was brilliant, including myself. Speaking of Constantine, it's Joanna instead of John. Lucienne is a black female, instead of a white male. The Corinthian had a much larger part than in the graphic novels. It was nice to see this character be given more depth and development. Things are allowed to change and be different from the original resource material. Change is a good thing, it keeps things fresh, new and exciting.
For the most part, this adaptation was pretty much the graphic novels. I love Neil Gaiman's work and appreciated this adaptation, and how he brought it to life. The CGI was on par and beautiful to look at. The story was pretty much the same story from the comics, again with some changes. At times, certain episodes can be a bit of a slow burn, but so could the graphic novels. Neil has been approached many times about making a live action Sandman over the years. He finally has the chance to give Morpheus and the Dreamland the proper respect when doing live action. I will definitely continue to watch if more seasons are dropped. Releasing the bonus episode a little after the series was launched was a nice touch Netflix!
Yasuke (2021)
Missed Opportunity
I love the animation, it's one of my favourite styles. It was visually a fun time with bloody fight scenes.
The story however, could have been way better. The writer literally had all the resource material right in front of them, and didn't use it. Instead of telling the historical aspect of the first black samurai, it was about Yasuke and Saki, a little girl with powers. A mutant preacher that covets her powers so he hires a band of magical mercenaries to hunt her down. Then by episode four it's a Daimyo witch from the ancient times and her minions with the same agenda. Don't get me wrong, I love magic and fantasy stuff but it wasn't necessary here. It also had the miniscule amount of character development.
Why? Why do this? Season one should have been the origin story about the first black samurai. That's the story I wanted to see. Season two could have been about him and Saki. Honestly, with a different writer this could have been amazing. It's not terrible, but it's not the greatest thing either. Watch at your own discretion.
Arcane: League of Legends (2021)
Made For Adults
When I first put this on I wasn't sure what to expect. I love fantasy, magic, steampunk and video games, though I haven't played League of Legends. I couldn't get through the first episode. After awhile I decided to give this another shot as I was on an anime binge. I am so glad I did. This is definitely not a kids show, and I had no clue because I didn't read any reviews. I only remember the trailer and was like, "oooh, that looks fun."
The animation took a moment for me to adjust to, but once I did I fell in love with it. The blending of different animation styles is handled so smoothly. It's an artistic style with it's own touch of magic, that you can't help but appreciate it.
The story is so well structured and beautifully written, and accompanied by a great sound track. Every episode proceeded to get better and better. It's a dark and gritty atmosphere that still manages to have a good sense of humor. The characters have depth that made me adore each one regardless if they were bad or good. The voice acting is top tier with the perfect actor portraying each character.
I understand the rave reviews and awards. This masterpiece earned them. I absolutely want more seasons and hope we get more. Netflix, please allow this beautiful piece of art to flourish.
Day Shift (2022)
Code 101: Bloody Good Time
This was a great vampire action comedy. I like vampires so I was hoping this would be good as it can be hit or miss with the vampire genre. Honestly, I only watched this because of Snoop Dog.
The CGI was very well done, the soundtrack was good and the cast was well picked. Their acting was solid, which allowed me to enjoy the characters. I mean Snoop Dog was still Snoop Dog but with a cowboy hat. He also had a short role but was still a badass. I'm not a big fan of Jamie Foxx, but I really enjoyed him in this. It was funny throughout with entertaining action sequences. The story was simple and one you've seen many times before, but written well enough for me to stay enthralled.
If you are looking for something fun to watch that doesn't take itself too seriously, I think you'll enjoy this. I certainly did.
Dota: Dragon's Blood (2021)
Incredible! More Seasons Please!
If Netlfix keeps making incredible shows like this one I will keep my account. I have watched all three seasons now, and all I can say is I loved everything.
The story is so compelling that it kept me intrigued the whole time. You pay attention because the plot is so well structured you don't want to miss a single detail.
I absolutely adore the characters and their development, along with the voice actors that went with them. The perfect actors were picked and did a phenomenal job.
Lastly the animation was solid. I would get goosebumps every time I saw a dragon. The detail was so incredibly beautiful. I definitely prefer this style of anime over others. Though, season one did have a few too many still shots for my liking. However, season two and three had much less, which I was extremely greatful for.
I binged all three seasons within three days. This is an anime I will watch many times over. I really hope this gets a few more seasons. I never played the game but want to now. If you love fantasy and dragons as much as I do, I recommend giving this a watch. You won't be wasting your time or disappointed.
The Batman (2022)
Younger Batman
I personally think most reviews are low and slam the film because a wide variety of people, and fans were expecting a more experienced and finessed Batman. This Batman hasn't been in the game for too long so he is still fresh and learning. It also makes sense to me why he isn't fully jacked and hardcore ripped. It makes sense why he doesn't have such a high tech suit, batmobile or a lot of gadgets, yet. Bruce hasn't fully formed into Batman, and that is how director Reeves wanted it.
I, like many others, was skeptical about Pattinson playing Bruce/Batman, but he actually did an amazing job in my opinion. It's like when I judged Ledger for playing the Joker, which later became one of my top three Jokers. Kravitz was great as Selina/Catwoman as she looked and embodied the character well. Farrell did a fantastic job as Penguin and props to the make artists for really making him look good. Dano was a creepy, twisted Riddler and I liked it. Wright did a good job portraying Gordon, and Serkis was alright as Alfred.
I love Batman and thoroughly enjoy crime dramas and documentaries, so it was nice to see Batman be the world's greatest detective in a different style and atmosphere. The backstories for some characters are different, and I found that to be refreshing. I enjoyed the plot and didn't find it to be convoluted. It was more engaging for me as a Batman fan to see a different world, a different story and a slightly different Bruce/Batman.
I can understand the mix reviews, and how it won't be a film for everyone, but I personally enjoyed everything about it. I would gladly accept a sequel or trilogy. It's not perfect, but was still a fun and engaging watch regardless of the length. I was hoping it would exceed my expectations and be worth adding to my DC movies/tv series collection. I wasn't disappointed.
What If...? (2021)
What If...I Love It And Need More?
Season one is absolutely 10 out of 10. I love the animation and different multiverse timeline stories. How it all comes together in the end is pure brilliance. I had to rewatch it again before season two. Dr. Strange's episode is very emotional and so well written. It's my favourite one hands down. My next faves would be the first episode with Captain Carter, the zombie one and the last two with Ultron. However, I appreciated each episode for their humour, brilliance, underlining meanings and symbolism.
Now that season two is out I have to say I think I loved it more than season one. I was glad they went back to season one and cleaned up stories on certain characters like Gamora. Also, I was thankful they finished the Captain Carter and Hydra Stomper story. Captain Carter is awesome and I enjoyed that episode immensely. It was hard picking favourites this time around as I really appreciated all of them. However, that being said, the introduction of Kahhori in episode six was incredible and definitely my fave. That story was so touching and beautiful. I love how it was done it a native and Spanish language. I absolutely want to see more of this character in the future. My next faves would be the three with Captain Carter, Hela and the Ten Rings, Happy saving Christmas.
This is such a great show and I hope it gets many more seasons in the future because I'm a huge fan.
Travelers (2016)
At least 2 More Seasons Needed
I finally gave this a watch after being out for awhile and I...WANT...MORE!!! This shouldn't have stopped at 3 seasons. Give us more Netflix!
It predicted our flu-like pandemic, and this show only aired from 2016 - 2018.
Unbelievable (2019)
Need More Like This!
I will keep paying for Netflix if they keep making amazing material like this, well done! Incredible from start to finish. Everything about this mini series is perfect! Toni Collette (love her) and Merritt Wever are brilliant together. I wouldn't say no to a second season. Only took me two days to complete. Highly recommend watching.
