Cloverfield (2008)
unappealing and predictable...
I found this movie very boring and unappealing, but everyone is raving about how amazing this film is. I have to say I usually find IMDb quite accurate, usually I agree with ratings, but as it stands right now the movie is at an 8.1... 8.1!?!?!? This suggests it is one of the best films of all time (by IMDb standard), which I feel is absolutely untrue. By these ratings this film is better than Scarface, Kill Bill vol. 2, Snatch, Trainspotting, and Patton just to name a few. I can't help but find that absurder.
Anyways, enough ranting, on to the film...
The lack of a narrative really hinders the experience of this film. There is never a clear distinction about what is going on; things just randomly happen, the characters get scared, they move on. Nothing seems to have an effect, they cower for a few seconds (or feel depressed) then they are over it and moving on. Any scenes which could have been used to convey serious emotion happen so quickly you never have a chance to really feel what the characters are feeling. As well the action is so quick you never really know whats going on, and like a teenagers first time having sex its over before you know it. The shaky camera also adds to the lack of intensity, often you just see blurs or quick glimpses of the action then its over. You are often left asking "what just happened?" A huge problem I have is that so many things happened in such a short period of time with no explanation as to why they happened. You don't know why that one girl blows up after being bit (I disliked the characters so much I can't even remember their names lol), you don't even know if they really kill the monster in the end! I need character development, I need a plot with originality (not another lame love story), I need surprises (this movie had none, ie. in the tunnel when they turn the night vision on...you know what I'm talking about...if you didn't see that coming you shouldn't watch movies). I simply can not recommend this film, in fact I found it boring and lacking in engaging qualities. This movie is below average at best: 4/10.
Bob Saget: That Ain't Right (2007)
...really?...
This stand up is terrible, I think I chuckled twice to myself...barely. It seemed like he didn't even rehearse; he just kept swearing about nothing. His warnings to a audience member about not having sex with animals was awful and dragged on for way to long. Also the jokes about girls complaining about their cell phone service wasn't even close to being funny; why does he think its funny to have sex with his daughters friends? Bob Saget could quite possibly be the worst stand up comedian I have ever seen. I couldn't even believe that people were laughing, I was so confused, I couldn't tell what they thought was funny. Avoid this at all costs, I give it a 1/10...no, you know what I give this a zero, biggest waste of time ever. Again, avoid at all costs.
Herushingu (2001)
solid anime
This show is probably one of my fav animes. The characters are really cool and the voice acting is done really well. The animation is great and so is the artwork. As well it has a really great soundtrack with some really cool sound effects.
I don't know if I'd say this show is of the horror genre more than an action/adventure... but I did watch this with a few girls who were really creeped out by some of the facial expressions... especially the scene in the final episode with Alucard on the roof right after he killed Incognito. Overall this is a really well done anime series and I recommend any fans of this series to check out the manga...9/10.
Transformers (2007)
lots of fun...
I just saw this movie last night, and as a transformers fan, I gotta say I really enjoyed the film. It was funny, the action was great, and its cars turning into giant robots fighting all over cities reeking all sorts of mayhem. Today, however, I was reading some reviews that were pointing out all these continuity errors and what not, and I started to think "yea... those errors did happen." But still, I had a great time with this film and if your gonna hate a movie because of some continuity errors and some minor holes in the story (specifically the disappearance of barricade, and I'm not talking about after the battle with bumble bee, cause some people were complaining how he was destroyed... maybe he just got damaged and recovered later on...it could happen). Any ways lots of fun, lots of laughs, this film should be seen on the big screen with the surround sound kickin' for sure. 7/10
Avatar: The Last Airbender (2005)
Great...especially for a children's cartoon
This show is great, especially for a cartoon show. The show revolves around Anng, who is both the last airbender and the avatar. Anng and his friends journey around their world to train Anng in the 4 arts of bending. Each form of bending is based on a different form of marshal art. The movements from the different fighting style are reflected in how the different benders bend their specific element. The research is a nice added touch and definitely gives this show its own unique feel.
The story line is great too with some genuinely funny parts mixed in with some powerful and moving dramatic sequences. I'm a huge fan of cartoons and this is defiantly one of the best out there. If you love cartoon shows this is a definite must see. I give it 5 airbenders...out of 5.
300 (2006)
Stop all the hating...and enjoy 300
Wow I really can't believe how lopsided all these reviews are, either people hate it or people love it. There seems to be almost no one who is in the middle on this one. It's a shame however, that most of the negative reviews all focus on the same few things. Yes it's true that there were some ugly representations of Persian soldiers in this movie, but if you're going to make a movie that is about a comic book, you're going to have to stay true to that book. Also to just clear some things up a lot of the monsters and the freaky looking beast were not actually from Persia...*whisper* they were just part of the Persian army. You know, from countries conquered by Persia. I thought Xerxes looked pretty normal...tall too, and he was actually Persian. Haha come to think of it, I read a review that said it was OK that the Persians looked like monster in the comic but they should have been more sensitive in the movie. According to that review he wouldn't mind racism in comic books...but his movies he will not stand for it. Really quite funny actually.
Also a lot of people are complaining about there being to much post production. Is that actually a bad thing? I thought the movie looked beautiful, that scene where the Spartans are looking at the tree with all the bodies covering it, that was a stunning display of the beauty that is post production(and it was a tree with dead bodies nailed to it lol). Actually I thought the whole movie had this very beautiful stylized look.
As well why are people complaining about how the Spartans looked? I read a review where a guy said they looked like chip'n'dales dancers. I can't seem to find out why people think there is something wrong with the Spartans actually looking like well defined warriors. If you would stop being so mesmerized by their abs, you would realize that "Hey they all look the same...same size same shape, and you can't really see any veins...why do they all look like this?". Well young Skywalker, that would be due to the insane work out routine the actors were put on. Everyone trained to be smooth and defined. They were all molded to look identical, like what a real warrior would look like. They were suppose to look like soldiers that could get together in a group of say, oh I dunno 300, and go fight a massive invading army all on their own. So you know *whisper* they might need too look like they were in pretty good shape.
About the story line and the minimal character development. The thing about the minimal character development is that all of the Spartans were essentially the same. They were trained to be the ultimate warriors. They were told to go into a battle which would probably mean their death, and that was cool with them. There was nothing else to think about but their glorious death in battle. Only one character really matter: Leonidas. Leo was the man who had to make all the decisions, and the decisions were pretty simple: go into battle, fight, and maybe die. End of story.
Bottom line this movie looks great, it sounds great, it has great action sequences, and some really powerful moments. Plus Gerard B as Leonidas was perfect. When that man was yelling at his troops, you actually believe he wants them to do something. (I mean I almost jumped out of my seat it was so powerful). Don't be fooled by the haters of CG animation. Don't be swayed by the sensitive people who want you to think that because the bad guys look scary that you shouldn't see this movie. It was great, even my girlfriend liked it which was definitely weird cause I thought girls might be turned off by all the fighting and blood and dead bodies and what not. So yea go see it...now...NOW! Why are you still here reading reviews about a movie that you should be watching? Go...hurry before its too late...oh great now you missed it. Way ta go.
Click (2006)
not bad but predictable
When going in to this movie I definitely expected it to be one of those comedies where the protagonist finds something that seems to improve his life, but turns out that it makes it worse. In the end the hero learns a valuable life lesson and is a better person for it. Surprise surprise that is what the movie was. The idea of the universal remote was a decent one, but it seemed to be just another gimmick for an overdone concept. Sandler does a good job as usual playing the funny goof, but I found his comedy was unnecessary for the overall concept of the movie. Basically you could have used any actor to fill the hero roll and the movie would have still felt the same.
Overall some funny parts with a predictable ending, 6 out of 10
