Letters from Baghdad (2016)
Incredible Woman
And a great documentary about her. The period photos and movies are astonishing and well presented. Nicole Kidman played her. But this is authentic. Tilda Swinton's narration as Gertrude Bell Is perfect.
Shazam! (2019)
"Big" meetS Superman
The theft of Captain Marvel for a chick flick left the writers free to play with the real character. But Billy Batson was a crippled newsboy who, after saying the magic word, had to fly around the Pillars of Hercules to become Captain Marvel. In this case, the magic word should be"14" his age. It's a parody, fer chrissakes. Not to be taken too seriously. Not that good an action movie. Mediocre CGI.
Ferdinand (2017)
Classic Disney
Critics of the animation have no sense of the art. The story is pure schmatlz. A great flick for kids. Totally a family movie. I give it a nine only because tens are rare and this fantasy flick needs a higher rating. The naysayers are wrong.
Robin Hood (2018)
Anachronism City
There are so many errors in the first 20 minutes that it would take just as long to describe them. The writer should never attempt another historical script. Perhaps not even as far back last week. Same goes for the costumer. And the set decorator who thought the belching flames of the Industrial Revolution were appropriate. I thought the Costner version was ridiculous. This elevates that to high art. Avoid at all cost.
Aniara (2018)
Terrible Science
Most of what happens here is impossible. The 21 restaurants, for example, have a two-year supply of food for a three-week journey. Their reactors are destroyed but they never lose Power. Plus they are all Swedish and Sweden's aerospace program is notable deficient in building cities in space. There is no outside maintenance. "Silent Spring" meets "Silent Running" this is not. Look on this work and despair.
Queen of Outer Space (1958)
Totally Camp
"Silly" is insufficient to describe this terrible but fascinating flicker from 1958. You must suspend all concern with reality, good movie making, literate scripts and B movies. This is a C For Camp. Do not watch this expecting good SciFi. I say "fascinating" because you will wonder with every frame how it got to be made. This is likely ZsaZsa's acting at her best. It's an insult to women. And to anyone with a brain. Still, it's a a visual treat, if you like pretty girls.
