Ah-ga-ssi (2016)
Awestruck!
I'm still getting into Korean films and trying to watch more, but seriously holy s***. I was not prepared for how amazing this was.
Everything about it was so mesmerizing! My heart is still racing as I write this. No exaggeration when I say this is one of the best films I've ever watched.
La llorona (2019)
Haunting
My mother came to Canada as a refugee fleeing the Guatemalan civil war where the genocide depicted in this film took place. Never in my life have I actually watched any film or documentary that portray the stories, atrocities and horrors that were a result of the genocide. It is still hard for my mother to talk about the war, so being able to actually watch something that portrayed what happened during this era really was monumental for me.
Most of us kids to Latino parents were told the folk tale of La Llorana to get us to go bed or not wander off or she would come get you. The film effortlessly weaves the folk tale within this specific political set, thus giving us an alternate version of the origin story for La Llorna. The plot is slow, but haunting and eerie as the film progresses. I loved how there were parallels made between the original folk tale and the story in the film, yet at the same bringing to light the reality of the genocide.
This isn't your traditional horror film, not one where you're going to get jump scares or anything. But the background behind the genocide itself is what it is scary and they do a great job with the lighting and sound to build up the ominous tone. I'm grateful there is beginning to be more representation of indigenous people from Latin America in films. So this really was special for me to watch, a way to connect to my own roots and my mother's own origin story.
Yangguang puzhao (2019)
Amazing
A Sun is probably one of the best films I've watched these last few months. I have never watched a Taiwanese film, and am in awe how this one was made. The cinematography was just *chefs kiss*. Also, how simple the script was but how the actors delivered flawlessly. A must watch!
The Dig (2021)
Terrific!
I'm a sucker for period pieces and this one has all the elements that just take your breath away. Beautiful cinematography and fantastic performances from the leads bring it all together. Thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it.
Ma Rainey's Black Bottom (2020)
Performances
The performances by both Boseman and Davis are clearly the highlight here. Truly heartbreaking that this was Chadwick's last performance, just imagine what else we could have seen from him. Besides the acting, the story was slow and didn't really go anywhere. Set and costumes were also something worth mentioning. Would have liked to see more scenes with music.
Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)
Huge letdown
Like most people I would have to agree in saying that this was a disappointment. Not comparable at all to the first movie. Corny dialogue, predictable plotline, and disappointing performances from the lead actors.
