Six-Five Special (1958)
Fantastic or Terrible. It all depends...
As a historical piece showcasing a transitional phase in UK culture and popular music, the rise of youth culture and the early days of television, this film is fantastic. It offers a snapshot of the late 50's that was a battleground where Jazz, rock and roll, crooners and skiffle were battling for prominence in the youth music market of a pre Beatles universe. However, if you approach the film for sophisticated entertainment judged against current day standards you will be sorely disappointed. Terrible and cheesy...
So choose your critical position. I took the former point of view and thought the whole experience was brilliant...
Peterloo (2018)
Dull
I was so looking forward to this movie. I've rarely been so disappointed by a film in my life. Given the gripping and terrifying narrative of the Peterloo Massacre, how anyone, particularly someone as talented as Mike Leigh, could deliver something as tedious and unedifying as this movie beggars belief. Wooden, one dimensional characters whose only purpose was to spout polemic and a script that was embarrassingly dire. This is a shame because there are many excellent actors here, but who clearly lost their sense of descrimination when offered a role in Peterloo. I have lost two and a half hours of my life watching this abomination that I will never get back. If you are planning to watch this film I fear you will do the same. Do yourself a favour and go out for a pizza instead.
