Rick and Morty: Edge of Tomorty: Rick Die Rickpeat (2019)
Great concept, Great execution
The synopsis is that Morty uses a newly discovered "death crystal" to make him die with his crush Jessica while Rick struggles to get back into his body after he is killed by Morty.
The death crystal plot with Morty had an extremely creative concept and had many unexpected yet comedic plot twists and elements. Definitely, my favourite part of this was seeing Morty say his judge's last words of her husband. At that point, I didn't even know where the plot was going to go, and that's what I like the most about this show.
The plot with Rick trying to get into his own body was still funny as ever. My favourite scene was when he first entered the fascist universe and when he used the Meeseks box to kill fascist Morty. I like how they are introducing new concepts while still staying true to the show's original source material.
Overall, this was one of my favourite episodes ever and I hope the creators keep up the good work.
South Park: Christmas Snow (2019)
Come on, we're going for a sleigh ride!
The synopsis is that Santa gets rid of alcohol to prevent drunk driving, and the town tries to get Randy to bring back Tegridy Farms.
So in the end, we only got 3 non-Tegridy Farms episodes this season. I was honestly really disappointed by this. I am also disappointed that they stuck the classic theme song without instead of making a new one as they did for every other episode this season.
Now about the actual episode. I like both commentaries about comparing Santa's speech to those of Greta Thunberg as well as Randy's speech on how you can't reuse old ideas and put a different name on it. Hypocritically, I noticed that the structure of this episode worked a lot like the season 19 episode "Naughty Ninjas". The mayor needs the help of an old friend who committed crimes, they end up failing, the mayor gets mad at them, you get the point. However, the scenes I did laugh at the most were the "Let's go driving" montage with Andy Willaims Jingle Bells. My family listened to his Christmas songs every year when I was a kid, I so laughed like heck when I watched this scene. The other scene I laughed so hard at was the montage of Randy legalizing cocaine.
Some things I didn't like about the episode was how there was no side plot. Every other episode this season had a side plot so this just felt out of the ordinary. I also really wanted to see the Underpants Gnomes when I heard them speak since they haven't made an appearance since season 6 but they just never showed up.
Overall, "Christmas Snow" was a mediocre season finale of an alright season. I thought the first half of the season was flawed but it got better during the second half. I hope Matt and Trey can make a better season in season 24.
South Park: Basic Cable (2019)
Still a better love story than Twilight
The synopsis is that Scott Malkinson and the rest of the boys fight over who gets to be with the new girl at their school. While Scott Malkinson's dad tries to take down every streaming service in town.
Yet another classic episode that doesn't rely on story arcs! The new intro is just as good as all of the other new ones this season. Unlike what the show usually does, this episode focuses on a background character named Scott Malkinson. Before this episode, the only jokes he gave in his little screen time was that he had a lisp and diabetes, heck, the episode even makes fun of that near the end (in which I even cried at). And now we see that Scott is really likeable and has more personality beyond his illnesses. He gets in a relationship with Sophie Grey, the new girl and it's already more interesting than Cartman and Heidi. I found it hilarious how everyone in the school, even the goth kids and Timmy wants to hit her up. Overall, Scott Malkinson is a great addition to the cast and I hope that Matt and Trey will put him in more episodes.
The second plot about Scott's dad taking down streaming services was just as good as the first one. I liked the joke of how the cable men waste their time while they're getting to someone's house. But most of all, I liked the seemingly creative yet immaturely offensive TV shows. Crab People was an amazing comeback from season 7, The Sister where a funny recreation of Terrance and Phillip and The Whites and the Blacks was the only time I ever laughed at the Whites! I also liked the whole message of streaming services taking over traditional cable. I was aware of this issue long before this episode but now with Disney+, AppleTV+ and HBO Max to name a few, it was clear that South Park had to make fun of this issue. Overall, this was needed to make the episode feel like modern South Park.
South Park: Turd Burglars (2019)
Yet another classic South Park Episode
The synopsis is that Sheila Broklovski gets a fecal transplant to cure her disease which leads to Stan, Cartman and Kenny try to steal feces from her and Tom Brady. And Kyle becoming a germaphobe.
This is the first episode this season to really feel like classic South Park, definitely better than last week's episode. The new intro is really creative, this is 3rd new intro they have made this season and if they make new intros for the next 2 episodes of this season, I'm honestly ok with that.
The main plot with Shelia's fecal transplant is interesting yet kind of disgusting. Before watching this episode, I didn't even know what a fecal transplant was. I thought they were making the whole thing up until I Googled it (They're no graphic images). This enhances the episode because similar to last week's episode, it is tackling recent issues that don't get represented in the media. I really like that about this show because it makes me more vocal about these kinds of issues in the real world (Not necessarily disgusting ones like fecal transplants). This was the plot that really affected me the most.
The second plot is where Stan, Cartman and Kenny try to steal Sheila's feces to get a copy of Jedi: Fallen Order. It was extremely nostalgic to see the boys do crazy things together. I like how Kenny plays a major role in this plot since he is one of the least focused characters of the modern seasons. This plot was definitely the best part of this episode.
The plot with Kyle becoming a germophobe was fairly odd but an alright c plot. I really wasn't disgusted by it because I learned what germs were in Kindergarten. I like how the animators really went creative with the animation in the scene where Kyle releases that his microbiomes are a part of him and starts to get superpowers. This reminds me of when Kyle gains superpowers after he questions his existence in "The Tooth Fairy's Tats 2000".
Overall, Turd Burglars is by far my second favourite episode this season (1st is Let Them Eat Goo) hopefully Matt and Trey will continue to make episodes like these.
South Park: Board Girls (2019)
Doesn't quite feel like classic South Park
The synopsis is that Vice Principal Strong Woman faces a new transgender opponent at the Strong Women's Competition, while the children have to deal with girls entering their board game club.
Alright, Tegridy Farms is over, but now we have Babies? Don't get me wrong but the reason I hated the Tegridy Farms plots were that they were in every episode this season and I couldn't avoid them. So now when Matt and Trey listen to the fans and end Tegridy Farms, they just replace it with Babies and expect everything to go back to normal. The Babies plots were always the most boring plots of season 22 and when the plots do contribute to the timeline of the series, I would be horrible to see the second half of this season passed all on the Babies. Hopefully, they will discontinue these plots and get back to classic South Park.
Anyways, Strong Women is getting beaten by her ex-boyfriend at the Strong Women competitions who now identifies as a woman. This was an alright plot. I liked seeing a portrayal of how people abusing transgenderism, which isn't explored in the media much, even transgenderism itself isn't explored in the media that much. In addition, I like seeing character development from Principal. I liked how he went from being a huge activist to pushing Heather and learning that he isn't he thought he was. Also, Heather Swanson as a character is a well-written character with a hilarious face and I like how Cartman joined him in the end by only using a one-liner.
The B plot with the board game was alright and was the only thing that made this episode feel somewhat like classic South Park. I liked seeing how the boys are falling into the same issues that Principal and Strong Women are facing. But this plot just doesn't have the charm that classic South Park had.
Overall, "Board Girls" is a meh episode that doesn't quite feel like classic South Park.
South Park: Season Finale (2019)
Oh Jeez
The synopsis is that Randy goes into custody for all of his crimes on Tegridy Farms while the White's complain about their dead child.
After 6 episodes, we are finally seeing the end of Tegridy Farms. Well... Exactly not. However, that was the only reason I really liked the Tegridy Farms plot. I always had hope that the show would end the Tegridy Farms plots because they are getting old but I will most likely have to wait until the end of the season. However, I did like the scene where Randy battles his marijuana addiction in prison rehab and confront guilty in prison. I just love how he is learning from all of the mistakes he's made, which we really don't see much of in this show.
The B plot about the White's is what REALLY brings this episode down to a 6. The B plot in season 21 about the Whites was very stale and I didn't even smile when it was brought up. This episode was even worse. It was actually painful for me to sit through the funeral scene with all the crying from Mrs. White and listen to all of their rants about how no one listens to them for the entire episode!
The part I did like from this episode was seeing Mexican Joker himself, I kind of predicted they would make a real Mexican Joker from the start, but it was still good to see it in action.
But Overall, "Season Finale" felt a lot more like a build-up newer episode than an actual episode. It also felt more like an episode from season 20-21 (The dark ages of modern South Park in my opinion) than an episode from this season. It is by way the worst episode in this season so far. Hopefully, South Park will discontinue this way of storytelling and move on to something more creative and episodic.
South Park: Tegridy Farms Halloween Special (2019)
Could have been better.
The synopsis is that Shelly tries to ruin Randy's Tegridy Farms Halloween special, while Butters releases a mummy that terrorizes the town.
I really enjoy South Park's Halloween specials, the episodes Pinkeye, Korn's Groovy Pirate Ghost Mystery and The Scoots were my favourite episodes of the seasons they were in. This episode, however, was noticeably worse than those episodes but was overall okay.
The Tegridy Farm plot in this episode was stale at the beginning (As with every other Tegridy plot) but starts to have some good qualities near the end. Shelly is by far my least favourite character, she treats nearly every character like a jerk and my least favourite episodes of the old seasons (An Elephant Makes Love to a Pig, Cat Orgy) were both episodes were she got a major role! But I actually liked her in this episode because she was providing points against Randy (Who I think is unlikeable in this season) that made a lot of sense. Near the end of the episode, I really enjoyed how they brought back Winnie the Pooh and the Dead Cows and the Invasion of the Body Snatchers references. The ending is what made this episode feel like an episode from season 22 which is a good thing.
As for the plot with Butters and the mummy. I was not good. The story felt really cliche and quite predictable. This was supposed to be the true Halloween plot of the episode, but it didn't have the creative charm as Pinkeye, Korn's Groovy Pirate Ghost Mystery or the Scoots did.
Overall, Tegridy Farms Halloween Special is an ok episode but it could have been improved.
South Park: Let Them Eat Goo (2019)
Best episode this season so far
The synopsis is that Randy creates the new plant-based "Tegridy Burger" while Cartman blames the new cafeteria menu for his heart attacks.
I don't usually enjoy the Tegridy Farms plots, but their plot in this episode was extremely humorous. Unlike their other plots this season it was very funny and it actually related to the B plot of the episode. I liked how the Farm was portrayed as an actual farm and not as a joke where the only joke is Randy yelling "TEGRIDY!"
The B plot with Cartman, in my opinion, was just as funny and if not better than the Tegridy Farms plot. I especially liked the overall message of how no matter what type of meat you're eating, whether it's meat or plant-based, it is still being processed and made in a factory. I really like how this show is making me more aware of issues like these, because they make me more vocal in the real world.
Overall, "Let Them Eat Goo" is hands down the best episode this season so far, and hopefully there will be more episodes like it this season.
South Park: Shots!!! (2019)
An alright 300th episode
In this episode, the synopsis is that Randy celebrates the $300 000 milestones of Tegridy Farms and Cartman refuses to get his vaccine.
I have said this every time, but the Tegridy Farms plots are getting very old. I really don't find it funny anymore when Randy says "Tegridy!". In addition, the show making references to the show itself is also getting old The only exception was Randy's vulgar comment about the Chinese government. I just love how the show doesn't even care that China banned it!
The $300 000 plot felt more like an excuse not to make this a special episode than an actual plot. However, it got more interesting when Towelie and Mrs. Cartman started getting involved.
The side plot with Cartman not wanting to get vaccinated was surprisingly funny. First of all, the idea that Cartman never got vaccinated was hilarious and was very similar to him having anxiety in the last season. The best scene was most likely seeing Cartman move his mom out of his house and the entire roundup scene. But mostly, unlike most episodes this season, this episode ended in somewhat of a cliffhanger. I don't know if they bring it back or not, but I sure hope they will.
Overall, "Shots" is an alright South Park episode but is good enough for the 300th episode.
South Park: Band in China (2019)
More Tegridy than last week
The synopsis is that Randy flies to China in an attempt to make Tegridy Farms make more money and Stan forms a band in which he and his friends get to film a biopic.
The first plot where Randy goes to China is funny but does have some flaws. I thought the fact that Winnie The Pooh and Piglet where in jail because the show is banned in China was hilarious and was probably my favourite part of the episode. I almost lost it when Pooh said his iconic line "Do you have any honey?" in Prison.
I loved it when they brought back old characters in the last season, so my favourite part was when they brought back Mickey Mouse. I love how they have always portrayed Mickey as an overlord. And his appearance in this episode is just as good as he ever was.
As for what I didn't like about this plot. The Chinese Prison was a pretty bad scene since we already saw a detention center in the last episode, it felt extremely repetitive for them to put Randy in prison in this episode. Also, other than the fact that Kenny was in Stan's band, he had no lines and the episode wouldn't be any different without him.
Overall, "Banned in China" is a good South Park episode with little but some flaws. I can't wait to see what Matt and Trey to next for the 300th episode.
South Park: Mexican Joker (2019)
True Tegridy
I thought season 22 was an overly good season and definitely the best the show has done in a few years. This season premiere seems promising for another season just as good with some flaws.
In this premiere, the synopsis is that Randy, still owning Tegridy Farms realizes that the residents of the town are growing their own weed. Meanwhile, Kyle and Cartman get send to an ICE detention center.
The new theme song at the beginning is very clever and I hope they use it more often this season. The main plot with Randy releasing that people are growing their weed felt really stale and hopefully, they will discontinue the plots with Tegridy Farms in future episodes. However, they will most likely not and It will probably start follow the same structure as Cartman and Heidi's abusive relationship in seasons 20 and 21. I also was not a fan of how Randy blew up all of the personal weed farms. I know Randy has done some pretty insane things over the years, but committing mass murder just felt so out of character for him. What I did like were the two references comparing Stan's speech to Greta Thunberg's "How can they sit there and look a child in the face and say it's fine for people to grow there own weed?" and Towelie referencing how Matt and Trey wanted to cancel the show many times but ended up continuing it.
The B plot where Kyle and Cartman got sent to detention centers was much more interesting and there was nothing that I necessarily hate about it. I especially liked the Joker references and how easily convinced the guards where that Mexican Joker was real. I can't wait to see what happens next to Kyle and Cartman, who are still in the detention center, in the next episode.
One thing I didn't like about the episode overall, was that Kenny got literally no screentime. I liked when he got an episode last year in which he played a main role. I really hope he appears in future epsidoes more often.
Overall, "Mexican Joker" is an alright South Park episode with some funny humour but can still be made better. I am looking forward to see what Matt and Trey have next in-store.
