Cade: The Tortured Crossing (2023)
An instant classic
This film is a masterpiece. Hands down one of the most heartwarming and yet heartbreaking films I have ever seen. There is so much depth to this film that it blows me away. The story is something to behold, and Neils' portrayal of Cade and Kale are just phenomenal! I literally cried during the ending scene. Neil Breen has absolutely done it again! The cinematography is amazing, the locations are out of this world, I truly felt as if I was in that mental institution and in that castle! The character development was also something to behold. This film has it all, romance, action, drama, and even the supernatural! To me this tops even the likes of Citizen Kane or The Godfather. It had me laughing, crying, and I was on the edge of my seat with suspense throughout it's entirety. If there's one movie you see from 2023 it has GOT TO BE this one.
Talk to Me (2022)
Don't buy the hype. This is not a good movie.
This movie was frustrating, to say the very least. I went in with already low expectations and it was actually worse than I thought it would be. The characters are all brainless. The plot is so SO bad and these things drag this movie down tremendously. While there are a few scenes that are genuinely creepy it gets bogged down by how bad everything else is. None of it makes sense. Why are teenagers completely unphased by these supernatural things that are happening around them in the beginning?? They're just totally cool with possession? Even to the point where its a humorous parlor trick? No. This makes zero sense and isn't how real life would work if all of these supernatural things were real. That in particular completely ruined this movie for me. The hype built up and the scores at the present time are not representive of how "good" this movie is. Don't buy into the hype. This was trash.
The Act of Killing (2012)
A total waste of time
While I (sort of) get what this film is trying to achieve, it fails in every way. This is barely even a documentary, just a bunch of doofus former assassins (without an acting bone in their body & with no budget) running around trying to slap together a campy horror movie. I learned absolutely nothing from watching what I thought would be an informative documentary. If there's any positive takeaway of watching this it's that I now find myself wanting to seek out the actual facts and stories about what happened. There are maybe two or three scenes that were worth watching in this but the rest of it was completely purposeless. Don't waste your time.
Delicatessen (1991)
Not very good.
Maybe its because I'm not French or maybe its because I just don't like goofy French movies but I could not get into this. As a fan of City of Lost Children I figured this would be great, but it wasn't... Some of the humor I got (like the woman continuously trying to commit suicide but repetitively failing), but most of it went right over my head. I can see why there is a cult following for this movie but it just was not for me. Way too artsy and not enough substance in my opinion. There is so much going on in this movie at any given moment its also really hard to follow. By the third act I was just dying for it to end. Perhaps I just don't get it and out of ignorance I can't enjoy it, but either way I don't think I would recommend this to anyone. This was kind of a sad experience for me, because I wanted to like this so much, but couldn't bring myself to.
The Rachel Divide (2018)
Just wow
I enjoyed a lot of this documentary and I think that its great that the filmmaker let the critics have their say, but that just wasn't enough for me to like the film as a whole. Its bias on her behalf and in my opinion Rachel is doing a lot of damage to her own life and the lives of her family. Its irresponsible. I wouldn't even be all that irritated by all of this if she wasn't so brazen and unapologetic in her interviews and tv spots. But the way that she conducts herself and the attitude that she has is just appalling. Especially when you consider her lies and deceit. I think that there's a good reason why she's shunned by practically all of the African American community. She is completely full of herself and couldn't just let all of this go. She just HAD to hop on social media, do tv Interviews, write a book etc. Etc. It all just feels so wrong. Although I don't think that she should be tortured for the rest of her life with hateful vitriol, I do think that she deserves all of the criticism that has come her way. I feel like this movie could have been done in a less biased manner and served the exact same purpose. Overall it's worth a watch but if the filmmaker set out to make Rachel look good they have failed spectacularly.
Idi i smotri (1985)
This is an instant classic.
I don't think I have ever seen a film that has impacted me the way that this film has. I avoided this movie for almost a decade due to the subject matter, but I almost instantly regretted that upon starting it. There are so many war films that attempt to do what this does and they usually fail in my opinion. They seem disingenuous or just uninteresting. This is flawless in it's execution. Its incredibly realistic and it achieves what it strives to do. It's artistically filmed, but never comes off as pretentious. The atmosphere is great and the young actor who plays the main character is fantastic. I would say that he carries this film. By the end of it I just felt shattered and shaken and not many films have that effect on me. There are several scenes in this that are just soul crushing and at times pretty hard to watch but if you have the stomach for it I would highly recommend this.
Darkon (2006)
An absolutely amazing film
As someone who has been steeped in a lot of fantasy role playing games, films, music and other similar types of media all of my life this is an incredible experience. I can see why there are people who find this mediocre, but to me its one of the best documentaries I have ever seen. Yes, there are quite a few moments that are laughable, and it does get a bit silly, but in my opinion its one of the highlights. It has a big heart and the people who made it and are in it are passionate about what they are doing and to me that is admirable. The overwhelming feeling that I get when watching this is a feeling of inspiration, inspiration to not take life so seriously and to not be ashamed of being a "geek". I love this so much and have watched it many times. If you love documentaries or if fantasy is a genre that you are interested in I would highly recommend this.
Outlast (2013)
The holy grail of horror games.
This has got to be one of the scariest games ever made. I adore horror video games and have played more than my fair share and nothing has even come close to being as horrifying and hard to play as this one. Back when I first discovered it I could not believe how intense it was and to this day it still holds up. So after starting and restarting it over and over again, I finally beat it. I tried so many times to get through it, but would always end up getting to a point where I didn't know what to do and/or I would just quit out of absolute terror. After finally getting through it I have to say that I am totally glad that I did, and very impressed with it. Amazing story, stellar soundtrack, chilling atmosphere, original characters and storyline and a fantastic ending. There just isn't much to complain about here. Other than the many close call heart attacks. This is, without a doubt, one of the best horror games of all time. I love this game and highly recommend it.
May (2002)
A pretty great film
I first seen this movie on IFC back when that was a thing (not really sure if it is anymore) and it blew me away. With it being about a woman who is an outcast it really resonated with me instantly and I could not look away. So recently I added to my watch later list and got to it last night, and I must say I that I was slightly disappointed by it the second go round'. Although it holds up incredibly well for three fourths of it, towards the end of it I got really let down. I am a massive horror movie buff so I went into this really expecting something gory and shocking. And as it has some slightly gory scenes in it and no doubt is at times shocking, I feel like it never quite lives up to its potential. The finale is done in a sort of artsy and super elegant type of way that I did not like at all. I felt like (at least) towards the end it should have spiraled out of control a bit more than it did. With all of that being said, I would still highly recommend this to anyone whose into horror movies, and especially psychological thrillers. Very much worth a watch.
Resurrect Dead: The Mystery of the Toynbee Tiles (2011)
A must see for any documentary lover
I can't count how many times I have watched this. It has got to be one of the best documentaries I have ever seen in my life. From beginning to end it absolutely captivates me and there aren't many movies or documentaries that do it like this one does. It is just thrilling. The mystery in this (which never truly gets solved) is one of the most intriguing aspects of it and it never lets up. It is very well made in every way. The soundtrack is phenomenal, it has an amazing atmosphere that's inescapable, it has an array of incredibly interesting characters that we get to know, there is also a few scenes with some pretty interesting hand drawn art that's incorporated throughout. I cannot recommend this enough. If you are into street art, treasure hunts, mysteries, or just documentaries in general you HAVE to watch this.
Alléluia (2014)
Doesn't quite deliver
I stumbled across this movie without knowing much about it, only that it was supposed to be disturbing. In that regard it most definitely disappointed me, but I still found it worth watching. There were a few death scenes, and some other halfway disturbing shots, but nothing to write home about as far as shocking goes. The premise is fairly interesting and the style of the movie is spot on, I enjoyed the characters quite a bit and the soundtrack was fantastic, but it felt like it was missing something to me. It's hard to put my finger on it, but it left me kind of wanting more, and it just never truly delivered the way I thought it should. Still worth the watch I would say.
Melancholie der Engel (2009)
Not for the feint of heart
Last night I had the pleasure/displeasure of viewing Melancholie Der Engel and let me tell you it was disturbing. For the first 45 minutes to an hour I felt sad, sick, shocked. But after about the hour mark I felt desensitized to it and actually (as I'm sort of ashamed to say) started to enjoy it. One of the most sickening and twisted films I have ever sat through. But it was kind of worth it. I would not recommend this to anyone (aside from those who enjoy shock movies). This is probably the second most disturbing movie I have ever seen, only underneath Banned In America. Official rating: 6/10.
Málmhaus (2013)
Not what I expected, but i didn't know what to expect
I went into this movie completely blind. Had seen advertisements for it for quite some time and have always wanted to see it. I had heard good things about it as well. For the first twenty minutes or so I felt like it was something I was not going to be into at all and for the most part I was right about that. There really isn't a lot of metal things or metal scenes in this film, although it seems to be the main theme of it. There are quite a few nods to some bands and towards the end the metal theme starts to intensify, but (in my opinion) it was not metal enough for the title of the movie to be called Metalhead. I enjoyed some parts of this movie, but for the most part found it to be very boring and lacking in substance. Its okay, kind of good sometimes, but certainly not great.
The Lion King (2019)
Great little movie
A great little movie. I went into this with very low expectations, but was surprised at the quality. The first half falls a bit short, but the second half, I would say, makes up for it. It sticks pretty close to the original in tone and dialogue. Although there is some ad lib in this, which falls flat, its not a huge problem. The soundtrack is amazing and the songs are alright I guess. As distracted as I found myself at times with the new animation, it looks amazing. Overall definitely worth a watch.
