Actors: LisaRaye, Lark Voorhies, N'Bushe Wright, Mos Def, Monica Calhoun, Clifton Powell, Mc Lyte

1st off Much Love & Props 2 Neema Barnette 1 the Guru(s) of the underground Directors! I've found a much deeper connection with her work after I viewed the DVD with her commentary... I love both Mc Lyte's & N'Bushe Wright's Dispositions period, so they're my rationale for supporting Civil Brand! Mc Lyte gets slept on as an Actress & Rappers as well! She ominscient at what she does and she speaks & raps eloquently! Mc Lyte, Queen Latifah are 2 of the best that has strucked Rap & Acting (hands down). Thanks to Neema B. for not being raunchy & making Civil Brand out to be a cliché' prison chick flick! Tichina Arnold (Pam) from Martin showed that she's versatile with her skills. I loved when Tichina punched Lisa in the face & snatched her chain, like ''Bitch Ante-Up''. I'll express my Hatred for Clifton Powell's character... He had the balls to think that he & his boss would get away with turning these inmates into Tricks!!!! When Monica Calhoun & the rest of them were beating his ass I got an Adrenalin rush! They took over the prison on some Attica sh*t (You Know). Mos Def was feeble at 1st but he found the courage to help with cause, so he was cool. Cervantes/Mc Lyte was on the wrong team, but I'm glad in a way because if she was a convict then she might have been killed also! My biggest complaint is that Neema should've kept most characters alive so that they could've wreap the benefit of being Emancipated along with the narrator Da Brat! As I said before all of these prison movies are an example of how prisoners are slaved (it must be Seen & Heard). It should be Rectified why aren't these Tyrants being brought to Justice as the criminals that they are? It's F***ing sad that a prisoners has to make clothing & be paid little to nothing after completing it!... After that they'll Rape the Consumers by charging 2 arms & 1 leg for those items (A Total conspiracy)! I feel that Neema could've found someone else to play Lisa Raye's role, I wasn't getting anything from her! Jada Pinkett would've been suitable to play L. Raye's role! I enjoyed the sound track plenty because it had a touch of Poetry!

Warning: Spoilers
Uplifting and Funny

Funny and Loved It.

I have to be honest when I first heard of this movie. My first thought was another bad movie like the Cookout. To my pleasant surprise It was really good. It has a positive message which will appeal to anyone. Monique plays a salesperson trying create a clothing line for plus-size women while battling the prejudice that she meets from others as well as accepting who she is. A movie about self-esteem,self-improvement, self-awareness. I would recommended this to anyone.

Phat Girlz proves that being big can also be beautiful in this entertaining, heartfelt comedy. Fed up with the mumu-style clothing in popular stores Jazmine decides to come up with her own clothing line. Her boss and her own self-doubt prove to be her biggest hurdle.

Actors: Mo'Nique, Kendra C. Johnson, Jimmy Jean-Louis, Godfrey, Joyful Drake

Loved It

Very Entertaining film
6 November 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Very Entertaining

This movie is getting unwarranted bad reviews. I'm disappointed to see so many judgmental reviewers who are completely overlooking the premise of this movie. While it may not be for everyone, it certainly was entertaining and in a sea of meaningless and offensive movies, this one actually spreads a positive message. I just wish people would stop watching and reviewing Tyler Perry movies if they don't like him or his previous work or believe his plots are redundant. If you're not a fan, stay away...that's a no-brainer.

In one of his most satisfying films to date, Tyler Perry keeps the faith with his devoted audience, giving them his signature mash-up of heart-wrenching melodrama (there's enough material here for a dozen Lifetime movies), outrageous comic relief, and soul-stirring spiritual uplift. Adapted from his play of the same name, I Can Do Bad All by Myself stars Taraji P. Henson as April, another damaged Perry woman on the verge. She's an alcoholic nightclub singer involved with a controlling married man and estranged from her mother and her church (despite the best efforts of a congregant portrayed by Gladys Knight). When her mother dies, April is forced to take in her dead crack-addict sister's three children. She does not exactly put out the welcome mat. Perry's crowd-pleasing signature character, Madea, aka "the heavyweight champion of the world," is mostly offscreen, but she makes the most of her scant screen time, serving up her own brand of old school discipline ("I promise you gonna come up missing," she threatens one troubled teen who talks back to her) and values-added wisdom ("You get out of this life what you put into it"). Will April finally see the light, accept the Lord, and open her heart to the kids and the saintly (and handsome) Colombian immigrant handyman (Adam Rodriguez) who lives in her basement? Knight, Marvin Winans, and Mary J. Blige raise the roof with showstopping gospel and blues numbers that capture the fervor of a Perry theatrical experience. Another Perry film not screened in advance for critics, another film that was No. 1 at the box office its opening weekend, I Can Do Bad All by Myself is further testimony that, for now, Perry can seemingly do no wrong.

16 Blocks (2006)

Bruce Willes Best
30 October 2009
Warning: Spoilers
People Can Change.

Veteran director Richard Donner (the first and best "Superman" and "Lethal Weapon") does an excellent job of moving things along in regards to the plot as well as crisply addressing the psychological, moral and social implications of his characters actions in the terrific "16 Blocks." And it helps tremendously to have Bruce Willis and Mos Def in the leading roles. Willis: gutted, disheveled, disgusted with life and his job as an NYC detective, Jack Mosley... swigging out of a 5th of Canadian Club at 8 AM, limping from an injured leg, looking and acting every bit as a man who has given up on life and waiting for retirement so he can put a bullet through his head. But there is a lot more going on in Jack's head and Willis is very much up to the task of giving him a truthful inner life that both grates on your nerves as well as touches your heart. Though hampered by a cartoon character voice, the excellent Mos Def gives small time crook Eddie Bunker emotional weight and depth. Eddie's motto? "People can change" ...a mantra that will resonate all through this film. Donner has tackled some weighty emotional and social issues here: redemption by way of the truth, save a life and that life becomes your responsibility...themes not usually associated with this type of police action picture. In fact"16 Blocks" reminds me very much of Sidney Lumet's sublime "The Verdict" in its juxtaposition of the casualties of basic human nature and its failings and the morality or lack thereof of Justice.

CUBE Does It Again

Warning: Spoilers
CUBE Does It Again

Barbershop 2: Back in Business is a great sequel, one which delivers fresh, subversive laughs. Sure the plot is just about the same as the first, but the movie still entertains and the cast is even better since we have a few new characters, such as Queen Latifah who plays Gina, the owner of another barbershop near Calvin's. Ice Cube returns as Calvin Palmer, the owner of a very popular barbershop on the Chicago Southside. The entire cast does return, and offers something a little new to the film, surely Eddie (Cedric the Entertainer) for in this film he rambles about the Kobe Bryant trial, R. Kelly and Michael Jackson as well as a few others. Eve returns as Teri, Sean Patrick Thomas, Michael Ealy, Troy Garity and more. I should also point out that this installment is directed by a different director, Kevin Rodney Sullivan who made his debut with this film and he keeps the franchise going more than well. Barbershop 2: Back In Business is rated PG-13 for Language, Sexual Material and Brief Drug References. The language is a bit bawdy and rough, there's also sexual innuendo nothing explicit though. The film has already been a hit and surely deserves to be one, I'm not too sure if it's better than the first but it sure is as good. Head down to the theatre and check out Barbershop 2.

Moving, funny, sad, and intensely human
30 October 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Moving, funny, sad, and intensely human

About thirty minutes into this film, I must confess that I didn't think I was going to like it, but I ended up liking it a great deal. The first problem I had was the look of the film, with an exceptionally grainy cast to the images, made worse by a series of extreme close ups, and bleached out colors. The film never ended up looking good, but the it bothered me less as it went on. The second thing that bothered me was that the set up seemed a bit too stereotypical: black sheep of the family April living in squalor in another town (New York City) makes a Thanksgiving dinner for her disapproving family (loving but sometimes overwhelmed father, younger and negativistic sister, go-with-the-flow younger brother, grandmother suffering from Alzheimer's, and hypercritical, cold, and unloving mother, who is undergoing--probably futility--chemotherapy for breast cancer). Of course, everything starts going wrong and gets worse (April and her boyfriend obviously have no culinary skills, oven is broken and she has extreme difficulty finding anyone who can help her, her mother in the car bringing her family to NYC is constantly berating April and creating a poisoned atmosphere, etc.), and I felt the whole thing was a bit too predictable (which it in part remained). But at some point about halfway through the film, I really started enjoying the film. Sure, it still looked bad, but I started enjoying getting to know the characters, I began to find the humor more and more biting, and I started to want her family to be pleasantly surprised at April's almost heroic efforts to create perhaps the last good day they would all have as a family. I was also enjoying some of the quirky neighbors we meet, including a very helpful middle-aged African American couple living below her, and a bizarre upstairs neighbor with a nice, new stove (played by Sean Hayes of WILL AND GRACE). Things both at April's apartment, with her boyfriend (who unhappily runs into her drug dealer ex-boyfriend just before the dinner starts), and inside the car get worse and worse until everything apparently collapses. And then, perhaps a bit too neatly, everything is put back together again. But just like the characters in the film, we in the end want everything to be nice and pleasant, and it isn't at all hard acceding to that inclination.

I liked the cast a great deal. Oliver Platt (he and NOT Will Ferrell should be starring in A CONFEDERACY OF DUNCES!) is as excellent as always, and Patricia Clarkson is outstanding as April's dying and acerbic mother. She is especially funny in the scene where she smokes dope (to counteract the effects of the chemo) and seems to rewind to her youth in the car. Katie Holmes is made to be as unlovely as it is possible to make her, but she still possesses enough wounded charm to make us root for her making her dinner a success. Indeed, her ongoing struggles both against fate and against her own culinary ineptness renders her as quite the heroine by the end of the film.

This film isn't for everyone. It is a bit bleak, and it isn't the prettiest film in the world to look at, and fans of DAWSON'S CREEK might want to see a prettier Katie Holmes, but if one can get past all this, one just might discover that this is a funny, inspiring, and moving film.

Rent it. Buy it. Watch it An Amazing movie

I can't understand the negative reviews. It's an amazing movie. This is a prime example of why not to listen to critics. A complex and touching film. Don't read the reviews, be your own judge....

I am trying to build a tradition around Memorial Day that involves watching a movie that carefully portrays the sacrifice made by those we are supposed to remember on this holiday. I just watched Miracle at St. Anna and have decided to add it to the list alongside Band of Brothers, Saving Private Ryan, We Were Soldiers, etc. The story of those four soldiers and the people they encountered is powerful. Fighting for your country when your country doesn't have your back is something I can't imagine and yet it happens. So many have been in this position, faced it and died. It brings tears to my eyes. Everyone should see this movie. Everyone should answer the question, "how can I put an end to racism?" and then act on that answer.

A Must-See
26 October 2009
A Must-See "All Men...especially Black Men Are Dogs and No Good" is the typical stereotypes that some African-American Women say about the African-American Male but this film takes you on a inside journey with real African-American men who are NOT like that but it's the Angry & Bitter Black woman who have been scorned in previous relationships because of the bad choices she made fail to look at her own responsibilities and chooses to take it out and assume all Black Men are useless.

I enjoy this movie cause it's a focus on the conscious but on the other hand, the negative I have to say about this movie I feel the documentary part could've been a bit shortened in between segments.

This movie also will admit that there are some African-American Men who are indeed no good but on the same token there's just as many Good African-American Men as well.

This film will explain itself in full detail once you began to watch it

Enjoyed This Movie
23 October 2009
ENJOYED THIS MOVIE

I'd never heard of this movie when I picked it up in DVD shop so I took a chance and bought it. That was 6.50 euro well spent because I was not disappointed. This movie is funny at times, sad at times, thought-provoking at times, but entertaining at all times. Anyhoo, I turned my ringer off so I wouldn't be disturbed. If you like "30 Years To Life" you'll like this movie too. The main reason I like this movie is because the characters are so real: the drunk who puts somebody on blast at the family gathering, the "Oreo" friend (black on the outside, white on the inside), the "Ms. Independent I Don't Need No Man I Got Dental Benefits and my own business" female, the angry one who has that inner turmoil but is taking it out on everybody else, the so- called "Mack" who fronts like he's "The Man" when he's really on lock, the "We need to take this relationship to another level" one,(marriage) and the loud sister, the one who keeps the party going no matter what (Wendy Raquel Robinson). The only thing I didn't like about this movie is that in some scenes women were referred to as "b-----s" and "h--s." Anyway, Guy Torry is an outstanding actor, he acted his heiny off in this one. His character is the one that stood out. But don't take my word for it, take a chance like I did and see it for yourself. You won't be disappointed.

Excellent Movie
20 October 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Excellent Movie!!!!! The movie was definitely different than the African American crap they feed on us today...It was excellent and I found myself engrossed in the characters, and story..Lia Johnson, and Lamman Rucker did an outstanding job, like the other reviwer stated...don't judge this movie by the title...give it a shot ..you will be glad you did....Excellent Movie. Jay Brooks is that black guy who digs indie rock, graphic novels and dates white chicks. After a slew of bad break-ups, Jay gives up white women "cold turkey" and goes on a mission: "Operation Brown Sugar." Jay doesn't fit the "brotha" stereotype, however, so he fails miserably with the "sistahs." Then Jay meets Catherine, a misunderstood "Half-Rican Canadian" who's as righteously quirky as he is. But to win her heart, Jay will have to figure out that his commitment issues go beyond race. An international festival favorite written by Courtney Lilly (Arrested Development, Everybody Hates Chris), I'm Through With White Girls is a fresh and funny romantic comedy that proves finding love begins with finding yourself.

Kiss and Tail: The Hollywood Jump Off

Kiss & Tail is narrated by animated radio/TV talk show diva Wendy Williams. This documentary about the seedy side of the hip-hop industry investigates the rarely seen side of the backstage rap culture. Infamous party-girl Karrine Steffans leads viewers through an intimate look at the world where sex is a means of control - though it can sometimes be a source of power - and offers her insights on how the groupie lifestyle routinely leaves unsuspecting women in shambles It is an inside look into the Hip Hop video industry. A must have if you are curious about what goes on behind the curtains! It's not a pro-Karrine Steffans at all although it is very fair in balancing the point of view of the video vixen. Lots of sex going on and Wendy Williams should give up her day job and narrate docs! The title sequence is hilarious. The DVD extras are great as well and unless you are a total prude you'll really enjoy this.

8 October 2009
Warning: Spoilers
'Issues' stars Laz Alonso and Ben Watkins, playing two room mates fumbling to find love, get laid, and pay their bills. Their luck improves when an old roommate is replaced with a female room mate who helps the two guys see the light of day about men, women and what matters in relationships, while striving for her own thespian aspirations. The real lesson she teaches them is how to be a friend to a woman and make space for them in their lives, rather than merely her pants. After all, the two protagonist real fear is not knowing or finding love in a world where love is rare. Some might be bored with the idea of a movie that doesn't portray black men killing each other, dealing drugs, or destroying the local community, but this one is a lot of fun. For an independent film the cinematography is more than decent. There are more than few clunkers of films out there, but this one is a pleasant 87 minutes. The final scene is a fine one where the guys' father comes to the financial rescue and pays the mortgage on the dwelling they are sharing, perhaps alleviating the stress they have in meeting one of their expenses. Does this help from daddy make it possible to concentrate on learning to love and appreciate women as friends and companions? You'll have to get this DVD to find out.

Great action, Good Plot, Great Characters....Good movie, I liked this movie as well, Duane Martin is the ultra cool Private Investigator, Vivica Fox plays his "Inspector Gadget" cohort. The ending is trip!!! Get the movie and see for yourself! I am not a big Fan of Duane Martin Nor Ms. Vivica "GHETTO" Fox but I did really enjoy this movie and I am a tuff critic. It was very low budget and some of the stunts Mr. Martin performs are so not him the acting was just o.k. but the plot of the story was actually keeping me in my seat. I loved the ending and I would recommended this movie for the action, the plot and nothing else. I have to give a shot out to my girl Meagan Good for putting it down and doing her THING YOU GO GIRL.....

Back In the Day Favorite Movies This movie was an absolute joy; one of the best black films I have seen in a long time. It definitely took me back to the days when all those great R&B songs were out and to my first crush and first boyfriend, etc. This movie just put together a whole bunch of good looking black people into a story that's not about violence or any kind of negativity, just pure fun; it's what life is all about for those of us who appreciate but can't fully relate to life in the hood. It was so much fun. I loved every minute of it. The story was great; the acting was convincing, the plot was realistic and it's a movie I will always think about with a huge grin on my face. Two thumbs way up in my book!

Very Entertaining film
4 September 2009
Fake Preacher is a very entertaining film. I've often wondered how many of these church preachers were really teaching the gospel and not just ripping off their parishioners. The feature deals with a subject few would talk about. Peachers' who con their church members to line their pockets. This film centers around a con man who does just that. However in the end, he gets his up and comings, which once again demonstrates good always triumphs over evil. I thought the acting was good and they did have some, comedy in the film, however I thought the star, Eddie Goines standed out among all the rest. I recommend this film, specially to Christians who are still looking for a church. beware, there are really some fake preachers out there.

Purchase, A Must

This movie is a much purchase. This movie talks about issues that are tabu in our communities among blacks and Arabs such as interacial relationships. The movie should be watched in our homes in order to bring dialog to the things that are never thought of or mentioned, but does occur and is often wondered. I think this is an excellent movie. I love to see movies were racism is addressed. I really like how this movie touches issues on interracial couples and dating outside your religion. There are a few things I'll give to this movie. I thought it was on point when it showed males of color opining that they could date interracially, but not their sisters. Others said, "It's okay to do that, so long as it isn't one of my family members." There is also an emphasis on, "Be civil to them, but don't take them home!" These are all dynamics that are common in the US, for those who are honest enough to admit it. I think this movie is well worth the buy.

Fair Game (2005)

African-American Romantic Film
4 September 2009
Fair Game is a very interesting film about a common topic that is not addressed much on the big screen. It's a really great film. Stacey and Michael have a real chemistry, but the prospect of a big promotion and other factors stand in the way of the two of them pursuing a relationship.

Fair Game won several awards on the film festival circuit. Although Gina Torres is probably the most well known cast member, Fair Game features stellar acting from Christopher B. Duncan, Kellita Smith, Michael Whaley, Terri Vaughn, Mother Love and comedian Mark Christopher Lawrence. I like buying these types of movies (One's that are not highly promoted) because they usually have decent story lines. This wasn't a movie where the men were degrading the women or the women shaking their behinds all over the place.

It was a movie of black professionals who were finding their way in their professions and personal lives. A good date movie.
