Hipster / acquired taste comedy movie
20 May 2024
  • Not family friendly movie, I think others mentioned this, but it's true , it would be very awkward to watch this with family.

  • It was a bit slow in the start, but the creatures grew on me, and the movie is organized and made in such a manner that one is suppose to like the family members of these creatures. They each have different personalities.

  • Many many wood scenes. Which were done not bad actually.

  • They made the creatures not very smart, which is a theme throughout the movie. In fact it harps on their simple minds in most of the scenes.

  • It's just overall a bizarre movie , with some very good actors behind the costume. Definitely stands out and is memorable for better or worse if you make it through it.

Great show, really great video game adoption I have to say
20 April 2024
  • If you have played the Fallout games - which this is based on - it is actually pretty solid if not an excellent adoption !

  • It has a lot of intricacies, mutants, ghouls, factions, wacky dialogue a lot of if not all the aspect that made the game great in the first place.

  • The main characters and their stories are surprisingly well done. Very entertaining.

  • Seeing Benjamin Linus aka Michael Emerson on screen again , it had me almost jump out of the chair in euphoria. He was a character in LOST and there was something tremendously nostalgic having him appear.

  • The game is about exploring the wasteland in an interesting setting, going on an adventure, dangers, adoption to circumstances, survival. This show certainly felt like an adventure . With a well ironed out source material and screenwriting. Well done !

Solid performance, dialogue was not bad
11 March 2024
I thought it was actually not too bad. I was surprised that the dialogue was that good. There are a few surprises which I could not predict and I really enjoyed the redneck theme.

Bloom - you have to give it to him, what a solid performance. He puts so much effort into this role and it shows.

The music was surprisingly good.

What was lame was the end part. It felt a bit low budget. There are not many locations in the movie.

The violence was also pretty decent.

I would say someone really put thought and effort into writing and making these characters and it has to be commended.

Well done.

Much better than the 1st instalment
2 March 2024
Bony Timothée Chalamet continues being adopted by the tribe, he talks love with the tribe woman. It is all a bit superficial and awkward.

Also Paul (Timothée Chalamet) taking on some hulky opponents, despite being very skinny and meek.

Ultimately , skinny Chalamet story seems to be about revenge for his house, which was a bit lame I have to say, after the movie made it clear. And love, yes let's not forget the 'shoved down our throats' love aspects of the movie, between Zendaya and Chalamet. Oof, It becomes corny at this stage.

The Harkonnen scenes are great, I didn't expect them to go into their homeworld but the movie does it. And it is very interesting. But again, I found it odd having the old ladies clan being portrayed as pulling all the strings in the background. Something just doesnt click when it is portrayed on screen.

Also, the movie is very long, but good enough edited that you want to complete it.

They made Bautista meek and pathetic this time around , why on earth? He is a great actor who deserves better.

Also the visual spectacle and action scenes in the desert are pretty entertaining. It feels different from the first part of Dune. For the better.

Overall it's A TON better than the first instalment. But its 'corniness' of the author of Dune and the book is showing through. Hope this helps anyone who.

A Fresh Take on Sci-Fi with a Minimalist Twist
4 February 2024
  • If you liked the movie "Cube" or "Buried" you might want to check this movie out. It feels like a black mirror episode to be honest. It's definitely sci fi with an invisible commentary surrounding social media. It's a movie definitely not for everyone.

  • It's has a fresh take on minimal , as few as possible actors and settings, type of movies. I love these type of movies. Be aware that the movie takes place on only 1 camera, meaning 1 camera angle.

  • Melvin Gregg who plays #000000014 , actually does a great job. Decent acting and his screen presence kept me engaged and glued to the screen. He comes off as likable and has a kind heart.

  • The first 15 minutes are definitely a mixture of, ' I hope this movie is good?', 'I hope the main actor can act with the material he's been given?'. The answer is yes on both.

  • It instantly reminded me of Cube but with the whole spiel/layer of Twitch (the live streaming platform) permeating the movie.

  • The soundtrack is a bit quirky at first but It really grew on me. I now hum it involuntary. 'dud' - dud dud dud.

  • I have to admit , I really enjoyed this movie. It kept me guessing. And the character developments with its twists and turns were actually not bad. I am very happy I stumbled across it and gave it a try.

The Holdovers (2023)

The script felt tight. The screenplay was thought through. The whole project felt like a labour of love.
26 January 2024
The script felt tight. The screenplay was thought through. The whole project felt like a labour of love.

I genuinly did not expect this end-result. It blew away all my brief impressions I had prior to the movie. I dismissed it as a movie that can be watched later. Later when there is nothing better to watch. Almost like a pity watching. But oh my, what a pleasant surprise. I'm a sucker for people sitting around a table or in a room , type of movie. And went in with this in mind. What I left with was the most charming experience, It felt like being there with unlikely assemble of characters. In a bygone time.

It has to be said Paul Giamatti absolutely carries this movie. He is more or less the movie - with his portrayal of his character. Every time he is on screen, the movie magic happens and it is immensely entertaining.

Nice fresh Nicolas Cage movie that is pretty good.
26 December 2023
  • It's a nice refreshing movie for 2023 with a premise that seems to work on screen. It reminded me of 'Being John Malkovich' 1999.

  • Nicolas Cage does a pretty good job portraying a boring professor.

-The writing is well researched and rather good. Academia, social media, agency, marriage. Well done.

  • The pace and entertainment is quite good as well. There were very few dull moments and one often wonders what will happen next.

  • The dynamic between Cage and his wife was wholesome and one of the charming and really well done aspects of the movie.

  • The trailer makes it seem like there is a framework, rules and resolution to the dream aspect. But the dreams are more a vehicle to tell his story and character development. In other words the dream aspect mystery depiction is not as dominant as one thinks. Aka the trailer showed some of the juiciest dream content while the movie these play minor parts.

Kind of a forgettable mess, but still watchable
26 December 2023
  • I would say that this movie is another hero universe with side characters exposition, sci fi elements, baddies all the standard cliché stuff. In other words, a 'been there done that' type of movie.

  • The format is rather awkward, they squeezed a ton of story into 2hours. Some characters are outright shoehorned into this condensed movie. Like General Titus or whatever his name was. It was really awkward how he was portrayed and depicted on screen. Rushed and edited together in an odd manner. What I am trying to say is , a series format with multiple episodes , is clearly the better format. By a mile. It would have given the characters the justice they deserved and the story telling would have improved drastically.

Julia Roberts teeth and Mahershala Ali performance make for a great unfolding mystery movie
11 December 2023
  • Surprisingly good. The mystery keeps you hooked and the story telling has some clever choices which one can appreciate in hindsight.

  • Mahershala Ali performance is fantastic ! If all the movie and the rest of the characters where a ying, Mahershala would be the yang. Such a good actor. One feels right at home.

  • Julia Roberts character feels a bit odd at first, but her performance is good enough that it eventually becomes believable and acceptable. I really enjoyed her teeth in this one, they are not perfect anymore and I like that.

  • I really enjoyed the absence of things that one would expect from this kind of movie aka, gun fights, blood horror, betrayal, military dudes, extra-terrestrial elements. It is quite refreshing in this regard.

  • instead the movie emphasis the human elements quite well. That even during a time of hardship , we make mistakes, act irrational and yet still try to act human and kind.

Good action flick, worth a watch, but be aware there is no spoken dialogue
5 December 2023
  • No dialogue in the movie. This is somewhat cool and unique at first. Until it constantly hits you over the head and becomes awkward. I think dialogue would have elevated this movie. The wife, the detective, random strangers interacting Joel Kinnaman through words. Instead it is 'clever' shortcuts and text messages that fill the void of talking.

  • The action is great. The standard underdog to hero journey.

  • The beginning where the backstory gets established drags on a bit. And by bit I mean for a good chunk of the movie. Given that the film is nicely edited and using clever stand-ins instead of dialogue, I'm surprised they go with a heavy layer of backstory exposition for a huge chapter of the movie. That being said, it is not bad the execution.

  • The law enforcement in this movie , let's just say you will have to suspend disbelief.

  • The Christmas theme is a bit ridiculous in hindsight and doesn't really make sense. But in terms of shoehorning an action flick just in time for Christmas it seems to make sense.

  • Joel Kinnaman is a fantastic actor, and is fun to watch.

  • The second half reminded me of Dredd 2012. With all its bullets flying, seeking for justice, and ultimate conclusion.

  • Overall I'd say give it a watch, it's not a bad movie for 2023. And it has the balls to do something different which one has to commend.

The first 40minutes are stellar and so entertaining
4 December 2023
  • The first 40minutes are brilliant. If anything I recommend everyone to watch it just for the first 40minutes. It is incredibly well done. The anxiety inducing city neighbourhood and its characters are fantastic. It was very much entertaining for 40minutes.

  • After 40minutes it seems to fizzle out, the pace is different and it is somewhat of a different movie. Still entertaining and funny but the further in duration we go the more slow and meta it becomes. Kafkaesque. I tried to embrace it but it would just not resonate in on an entertainment level. By the end it just drags and disappoints to be honest.

  • It is more or less a dark comedy tragedy with a layer of father and mommy issues on top. It reminded me of the Joker movie at times and Wes Anderson twists and turns.

  • I was a surprised when I noting that the guy who made Hereditary and Midsommar , Ari Aster made this movie.

Great slow burn show about captivity
27 November 2023
  • A bit slow burn but I liked the slow burn. They pulled it off nicely.

  • Reminded me a bit of The OA on Netflix. With the theme on captivity.

  • The references to Edmund Kemper and Viktor Frankl were great. Well implemented. It gave the series more depth and meaning.

  • Some episode are short some are longer. Which goes to show that it is a show that has been carefully thought through, chapter by chapter.

  • The show really leaves one hanging of how it will conclude. Right till the very end. Which is pretty good story telling. To keep guessing.

  • Dr Strauss, the main character has a great background story, complex and not something I have seen before in a show.

  • This show is not for everyone, but if you like a show with an intimate setting and a small cast, this might be of interest. Not bad.

Ridley Scott's 'Napoleon': Epic Battles Meet Mismatched Portrayal
26 November 2023
-Focuses on Napoleon-Josephine relationship, potentially alienating some viewers. But it is an interesting historic take/twist on a movie about napoleon.

-Joaquin Phoenix as Napoleon feels mismatched; lacks historical resemblance and understanding. This goes back to Joaquin admitting to not knowing how to play Napoleon till right before shooting schedule.

-Disconnect in Phoenix's portrayal doesn't do justice to the real Napoleon. If one reads his letters and reads about Napoleon, does a guy like Joaquin come to mind? No?

-Battle scenes are entertaining and well-crafted, highlighting historical details. At least a genuine attempt at it. Probably the best part of the movie

-Commendable attempt at French cultural authenticity during this time period. I mean we are talking about an American / Hollywood attempt here.

-Over two hours long, prompting the question if a series would be more suitable. Or another format.

-Overall a bit of a disappointment. But expected , given its a ridley scott movie and his track record.

-A genuine gem by ridley scott is "The Last Duel" 2021, which I recommend to watch. Set in medieval France. That one flew under the radar, but is a lot better than napoleon and shows ridley scott's potential of the craft.

Oppenheimer: An Overhyped Epic That Falls Short on Expectations and Overstays its Welcome
24 July 2023
  • Tries to do too much in its three-hour run time. It should have been a much tighter 90-minute narrative.

  • The film attempts to weave together too many stories, topics, and characters, resulting in a convoluted and cluttered narrative. The story might have been better suited to a mini-series format, similar to HBO's "Chernobyl."

  • Historic characters, including prominent physicists, are portrayed in a ham-fisted, over-the-top manner that lacks authenticity.

  • Certain scenes, such as Oppenheimer reading Sanskrit during a sex scene, are silly and outrageous. It felt absurd at that point.

  • The early parts of the film are cringe-inducing in their heavy-handed attempts to portray Oppenheimer as a prodigy, through awkward name-dropping of book titles, famous physicists, and politicians.

  • A significant missed opportunity is the film's refusal to delve into the complexities of theoretical physics. Instead, it oversimplifies the subject, relying on clichéd scenes that fail to do justice.

A weaker alternative but still OK movie for those who like this genre
15 April 2023
  • If you are familiar with the Platform, Coherence, Fall - Minimalistic movies where the critical emphasis is on the actor and the plot. Mystery and survival. This is an interesting take on it, but with less/no mystery. This movie will only appeal for a minority of audience.

  • There are some headscratchers regarding his survival skills. How he plans to escape. It is a bit odd. But it is what it is.

  • Some scenes are more drawn out and drowning on , then they ought to be. More concise editing and cutting would have benefited the movie. It is indeed quite slow burn.

  • Dafoe is a great actor. Not sure if the full range of his skills and performance are utilized in this movie. Sometimes I even asked myself if he was the right choice for the movie.

  • Overall it's not a bad movie all things considered. It has structure, one can follow it along, it engages in more complex themes, it uses good cinematography, it keeps it as minimal as possible.

Familiar, Yet enjoyable: A Review of the Japanese Adaptation of "Cube"
9 April 2023
If you have seen the first cube movie , this one should feel very familiar. I have to admit - it was still an enjoyable ride. This movie is still different enough to get a kick out of it. It has Japanese themes portrayed, like seniority, childhood drama, childhood vs adulthood. It has mystery elements, lowkey mathematical elements, but most of all interpersonal drama.

Don't expect a big budget and lots of effects. This one plays it safe. If you are a fan of these type of movies (actors trapped in a room e.g. The platform, Coherence, 12 angry men etc) I'd say give it a go.

In conclusion, the Japanese adaptation of "Cube" is an enjoyable ride for those who appreciate the original film and are fans of the genre. Although it plays it safe in some respects, the movie is different enough to keep viewers engaged and entertained. If you're a fan of suspenseful, character-driven films, give this one a go.

Great indie sci fi that does a good job to be honest
1 October 2022
  • Great premise, interesting story.

  • There is sci-fi scenes pretty much every other scene, meaning they did a great job of filling the sci-fi hunger appetite.

  • Botanic and nature emphasis. They did a great job concepting how plant life adapts in the wild after a disaster. Plant life and sustainability plays a big role in this movie.

  • The dad character is great. He is a pessimist, the protagonist an optimist.

  • Side mysteries are always a great plus. Like the pilgrims and the old labs and the citadels. It gave the movie much more depth.

  • The CGI is great.

  • The actors are pretty solid as well.

  • It's not Hollywood caliber by a long shot, and has more an indie feel to it but that are all great aspects it has going for.

Loud dumb action but fun if you make it through it
28 September 2022
  • Suspend disbelief, goes without saying. It's meant to be fun and stupid.

  • Loud stupid, bombastic fast pasted action
  • Stereotypes galore, which is fun, but here it overstays its welcome.

  • It tries to tell a clever story but falls flat in the end. It genuinly thought it was clever with all the twists and outcomes. A bit embarrassing.

  • Not sure if Brad Pitt of all actors is suited to be the main protagonist for this role?!? It was awkward to watch this old man play a young hip guy.

  • The characters were entertaining , the way they met each other.

  • The whole British duo really overstays its welcome. Gosh. It was so over the top and just dragging on and on. When the UK music tracks accompany the british characters it becomes cringe deluxe.

  • It's one of these action movies that is better than the average braindead served on a plate action, but ultimately forgettable. Meaning it won't even reach cult status by a long shot.

A movie for fans and followers of the Full metal alchemist
26 September 2022
  • I would say this movie is for people who love the show
  • We are very fortunate to receive a movie like this at all. And that they didn't pull the plug or suspend this endeavour.

  • You will need to suspend some disbelief and just take in the costumes the special effects and acting. All things considered I think they did a good job with the editing.

  • The story is great and complex. It is just so refreshing even in 2022, after seeing so many US movies with cheap flat story lines.

  • Hohenheim and his backstory is great.

  • The movie has the theme of constant struggles forth and back. Give and take. Setbacks and progress. It is great.

  • They have been through so much. It is heartbreaking.

  • After the movie I looked at a few episodes, beginning and end episodes, and I think they did a great job. Catering to FMA audiences and satisfying us.

I watched the women's European championship in climbing
17 September 2022
  • Having watched women's European championship in climbing, it's unfortunate that these 2 women would not make the cut.

  • The muscle mass and climbing skill is not evident in the 'actors'.

  • The social media aspect is a bit annoying but turns out to be critical.

  • There were moments where indeed your palms get sweaty if you manage to immerse yourself in the height and camera work.

  • I'm not sure how these two millennials survived the strong winds ! And the freezing nights ! A bit far fetched.

  • The blond lady 'Hunter' was pretty badass. In the sense that the writers did a good job writing her fearless.

  • I'm not sure if I can recommend this movie, it has a unique premise that I enjoyed. But it is also a bit silly and flat. If the trailer appealed then go for it.

Christian Bale is great in this
12 September 2022
  • Wacky and entertaining. Appealed.

  • The franchise is getting a bit tiresome so it is good they turned it up a notch with outlandish aspects.

  • Christian bale is once again a great actor.

  • There were surprisingly other famous actors in this movie making a surprise appearance.

  • A bit long in duration. It follows the classical hero journey ark. And plays on the pre existing thor movies.

-It was great seeing aging Natalie Portman in this. She shows a more vulnerable side of herself in this movie which was great.

  • The music was very annoying, in the sense that it was very iconic track pieces that are meant for nostalgia ears. It was awkward at times hearing these famous rock music tracks overplayed again and again to this movie.

Not bad, I'd say check it out.
19 August 2022
  • J. K. Simmons's voice is in the movie. Not J. K. Simmons himself. A shame.

  • Special effects are not bad.

  • The story is quirky and interesting with a few twists I didn't see coming. That being said, there is repetition, and it sometimes drags on and on.

  • The setting/location is surprisingly intriguing and unique for the story to unfold. It was fun.

  • It surprisingly did not feel like a cheap movie. It felt like thought, care and love went into it. And the audience can appreciate that.

  • Only one funny moment fell flat, the other funny moments landed pretty well.

  • I'd say check the movie out if this is your type of genre.

Good start, but becomes less finetuned and weak throughout
16 August 2022
  • The first episodes were the greatest and strongest. Fine-tuned, sharp, and purpose-driven. With enough complexity.

  • David Thewlis was fantastic.

  • The locations are not bad.

  • Drags and becomes blunt and dull after episode 5 unfortunately. Think the usual Netflix content expansion filler to keep you watching episodes.

  • There are a few characters they could have done without, side characters, and support characters. That aspect was the weakest part.

  • The strongest parts are where something falls into place that didn't seem too important a couple of episodes back. A character that was trivial suddenly becomes an important building block.

  • Does the meta thing "what is humanity bla bla"
  • The show seems to be modernized with very diverse and woke takes on the source material. It's so shoved down your throat that it can be painful at times.

Don't be fooled Prey is forgettable and bad
13 August 2022
  • For 1719 the movie is pretty un-authentic. There are multiple flaws and historic inaccuracies.

-The protagonist does not move or act much like a competent hunter. Wrong actor or casting choice.

  • Not to sound arrogant, but "Hulu" should have been a big warning flag
  • The movie treats the audience dumb. Hence you get what you sowed.

  • One would have thought to get some clever spin or originality from that director, but it's as bland and predictable as it gets. Why can't these studios ever take some more creative risk?

  • Avoid the movie.

Taron Egerton performance carries this
10 August 2022
  • Has a similar vibe and feel to MINDHUNTER on Netflix
  • Taron Egerton is fantastic in this show. One can say that without him it wouldn't be the same tv show. His written dialogue is great!

  • I recommend watching the show in 1 go. Perhaps 2. To get the whole impact and progression.

  • Addictive, it doesn't quite have the cliff-hangers as other big shows have, but rather does its own thing. By episode 2 you will probably be hooked.

  • Ray Liotta, the protagonists dad, does a fantastic performance as well. Well done.

-Sepideh Moafi, Lauren McCauley, has some great dialogue scenes that were genuinely clever and curveballs.

  • It will become clear why the show is called 'Black Bird'
  • Not as graphic and gory or violent as I expected.
