Awful as a movie
6 February 2007
The first time I saw it a couple of years ago (on rented DVD) I was amazed at the very low quality of production, and didn't understand how the heck they would release this terrible film to the market. This is the movie about a man, who is lost with blind faith. The script was quite all right. Some nice realistic interpretation made the characters quite humane. However, the direction and acting is terrible. Post production (which is not necessary if they want to make a good drama from the already good story but they put it in anyway) seems to be made in the 80's, not at the turn of the millennium. Horrible repetition of score. I didn't give this film a one star due to the sheer courage of the interpretation which made this quite realistic. I saw it one more time a few days ago to write an article for the local magazine. The second viewing only confirmed my first opinion. Watch it if you have to.

Disturbing but good

I just saw Bye Bye Blackbird at the EU Film Festival in Chiang Mai last night. My wife chose to see this film because of its positively-looking synopsis. Well, just the title is the tale-tell sign that what the brochure says is not quite true. This is a very dark film about tragedies at a circus, set during the time when such entertainment is on the brink of extinction.

Excellently filmed. Beautiful surreal shots. Very moving. You have to be cruel not to shed tears watching it.

Superb performances by all brilliant actors and actresses. Although this film is made in Luxemburg, more than 90% of the time the characters do speak European English.
