Happy Ever Afters (2009)
Oh God
I rented this last night to watch with my partner and mother-in-law.
It is utter rubbish. From the corny music, to the very poorly executed 'comedy of errors' acting/editing, to the completely disengaging male lead (he spends a good deal of the film sighing and fumbling for words, but not in a well timed way) this film is completely egregious from beginning until about 20 minutes in when we turned it off and watched 'Everybody's Fine' instead (which by the way, is amazing).
We rented this from our Apple TV, and at one point I did consider penning an email to Steve Jobs to outline my disgust at it being added to the line-up on there.
A Film with Me in It (2008)
saw this in Toronto
This film is very funny, the cast are all excellent. The story, maybe its a bit mad, so what? Its a film, its not meant to be real. I would single out Amy Huberman as being excellent in this, I also saw her in another Irish film that played in Montreal in August, Satellites and Meteorites, where she was flawless. Dylan Moran, while perhaps reprising many of the other characters he has played previously, was very enjoyable to watch, as was Keith Allen though his part was predictably small. A few cameos at the end really were well placed, especially Johnny Rhys, though the context of his cameo was a little close to reality so I'm not sure what way he will come across to auds in Ireland. Throughly enjoyable film, the industry in Toronto reacted extremely positively to it and it along with Kisses really showed us all that Ireland can, when it wants, produce good product. Well done to all involved and I hope it goes well on its release.
Shrooms (2007)
Irish Premiere
An embarrassing affair. I went along last night thinking I'd at least get to see a mildly entertaining slasher movie. Needless to say I was disappointed. This film is terrible and belongs in the bargain box of your local rental place.
I'm hurt that as an Irish citizen my tax was used to spawn such a useless, horrific cinematic experience.
Its your basic cute American teen goes to do something naughty and pays the ultimate price type of gig. Except the cute American teens (and they are cute, really cute) can't act, the local Irish boy sounds like he is from London, the entire plot of the film is designed so a twist is possible at the end and one of the Americans is a DIRECT COPY (nay, a clone) of Jay from the Jay/Silent Bob combo.
An absolutely heinous crime in film-making. There should quite literally be laws against this sort of thing being made.
Studs (2006)
Not as bad...
I have to disagree with the other comments. The film wasn't amazing, the story was simple and probably missed its genre but having had the benefit of reading the original script I lay this blame firmly at the door of the editor. Despite this, it was fairly entertaining, and at least it didn't try to be something it was not, it was a story about a small time team and their drunken manager, it didn't attempt to put them in the FA cup final and it didn't succumb to the traditional happy ending where they win the cup against all odds...
On a side note it had a great cast who did well with poorly thought out dialog.
I wouldn't buy the DVD, but I didn't regret the time I spent watching the film.
