Subspecies (1991)
Badass evil vampire vs. handsome sadsack younger brother and spunky heroine
Suspenseful, campy, with a few good jump scares. Typical storyline for the genre/era: Badass evil vampire vs. Handsome sadsack younger brother and spunky heroine. Some of the acting is a bit over-the-top but overall a decent 90s action/horror film but not very scary.
I wasn't taken with the romantic sub-plot. It felt like it was shoehorned in just because it was expected to be there and it didn't really make much sense to me. Irony being that it became part of the basis for the rest of the film series The events of the film seem to take place over about 4-5 days and in that period and in that time the hero and the heroine interact only 4 times and snog twice, one of those being right before he bites her at the end of the film.
The main heroine makes some idiotic decisions but that's to be expected from this type of film. Though it didn't stop me from yelling ather through the screen. I really liked Radu. He was a badass vampire, with the savagery and bloodthirstiness one expexts from a proper vampire antagonist. Although the finger prosthetics really started to annoy me after a while as did the asthmatic breathing.
Escapee (2011)
Funny in it's badness
There is no doubt this is not a good film. The plot is weak and choppy, and the premise is ridiculous and so far fetched that it's impossible to suspend even the smallest bit of disbelief.
But that being said, I rather enjoyed this film. I watched it after a particularly vile day at work and it improved my mood considerably. It was so bad, it was funny. The best thing about the film, aside from Dominic Purcell, was the the silliness of the whole thing took my mind off the day I'd had.
Definitely wouldn't recommend it for someone wanting a good/serious thriller but if you enjoy a bad film for the sake of it being a bad film or to make fun of it, then give it a watch.
