The Gentlemen (2019)
8/10
The typical untypical Guy Ritchie
8 March 2020
The Gentlemen is mostly stands out throughout its original and great way to tell a story. Like back in times where Ritchie directed "Snatch" or "Lock, Stock and two smoking barrels" this movie is entertaining in so many ways. It is funny, it is bloody and it is weird (just as you know him from his later movies). The dialogues are also just as awesome as the world-building Ritchie does. All in all this is no special flick but it is a wonderful surprise for all those Guy Ritchie fans who were disappointed with his last works.

A Hidden Life (2019)
8/10
Another special atmospheric Terrence Malick flick
18 February 2020
The visually outstanding war drama "A Hidden Life" tells a true, hitherto hardly publicly perceived story of a resistance fighter who rebelled without any great gestures against Hitler and the Third Reich in a lyrical-meditative style as a Jesus allegory. This film works as a philosophical love story, which, precisely because it tells a different view of the Second World War, stands out particularly and is another well-made work by the long-established director Terrence Malick.

Jojo Rabbit (2019)
8/10
Touching satire with its heart at the right place.
11 February 2020
Jojo Rabbit is a very entertaining film that lets the almost 2-hour runtime fly by. I have never seen a film that takes place during the Second World War, which takes its basic principles minimally seriously, but still makes the leap into the serious, even sad. Not to mention the brilliant performance of the young actors (not to mention Scarlett Johannson), this film offers a closed, good-looking overall project, which, however, is not made for everyone due to the black humor.

1917 (2019)
9/10
Technical and visual peak of cinema
3 February 2020
1917 is a brilliant adventure film, which was released in the 1. World War. Apart from an emotionally charged story, realistic dialogues and well acted characters, the movie offers a masterpiece of craftsmanship. Roger Deakins behind the camera manages to create a gripping experience through unique images and consistent camera work close to the main characters. Moreover, the sets seem to be taken from real life and make the viewer feel as if they are at war themselves.

Parasite (2019)
9/10
Painting Social Criticism With a New Color
22 January 2020
For me, Parasite is most convincing because of its confusing story, which is especially convincing because of its untypical pattern, so that it's hard to tell which genre you just saw. The script remains clumsy and at least gives me an oppressive feeling at the end. Moreover, the film is very nice to watch because of the staging and because of the convincing acting and set design you can put yourself in the movie's shoes and put yourself in the shoes of the characters, which are all put on with a lot of love.

Knives Out (2019)
8/10
Rian Johnsons best
11 January 2020
Knives Out is for me a successful connection between comedy, mystery and thriller, which brings back a genre that I love very much: The classic detective films, here constructed as a modern cluedo. The plot is predictable in some places, but you still lack the little detail that makes the film unpredictable. It is a closed product from front to back with good acting performance, an intelligent script, good callbacks and an excellent atmosphere. It's an 8.3 for me.

Well done end of a saga with no risks
2 January 2020
Screenplay 6/10 To be honest there is a lot of hate going on with the screenplay. But I think it is more like the seventh movie. Abrams is orientating on old patterns which worked well in the past. There are some unexpected plot twists but overall it feels not very original.

Direction 8/10 From the visuals to the sound effects, this is a perfect movie. There are so many scenes you got blasted away by beautiful shots. Also the camera work is quite fine, but the editing is a bit too fast, I think.

Acting 8/10 The acting ones for all is surprisingly good. Adam Driver delivers a massive performance, as we know from him, but Daisy Ridley did also show up strong in the movie. The side-gigs Fin and Poe hadn't too much to act strongly but did a fine job.

Soundtrack 9/10 John Williams is crafting a beautiful Star Wars Medley out of all the movies before this. He makes the viewer having goosebumps all the time and totally did his heartblood in this one.

A Hollywood Love Declaration
1 January 2020
Screenplay 9/10 Typical Tarantino dialogues in this movie as expected. It makes you laugh and wonder how many references he did in the movie. The ending also is very well written with an unexpected and an Ah-moment so you get the point of the movie and why it is such slow paced.

Direction 10/10 Tarantino outdoes himself with this movie. There are so many sets in the background when Rick and Cliff are driving down the streets which are only seen one or two frames but are having so much work in it. Also the camera work is very good in the movie. You simply feel like being 50 years back in time with Tarantinos Love Declaration to Hollywood.

Acting 9/10 It is the year of Brad Pitt. With ,,Ad Astra'' and ,,Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood'' he is playing his character very well. I've never seen such a cool guy like Cliff Booth is. In the last scene he is simply hilarious good. Leonardo DiCaprio had the hardest job in portraying an actor who is portraying other roles. And he masters it perfectly. From anger to mourning. From happiness to uncertainty. Margot Robbie is simply ok. She is portraying a good Sharon Tate but does not do anything special I remember after the movie.

Soundtrack 8/10 The soundtrack is Tarantino-like unoriginal songs and soundtracks. But exactly that is why the viewer feels back in time. I have heard those songs a month all day long and I'm still not tired of them. I'm just getting in a great mood thinking of the movie and its soundtrack!

The Lighthouse (I) (2019)
9/10
Intriguing story with ambitious artistic level
1 January 2020
Screenplay 10/10 Robert Eggers just did a intriging movie in his second one. In about 90 minutes he told us about two men getting crazy in a lighthouse. But in the end the viewer doesn't know what is real and what's not. I discussed three hours in a row with my friends about how to interpret the story of the movie. Brilliant!

Direction 9/10 Just like ,,The Witch'' ,,The Lighthouse'' is a very atmospheric movie which is very well paced and keeps the adrenaline up very high throughout the whole movie. The black-and-white and the small ratio which is nearly square are keeping up the artistic level of the work. In the end it is maybe a bit too artistic for somebody.

Acting 9/10 The movie contains three actors. One of those is simply just screaming but Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe absolutely delivered a massive performance. Pattinson is a professional actor, which can be huge one day, and not the charming ,,Twilight'' vampire anymore.

Soundtrack 8/10 The soundtrack is about confusing horror sounds which are driving you crazy just like the two lighthouse caretakers. It can get a little bit annoying if you aren't completely under the spell of the movie. There is only one real song in the movie which is also well chosen.
