Villain (1971)
Almost up there with Get Carter, but very different
I absolutely loved this. There was enough promise in the reviews and I'd never got round to watching it. Burton is dripping evil in this as I've never seen him before. His face clenched and body language ready to kill - he is an absolutely nasty piece of work. One of the other reviewers nailed it, in that there is obvious good or bad morals here, just a bunch of different lives on display. Highly recommend it to anyone who loves gritty 70s British drama. I mention Get Carter as that's the gangster yard stick. Get Carter is more entertaining, but it's nothing like as nasty as Villain. I see where Gangster Number One and Sexy Beast draw a lot of influence.
Russia 1985-1999: TraumaZone (2022)
I thought I understood the fall of the USSR...
.... But after watching this, I realise I knew virtually nothing.
I was born in 1971 in the UK. I studied modern history. I lived through the of the Cold War and vividly remember the Berlin Wall coming down. I remember the attempted coup in Russia. I remember the joy at the Cold War ending and Russia emerging from communism
Watching this, I now realise all I had was a hideously narrow view of things. You can't help but feel utter sorrow for the Russian people as the world collapsed around them and the wealth of the country was stolen. It's heartbreaking
This is a horror film. It was aptly named.
Interceptor (2022)
Not a single redeeming feature
I quite like B-Movies. They can be fun. They give new directors a chance. But this was simply awful. Story a poor Cold War era cliche, acting pure ham. Avoid. A missed opportunity.
Crime (2021)
Sensational - classic Welsh. More please
If you're a proper fan of Welsh you will love this - it's all about Ray, his character and his inner torment, as Welsh focusses on in his books. Brilliant dark humour reflecting the reality of our grim Scottish country. I was a bit wary of some of the actors at the start, but all of them ended up fitting very well, leading to an ending with a twist
Dougray Scott's finest role by far and I hope to see Welsh do more TV.
