Hostel: Part II (2007)
Excellent
My admiration goes out to the cast and crew. Hostel: Part II is the perfect companion piece to the original. We know what happens in Slovakia, and now we get to see how the victims are chosen and prepared for the customers. To say that it's the same movie completely misses the point. To show the girls going through something drastically different than the boys would compromise the integrity of the first film. Part II adds so much to the complete story...expanding the scope of the operation (who know that practically the whole town was in on it), showing the improvements at the factory (considering what happened at the end of Part I) and exploring the life and motivations of people that would bid for the chance to torture and kill another person. The scariest part of this film is that Richard Burgi and Roger Bart (Todd & Stuart) don't play their parts as psychos...they are just presumably wealthy guys going after the next thrill of a lifetime. No mythical demons, the undead or atomic mutants...the bad people are in fact ordinary people.
Hysterical (1982)
You're doomed if you watch this movie!
I remembered this movie from my youth, so when I saw that it was on Showtime last night, I had to stay up and watch it. Big mistake! This was perhaps the worst movie ever made. But it's more than that...I am terribly ashamed of myself for liking this movie as a child. In fact, it makes me think of a quote by Bill McNeal "When I was a child I thought as a child and spoke as a child, but when I became a man I took that child out back and had him shot." I wish I had done that before my inner child made me sit through Hysterical.
The State (1993)
Better than the Vacant Lot, worse than all the others
MTV has always been hit and miss with their programming...hell, they've missed with most all of them. The State is no exception. They suffered from what Saturday Night Live goes through every so often (too many people, not enough talent). And now their alumni have moved on to movies. Did the Tom Green disaster of Freddie Got Fingered have no impact on Hollywood? On a final note, I had high hopes that once MTV got rid of "The State" that they might go back to playing music videos. No such luck.
Cast Away (2000)
Average
Adequate acting and direction, but the screenplay falls flat once Hanks gets off the island. Many similiar comments have been made before (should have dealt with the isolation...), but the ending...S***! It plays more like a bad episode of Gilligans Island.
