Mea Culpa (2024)
4/10
Mea Culpa indicates Tyler Perry needs to realize his limitations.
2 March 2024
Mea Culpa has all the elements here of a really intriguing drama of crime, deceit, seduction, and suspense. All these components should have added up to an interesting cinematic experience, alas, they did not. Mea Culpa? Yes Tyler, this incoherent mess of a movie is your fault. Capable actors have to navigate this silly and predictable plot in a badly paced, unsatisfying, movie. Tyler takes credit., or should I say blame, for writing, directing, and producing this project. Perhaps delegating these tasks to more capable people would have been the wiser move, at least artistically. Then again, you can't argue with Tyler's success. I just don't care for the results.

The Blacklist: Misère (2021)
Season 8, Episode 14

Liz is back! Who cares?
24 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Elizabeth's absence, and now her return, demonstrates just how irrelevant her presence has become. In this weak and contrived episode we lose any compassion or sympathy you might have had for her character. She clearly becomes responsible for several people, some baddies, as well as innocents, losing their lives. She has become Red, just less interesting. Where's the balance in the story now?

The Blacklist: Rakitin (No. 28) (2021)

Elizabeth who?
4 April 2021
Excellent episode, showing MR. Spader at his masterful best. Unfortunately it also clearly demonstrated how much Elizabeth's character, as well as her unresolved issues are of little dramatic interest to this story. Much like the unanswered questions about Mulder's past on the X files that just dragged on way too long and well beyond the point of dramatic interest or impact. I have no idea what the showrunnrers have planned for Liz or what startling reveal they may share with us. The problem is, at this point,I don't care anymore.

Meandering story with underdeveloped characters. It insults its audience.
1 December 2020
This show has always seemed amateurish and campy to me.It was campy fun at first now it's just an insulting waste of time. Perhaps with Tyler Perry's power and wealth he could hire some professional writers and directors for his shows instead of doing everything himself Just a suggestion for the future coupled with appreciation to some of the fine actors that I wished had better material to work with,

Not for everyone, but I love it.

Fascinating, character driven story that unfolds at it's own unconventional pace. Interesting story, with it's dark humor, is extremely well acted and atmospheric. It reminded me somewhat of David Lynch's work but director Steven Conrad has his own unique voice. A fun ride.

The Orville (2017–2022)
4/10
The Orville serves us neither fish nor foul, and fails at both attempts.
23 September 2018
The Science Fiction that this show embraces feels stale and recycled. We have all seen variations on these stories executed with much more skill and suspense. In addition, the attempts at humor are lame and mostly fall flat. Other than an engaging cast and Seth's ever luminous smile, the Orville never really takes flight.

Lucifer (2016–2021)
Waste of talent and a great premise.
1 June 2018
I have watched every episode of Lucifer and enjoyed them. I even thought that the Ella Lopez character was a delightful addition to the cast. The problem I began to have was watching these trans-dimensional characters, who existed before human history began, get involved in a mundane world and a below average police procedural drama.I wanted more celestial drama and many times didn't feel the show had forward momentum. Look at Gaiman's other TV property "American Gods" to see a hint of the potentiality that can be tapped when you deal with the metaphysical world as a backdrop. Still, I enjoy the show and was sad to see it go.

Iron Fist (2017–2018)
3/10
Mildly entertaining with a good cast, yet well below the standard set by Daredevil. Luke Cage, and Jessica Jones.
11 August 2017
This show had a very good cast. It was sabotaged by a meandering story with some really bad dialogue. My wife rightly pointed out that it was not an accident that this entry in the Netflix Marvel universe was released after Jessica Jones, Daredevil, and Luke Cage, projects that were clearly superior. I had no knowledge of the source material but had heightened expectations because of the three aforementioned Marvel Netflix presentations. I will not be joining the Iron Fist when he returns to continue his quest in season two. I will however be watching him as one of the Defenders and I wish the franchise well.

Doctor Who (2005–2022)
comments on doctor's return
5 June 2005
I just saw the new Doctor (2005) on DVD and loved it. (Please note I have an "all region" DVD player, it's not available in region 1(USA) format yet.)It was fresh, inventive, yet very much in touch with the history and feel of the "Who" saga. Eccleston and Piper as the Doctor and Rose were inspired casting. I have seen all the doctors from Hartnell through McGann and this was a real treat. I think the one hour self-contained episodes are a great idea and help the pacing of the stories. I think this version would play well with American audiences, especially if it was introduced in a venue like the Sci-Fi channel.I saw most of the original version on public television, unfortunately, they are not as adventurous anymore.

School's Out! (1992 TV Movie)
Degrassi is still keeping it real.
15 January 2001
What distinguished the Degrassi series through all its various incarnations was the fact that it dealt with the problems of growing up in a honest and straightforward manner, School's Out is no exception.Although it might be comforting to people who have followed the series from the beginning to think that these young people live happily ever after, that wouldn't be true to intent of the original series or, true to life. This drama shows actions and there consequences as these young people accept(or choose not to accept) the responsibilities of adulthood. The result is a complex, disturbing, yet ultimately hopeful final(?) chapter to the wonderful Degrassi saga.

Walkabout (1971)

A poetically beautiful coming of age film told against the lush background of the Australian Outback.
9 December 2000
Three children( two white, one aboriginal) learn about survival, friendship, courage, and the true meaning of freedom as they traverse the beautifully primitive Australian wilderness. The movie features a superb young cast. The score, provided by John Barry, has the same "open space" majesty as his scores for Born Free and Midnight Cowboy. This is a haunting gem of a movie.

I will convey the settings.themes, and my reaction to the play
3 December 2000
A rich, textured drama that deals with three generations of a black family in the modern south. The grandmother and matriarch of the family is haunted by memories of her past(quite effectively recounted in flashbacks). Her son is a husband,as well as father to two teenage sons of his own. We follow his struggles to support his family and maintain his dignity in an environment that is sometimes hostile and racist. His teenage boys struggle to grow up and find their own identities. These stories are told powerfully and effectively with a wonderful cast.
