BachelorMan (2003)
Pretty Funny!
I saw this at the Schweitzer Lakedance Film Festival in Sandpoint in 2006 and it was very funny. The whole crowd (it was on a Friday Night) laughed and enjoyed it. The Bachelorman is a light crazy sometimes-hip sex comedy that is often over-the-top and sometimes predictable... but so what? Its fun to watch, and thats all that counts.
As for someone who could possibly give this film, or ANY film a one star out of ten? I mean take a step back for a second. I've seen some TERRIBLE films, but I've never seen a 1 star film. Generally, the worse it gets the more you can appreciate the camp value.
I just heard this got picked up for distribution and I'm really happy. People who want some simple fun adult comedy should pick this up!
Stealing Sinatra (2003)
Actually Enjoyable
Just saw this and it's not as bad as others make it out to be.
Yes, Arquette is a minor weak link but otherwise this film has a lot of good things going for it - and frankly I think how the kidnappers is portrayed adds to the realism of the film - I mean you have to be either dumb or crazy to try something like this - or both.
Ebert and Roeper gave it two thumbs up and I can see why - it was refreshing to see a story like this told from a lighter angle rather than the melodramatic stance it usually is.
Undoubtedly those who didn't "get" the Arquette character missed the flaws in personality which Arquette did portray well... the guy has a screw loose and is as Macy says, "in waaaaay over his head".
As far as the directing being a little clunky, I do have to agree, although perhaps its suits this somewhat unconventional storyline. All in all, It was enjoyable until the end, nevertheless it gets 7 stars because it was a little rough around the edges.
The Trouble with Dee Dee (2005)
Polarizing but Positive Fun!
I caught this at the Idaho Panhandle International Film Festival Wednesday, and it was very enjoyable. What is said in another review to be cliché for the ending is absolutely wrong, in my opinion, the ending is very poignient, and overall the film is just good fun. Many of the ladies I was with found it fun, although because Walter's character Dee Dee is so well played, two of our group were really turned off by Dee Dee because they were personally somewhat like the character. Interesting. Sunday this film wasn't selected for Best of Fest, and I complained! Sounds like I wasn't the only one who did because they are going to play it in Spokane for Best of Fest! Anyway see this film if you can, its a good old fashioned fun comedy with some heart.
Two for the Seesaw (1962)
Surprisingly Great.
I call this film surprisingly great not because I was shocked that Mitchum or MacLane delivered fine performances, it's surprisingly good because of everything else this film has... in addition to M&M's delicious performances. I had no idea what to expect before watching this, just the way I like it. Because then I get the 5-10 minute rule to takeover -- either I'm hooked or I'm not.
Well it started right away. This thing was shot in B&W anamorphic, and shot beautifully. The opening shots drew me in for their wide angles and good framing and nice dramatic lighting(ie what normal people call a good mood setter)... noirish in some respects. And then it sucked me right in.
Maybe because it started on the stage and the scenes were so long but the dialogue was so well crafted that you just had to pay attention.
Maybe the fantastic real life portrayals by M&M - not straying nor betraying.
But I found myself constantly wanting to talk some sense into Jerry and Gittel -- ah thats what cinema is -- the desire to find out how it ends. And what an ending it is... I'll leave it at that.
I give it a 10 because it maybe is among the very best of this category - the "realistic character dialogue romance featuring two very odd strangers (think Stewart and Novak in Vertigo)". Shot well, acted well... kept me glued to the end. I give it 10 and not 9 because well, without spoiling it -- they didn't go where they could have gone. And I think that most audiences won't understand that final point once they see it. Thats a shame. But those who understand will agree - brilliance all around.
10 from me. And thats saying a HELLUVA lot.
