Dangerous Davies: The Last Detective (1981)
A real gem.
Yet another of those gentle British comedy/dramas that they churn out without any effort. No strained humour or laugh tracks. Bernard Cribbins seems to have played the same sort of character throughout his career, and here He does it to a tee. The title character is supposed to be a younger man and Cribbins must have been over 50 when He did this, but it doesn't show. Bill Maynard supplies the foil for Cribbins one liners, and the rest of the supporting cast are strong too. The scene with the randy drunken woman in the elevator is hilarious. I wish I could get a copy of it. The book by Leslie Thomas is a good read too. Thomas worked on the script and it runs flawlessly.
Gothika (2003)
Exciting but full of holes
Halle Berry gave this movie everything she had. The pace of the action was fast and furious, but at the end I still didnt know who killed the husband? Having said that, the last little twist right at the end was a nice touch. Good psychological thriller.
Butterflies (1978)
Very funny, low key comedy
This is one of the most subtle comedies to come out of the UK. Not as brash or slapstick as a lot of others. Lots of character development, especially the lead, Ria, played by Wendy Craig. Every middle aged woman I know that has seen Butterflies relates to the frustrations that Wendy portrays so well, not just the stale marriage and longing for romantic adventure, but also the idea of being a stay-at-home "kept woman". The extra kicker is that she isn't even a good housewife. Lousy cook etc. Luckily, her long suffering husband has learned to cope with her, keeping his head down, and advising his sons to "act normally" as they listen to Ria's frustrations pour out. The whole supporting cast was so well chosen, from Ria's erstwhile lover to the house cleaner who takes the sons girly books home for her husband to read. Brilliant writing and direction. Not to be missed by anyone over 40.
