São Jerônimo (1999)
small anecdote
After watching this movie, being one of the only ones in it to stay through the entire thing in the Brasília Film Festival, I went to the director and asked what was the point of the movie. He said he wasnt the director the director of photography was. Neither of them felt like talking to me. So I went to the main actor who was a pretty cool guy, but he couldnt tell me the point either. In the end, the movie had no point, just some guy walking through the desert, but the photography was pretty beautiful. But only pretty pictures dont make a film.
Filme de amor (2003)
art chic wannabe...
No plot. No story. One theme. Just three people in an abandoned building talking about what makes them horny. This movie would actually be interesting if it didnt try so hard to be artistic. You cant try to make art you just do. Instead, you end being pretentious. Which is a word I use for alot of the movies released in 2003's Brasília Film Festival like this one. This movie tries so hard to be shocking and meaningful that it just ends up being funny. To give you an idea, one of the conversations in this movie (which is pretty much the only thing in the movie) feature the main actress saying she wants to be strangled by rhinoceres leather, she pauses and then screams. The only good thing I can say about this movie is that the cinematography is absolutely beautiful and the only thing worthwile in long long art cult wannabe.
Lost Zweig (2002)
bah bah bah boringgg
I dont think anyone but the director is gonna come and look at this page. So, I apologize Mr.Black but this movie wasnt very good filmmaking. The story is interesting but you cant just rely on dialogue and rhetoric to carry it. You need drama and action. And also the english accents in this movie are so ridiculous you cant take the movie seriously. Why do the Brazilian characters talk to themselves in english? And how come EVERY one knows english, from the maid to the prostitute, and the main characters cant bother themselves to learn portuguese? And if theyre german, why do they constantly speak english to themselves? Boring and a little bit pretentious, but you had good intentions so I cant blame you.
Ishtar (1987)
I LOVE this movie
I didnt know crap about this movie when I started watching it on cable tv, I thought I was gonna see All The President's Men... But from the moment it started I was captivated. This movie is SO good. The humor is so intelligent and self deprecating. Warren Beatty and Dustin Hoffman as the worst songwriting duo in history is one of the funniest things I have ever seen on screen. The only reason im writing anything is because im shocked that so many people hate this movie. Truthfully, I just think this movie was just so ahead of it's time in irreverence and comical situations that the people just didnt get it at the time of it's release.
Waiting for Harvey: A Beginner's Guide to Cannes (1999)
frickin funny
I can't believe no one has voted for this. I saw this on the eurochannel recently about four movies and theyre creators trying to make it big at Cannes. It's frickin hillarious. One of the funniest documentaries i've seen with that great british humour. I'm too lazy to talk more about it, just look it up.
Femme Fatale (2002)
A weird twist doesnt make a good movie
Spoilers maybe. Ok, I hate it when people think a movie's amazing just because it has a shocking "twist" that makes no sense. It's like near the end of the script the screenwriter suddenly realized that what he just wrote is meaningless trash, and decides to take into a completely direction because he has no idea what he was trying to say with this movie. This movie has no point, no theme, no anything. If this movement wasnt so damn long and slow Id forgive that, at least it would be entertaining.
Crazy/Beautiful (2001)
What teen movies should be...
For a long while now Ive been bombarded with teen movies that are crap. Written by people who forgot what it was like, less mature than teenagers themselves. Ive been waiting for a movie that was took itself seriously without being pretentious. That was mature and REAL. This is such a find. This movie is consistently good. Dialogue, Music, Acting, especially the cinematography and directing which just made the movie. It doesnt struggle to be hip or witty, theres no B.S.
The story isn`t complicated but it works. It`s just about the love between two people, how it affects the both of them and the journey which Kirsten Dunst`s character goes through. If your tired of the mindless repetitive teen crap, see this movie and appreciate it.
