Vizontele (2001)
A theater play would be better
Though much better than must of Turkish films that make a huge box-office, Vizontele seems to forget that this is a "movie", not a play (due to its cast and crew of theater origin). The whole film is made up of little sketches (usually aiming to make the audience laugh, for no cost)and there are too many characters, some of which have are of no use but making people laugh, which are sometimes distracting from the overall story.
But it masterfully accomplishes what it really is tying to achieve: drawing many audiences (even the ones who never go to the movies) to the movie, amusing them and showing the Turkish cinema is not hopeless. It's true: EVERYONE loved this movie and despite its flaws, it's still a good example of Turkish movies.
Filler ve Çimen (2000)
Remarkable
From the very beginning to the end, this movie maintains a rhythm that never falls short. The story is familiar to those living in Turkey, and it's masterfully balanced with a character drama, though unable to elaborate on neither because of too many characters and story details. But it's a rare success for the Turkish cinema, whose films so far were usually made to "amuse the crowd" or to emphasize the overlooked poor peasant life in the East. Filler ve Cimen also has an insight on many social and political issues; but what makes it a success is the uneasy way it tells the story (contrary to the common failure in Turkish films). The symbols are meaningful and offer a whole new perspective, but they were too very obvious to make sure they're understood. But anyway, it's a good movie, one of the best of the Turkish movies ever..
American Beauty (1999)
Great as you watch, greater when you look closer..
Even if you're not in the mood for watching a movie that has "depth" and would prefer an action movie instead; this one would do: go see it!! But if you want -need- a great movie that we don't see much often, then see it, then see it again and get it's DVD or something! I remember watching the "asparagus" scene over and over again, for it's one of the greatest scenes ever: brilliant dialogues, stunning acting! (basicly a summary of what the whole film is)
And it's an analysis of humans' nature in general rather than familys' in the US, or just both.
Se7en (1995)
Disturbing and stunning!!!
For the last 6 years since I've first watched Se7en -besides seeing it again and again- it has been and is still my favorite movie! It's dark, it's disturbing, it's nauseating; but these very characteristics of Se7en are what makes it superior to any movie with a good idea but unable to make it sound. Brilliant story -that you do not expect from a thriller-, and an atmosphere that makes it a masterpiece, thanx to Mr. Fincher! The library scene with the parallel editing and "Air" is just another masterpiece alone (as well as the beginning credits sequence).
You may be amazed at the disturbing intensity, or may loathe it; but will not be indifferent..
Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964)
A Masterpiece!
It's great, funny, brilliant and touching because it's very true indeed; what politics is all about.. Peter Sellers is more than amazing, the US-Russian Presidents' phone conversation is a classic (or must be) You do not need to love Kubrick to love this movie!
