Dear Wendy (2005)
Good tragedy
As a "gun loving pacifist" myself, I was very eager to watch this movie.
The narrative structure of this movie is great. The first scene let you just have a glimpse of the tings to come, the end. After that, no matter how happy, fun, good things happened you knew tragedy would fall at any moment. The only question you can ask is when and how things will go bad. And the wait is enjoyable! in a stressful, ulcer-inducing way because of that fate.
Given that, it is kind of a shame how that ill-fate actually happens.
They could have use intelligent, or at least not idiot cops. They could investigate hoy real police men could react in such a situation. Instead, we have moronic cops, reacting stupidly to the situation (when not staring to the horizon)... neither of that "improvements" would have damaged the story.
Regarding the "message" of the movie, I would rather think of it as a warning against sects and fanaticism in general.
As I said, I think it is a very good movie that could easily have been great.
Oldeuboi (2003)
Great, violent comic-like movie.
Funny. This movie has been rated a respectable 8.3 (as January 30, 2006) yet all comments are bad! The problem seems to be that some people can't recognize a comic when the hero does not wear a costume.
Sure, the story is darker than your every day Marvel classic. The final twist quite painful for some of us. And the Hero's morality is more than doubtful.
But some scenes I can't get out of my mind. And the travel thru the darkest passages of hate and revenge is really intense. You have some laughs too. And some good old days punch fighting.
A great movie!
Red Eye (2005)
Another great plot spoiled by a weak ending
I knew it before I saw it. It was impossible for this movie to be as good as its own trailer! Because I must say this movie has one of the finest trailers ever made.
Half into the movie it was still great. But then, a lot of Hollywood clichés and "political correctness" spoiled it all. Why a normal, shy girl must be able wound badly an experimented, professional killer using a ball-pen, then run away from a plane, evading all the airport security (after 9-11!!!!)? The "right" end would have been the "wrong" one. With the bad guys getting at least half their plan done. It was a lot of fun, anyway.
Shallow Hal (2001)
A scene to remember.
While you really laugh a lot watching this movie, something deeper seems to be going on. The fact is that after seeing it, I felt very touched. You know, like in "It moved me". Either something is very wrong inside my brain or this is a really good comedy that somehow, in between the absurd plot, reflects many things that we, Men in the early 30´s, feel and think.
Oh, about the scene... It is the one where the girl invites Mauricio to a concert where Paul McCartney will play The Beatle´s songs along with Ringo, Sting and Eric Clapton in a almost-private concert. If only for this, go and watch it.
Tokyo Cowboy (1994)
Nice little movie
Ok. You do not expect much from a 1994 movie you have never heard of and is being given for free with the purchase of a bad magazine. Least while for strange developments in your life all of this happens to take place in Bilbao, Spain.
But this is a fine movie. A very good one. The plot flows very ...well... very fluidly. It goes surprising you on and on, but in a subtle, soft way.
At the end, you feel a lot of empathy for the naive Japanese guy, and, in my case, a deep love for Shelly... I can´t tell you more about it without spoiling it.
Watch it.
Le pacte des loups (2001)
A bad movie made of good scenes.
It is longer than you´d wish. The fights are absolutely unjustified. Its hard to follow...
Do not waste your time unless you really need to watch cool FX while people speak French.
Space Cowboys (2000)
Eastwood's clichés at maximum level.
As a big fan of Clint-Eastwood-as-a-director films, it was disappointing to see Space Cowboys.
The plot is weak, the russian general seems to be as stupid as in any middle of the cold war holywood movie. Worst: American Military ain´t very smart either.
While I can enjoy watching an old guy dating with a young girl, watching four of them doing so, while also training to pass the physical test of an astronaut and surpassing all of NASA´s young promises was almost unbearable.
You can have a good time watching it. It just is not a good movie.
Le Cinquième Élément (1997)
Stunning visuals and plenty of humor
This film features one of the best mixes of action, fantasy and humor I have seen in a movie.
Gary Oldman, as always, is the bad guy. Milla Jovovich does her job well beyond her incredible beauty, and even Bruce Willis seems to be the perfect hero.
Is it me, or there is a lot of Star Wars allusions?
A must see. And a good candidate for my private collection.
