I Am Number Four (2011)
Two Jews On Film Go In Different Directions With This SciFi Epic
'I Am Number Four' directed by D. J. Caruso (Disturbia) is a scifi/action/teen-love story based on the best selling novel of the same name.
Alex Pettyfer portrays John Smith (Number Four). John is your basic teenage alien from the planet, Lorien. He's being hunted by the super evil Mogadorians. The villanious Mogadorians are eliminating the nine Loriens that are hiding on earth in numerical order.
When the film opens, Lorien Number Three, who's been living in Florida, has just been killed. Realizing that he's next, John and his teacher/protector, Henri (Timothy Olyphant) exchange their identities for new ones, flee Florida and settle in the small town of Paradise Ohio.
So what's an 'alien on the run' to do?...Enter high school of course. This doesn't sit too well with Henri. Henri wants John to keep a low profile while he's waiting for his powers to develop to their full potential. John promises Henri that he'll stay off the radar.
Well, that's hard to do when your hands glow like lightbulbs and you can toss around football players and police cars as if they were made of feathers. It also doesn't help. when you fall for a hot chick named Sarah (Dianna Agron) who the star quarterback(Jake Abel) thinks is his property. Things in Paradise get messy very quickly and that's where the fun begins.
'I Am Number Four' has romance, action, super bad aliens that look like bikers with piranha teeth and basically everything a teenager could want in a sci/fi movie. Of course, I am not a teenager and I absolutely loved this film. Gave it four bagels out of five. Gnomeo & Juliet (2011)
Two Jews On Gnomo & Juliet
Can two young teenagers find love despite their warring families? Well, we all know how Romeo and Juliet ended up. However in the 3D version of 'Gnomeo & Juliet' directed by Kelly Asbury, things don't turn out quite as tragic for our lovers.
'Gnomeo & Juliet' takes place in contemporary Stratford-on-Avon, Shakespeare's birthplace. Miss Montague (voice of Julie Walters) and Mr. Capulet (voice of Richard Wilson) are neighbors and they absolutely hate each other.
Their respective collection of garden gnomes, the Reds and the Blues view each other with hostility as well. After Blue Gnomeo's(voice of James McAvoy) lawnmower is wrecked in a race against the Reds, he conducts a raid through the fence into Red territory. It's here that Gnoemo meets the Red Gnome Juliet (Emily Blunt) and the two of them fall madly in love. What's a couple to do when they each come from a family that hates each other? That's where the fun comes in. To the music of Elton John, we follow these star crossed lovers as they try to find a place where they can live happily ever. Helping them along the way are all kinds of wonderful creatures... including Fawn (the voice of Ozzy Osbourne) a big ceramic frog (voice of Ashley Jensen) who goes by the name of Nanette and a large pink flamingo named Benny. (voice of Matt Lucas).
This is fractured Shakespeare and it's absolutely delightful. Michael Caine plays Juliet's father, Lord Redbrick and Maggie Smith plays Gnomeo's mum, Lady Bluberry. Even Patrick Stewart makes an appearance as Shakespeare himself and Hulk Hogan plays Terrafirmenator, a gigantic killer lawnmower. Two Jews On Film gave this movie five bagels out of five.
The Rite (2011)
The Rite
This film s a supernatural thriller inspired by true events. The film follows seminary student Michael Kovak (Colin O'Donoghue) who is sent to the Vatican to study exorcism. Michael is a man with many doubts...not only about demon possession but about his own calling. He challenges his superiors to look to psychiatry, rather than demons in treating the possessed.
When Michael arrives in Rome he is order to apprentice with the unorthodox Father Lucas (Anthony Hopkins) a legendary priest who has performed thousands of exorcisms. Michael is resistant, questioning Father Lucas at every turn. But when Michael gets drawn into a troubling case of possession that seems to transcend even Father Lucas's skill, he glimpses something that is so evil, so violent, so terrifying that it forces him to question everything he believes.
'The Rite' is directed by Mikael Hafstrom (1408) and also stars Alice Braga, Rutger Hauser (as Michael's father) and Toby Jones. Unfortunately it's not till the last forty five minutes that "The Rite' starts to heat up. The best thing about this film is Sir Anthony Hopkins...giving a performance that is both subtle and terrifying...reminiscent of his portrayal of the infamous Dr. Lechter (Silence of the Lambs). 'The Rite' opens in theaters Friday January 28, 2011. The 'Two Jews On Film' didn't feel the thrill with this one and for that reason, gave The Rite' a very low bagel score.
The Mechanic (2011)
Two Jews On The Mechanic
This film is directed by Simon West stars Jason Statham as Arthur Bishop, a 'mechanic' - an elite assassin with a strict code and an unique talent for cleanly eliminating targets. It's a job that requires professional perfection and total detachment and Bishop is the best in the business.
When he's tricked into killing his close friend and mentor Harry (Donald Sutherland) Bishop's world is very quickly turned upside down. Harry's son, Steve (Ben Foster) approaches Bishop and talks him into mentoring him...He wants Bishop to teach him everything he knows so he can become an assassin and avenge his father's death. He has no clue that Bishop is the man that killed Harry. Against his better judgment Bishop agrees and starts to teach Steve the tricks of the trade. Steve is everything Bishop is not...impulsive and sloppy. But the two men soon form a bond and we follow them as they track down and kill one man after another until they reach their ultimate goal...avenging Harry's death.
Tony Goldwyn plays Dean Sanderson, the head of the agency that employs Bishop. 'The Mechanic' is a remake of the 1970's film with the same name that starred Charles Bronson. This is a super violent film. The stunts are good, but it's a story that you've seen many many times before. You can see the twist coming a mile away. It's for that reason, 'The Two Jews On Film' awarded 'The Mechanic' a very low bagel score.
Opens in theaters, Friday January 28, 2011.
Barney's Version (2010)
Barney's Version
This was a beautiful, fascinating film about a very anti-social character Barney Panofsky. It starts out in Rome in the 1970's and spans a period of thirty years. The film is part murder mystery, love story, and lastly a memoir of a Jewish Canandian television producer, unlikable but never predictable. Paul Giametti gave an Oscar worthy performance as this complex character. He actually makes you care about Barney. Rosamind Pike, as Barney's third wife is wonderful, as is Minnie Driver as the overbearing, Jewish 2nd wife. Dustin Hoffman is Barney's dad and he captures the qualities of an earthy retired cup from the touch neighbors of Montreal. Scott Speedman does a wonderful job as Barney's drug addict best friend. 'Barney's Version' is based on the novel by Mordecai Richler. a very famous Jewish novelist. To see our full review please go to Two Jews On Film. We give this film a high bagel rating
